Posting another review for Dr. Patterson and the Franklin Dental office, since I moved out of the area, but wanted to leave my strongest personal review for this amazing dentist. My trust is not easily earned, but for this dentist I can't say enough good things and totally agree with many of these outstanding reviews. Dr. Patterson is a REALLY good dentist and you'll be in excellent hands if you see him. He deserves your trust since he takes great care in your wellbeing, will take a conservative approach if you like or proactive approach when necessary, and stands by his work! Over the past 7 years, I've had multiple fillings that needed to be replaced and each time Dr. Patterson did a great job to make sure the visit was as smooth and painless as possible. He made sure the work met his high level of quality, once replacing a filling when it didn't meet his standards. Wow! He did an excellent job of following up and checking his work year after year. He prioritized the right fillings that needed to be done over the years very well so I could financially manage my treatment plan well without stress. In an expensive city like San Francisco, that factor matters too. : ) Again, his genuine care, expertise, knowledge, and dentistry talents are EXACTLY what you want in a dentist. What happens when you crack your tooth in half on a lobster shell on a holiday weekend and you're new in town with no referrals and no one returns your call for emergency services? Well this is where I had the pleasure of meeting on of the amazing healthcare professionals in my lifetime! And I use to be in the healthcare industry so I've encountered plenty of doctors. Dr.P called me back right away, assessed my situation and then worked on a complex plan to save my tooth. The damage was very extensive and the pain was horrible but he was kind, patience, extremely knowledgeable and confident in both his recommendations and outcome. He has a great bedside manner and is wicked smart. I am so happy and lucky that I met a doctor that handled my complex case so well it looked effortless! I was a little nervous going in to see Dr. Patterson as it was my first time seeing a dentist in two and a half years, but the good doctor took care of me. He met me at the door, told me a joke, and we were on our way. Cindy, the hygienist, was nice as can be and Dr. P told me what he was doing every step of the way. I was going to dentists way before it was the hip thing to do, but they've never told me what it was they were doing, exactly. I decided to make an appointment with Dr. Patterson based on reviews and ratings that I found on Yelp and other medical websites. It was just for a 6-month visit/cleaning so I figured that if I didn't have a good experience I could just find someone new 6 months later. Dr. Patterson turned out to be awesome! He's young and relatively new to the dentistry world but he is as professional, experienced, and skilled as any wonderful dentist I have ever been to. He spent a long time with me, chatting, getting to know me as a patient and a person. He addressed all my concerns and made my care feel truly personalized. Office COVID protocol is insufficient to protect patients and charges are sky high. Makes me wonder what other safety shortcuts were taken during the 35 years I was a patient here. No more! The care hasn't been the same after an older dentist retired. During the last SF COVID surge, a hygienist tested positive for COVID and exposed patients. The office never notified folks like me who were in the office that day and live with vulnerable unvaccinated people. I happen to hear from a friend who was also there that same day. They called and notified him, but not me. Woops, big mistake! When I called Patterson about it he took days to respond and never apologized. He didn't seem to care. He's less focused on patient safety than I thought, unfortunately. Plus they charge a premium for everything!! I suggest looking for better options. read more

As far as I can tell, Dr Patterson is the only dentist in San Francisco who doesn't try to upsell you treatment you don't need. This is based off of having been to 3 or so other dentists myself, and hearing stories from half a dozen friends. Dr.Patterson is very collaborative in how he handles treatment, explaining everything as he goes, and walking you through the pros and cons of any optional treatment. Highly recommend. read more

Dr. Patterson is a unicorn among dentists in SF. He is everything you want in a dentist-- meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail, good listener and communicator, calm and gentle, attentive to how you're doing during each procedure with follow-ups to check on you, and considerate of helping you make the right choices for your budget and insurance (i.e. no upselling). I was referred to Dr. Patterson by my periodontist during a dental crisis in which I lost crowns on my two back teeth and suffered bone, gum, and jaw problems. Even though my case was a mess, Dr. Patterson saw me immediately, and laid out a step by step process for recovery. Dr. Patterson had to make the crowns from scratch and took immense care in shaping and fitting them to ensure they fit perfectly. Throughout the process, he explained every step, showed images, and made sure I was comfortable with what was happening. He also worked with me and my insurance to make it as cost effective as possible. After 2 years of pain and believing I'd have to live with that, Dr. Patterson fixed everything, and now I am pain free! His support and front office teams are also top notch. This has been the least hassle I've ever had with my insurance; scheduling is a breeze; cleanings are painless; and they are just nice people. Dr. Patterson two important qualities I seek in a dentist- he is both caring and fastidious. I have had a crown replaced with him and several fillings. Each time he did high quality, detailed dental work, and was also empathetic and gentle. He even corrected issues that I've had from past dental work, he's that good! He spends extra time to explain the visit with photos and models so I understand exactly what's going on and what he recommends. I've actually learned a lot from him about anatomy because he cares and wants his patients to be informed. He personally calls me after I've had work done. Best teeth cleaning I ever had in my life. No joke! I have been getting cleanings with this numbing paste for the last 15(!) years. Dr. Patterson asked me to just TRY without and promised to be gentle. I felt nothing! He was SO GENTLE! I felt comfortable. He didn't push for any unessesary treatment and believes in no intervention in healthy teeth unless needed. He listen and answered all my questions patiently and was so nice and sweet. He's thorough with his work and super friendly and easy to chat with. I recently just got my very first adult cavity and was really bummed. Dr. Patterson made me comfortable from the beginning, he numbed the gum around the tooth and explained the process. My 90 year grandfather recently had an emergency and needed a dentist in a hurry. We were in Hawaii on vacation when he broke his front tooth biting into a piece of hard candy. We had a 2-day stopover in San Francisco before flying home to Chicago and Dr. Patterson was able to fit him in as the first appointment of the day even though it was last minute. He has a wonderful "chairside" manner and a calming voice which I really need because of my morbid fear of dentists.
