Dr. Whelan and his staff probably saved my life.
It was the weekend before Labor Day, and I started experiencing severe chest and back pain. By Monday it hadn't subsided, so because I was having trouble breathing I went to Candler Hospital's emergency room. They sent me away with a diagnosis of musculoskeletal strain.
I went to see Dr. Whelan the following day. He gave me a neck/rib adjustment and did a few other things but asked me to come in later in the week, as Hurticane Irma was on the way.
On Thursday the pain had worstened. I went in again and saw Dr. Erin. (Sp?) She was extremely concerned and took some X-rays (something the ER had failed to do). She sent me to urgent care with them, citing that she was afraid something might be wrong with my lungs.
I went to urgent care, then the ER at St. Joseph's, where I was diagnosed with bilateral pulmonary embolisms (blood clots in my lungs). Dr. Whelan called me this morning to check in and was shocked that the first ER trip hadn't investigated, as the condition can be life-threatening.
I am so grateful that Dr. Erin was so thorough. I am now sitting in the hospital on my way to recovery. The hurricane is still on its way, but if I'd waited until after the storm, who knows what might have happened.
This office is full of kind and genuine people who care about their patients. I obviously recommend them without hesitation. read more
