I came to SF Dental Wellness after years of TMJ symptoms that I now think likely developed from childhood orthodontics to correct an underbite. By the time I found this clinic on my doctor's referral, my jaw was clicking constantly, I had recurrent headaches, and I was experiencing what felt like jaw dislocation while eating. Miguel and the rest of the staff were incredibly helpful, kind, and thorough throughout the process. Dr Chui's non-invasive approach was exactly what I needed, and I'm thrilled to report that the frequency of my tension headaches has significantly decreased, which was my biggest concern. The included red light panel has also provided neck tension relief that chiropractors and masseuses could never solve, and clicking is far reduced. Before and after CT scans clearly showed how the orthotic opened more space in my jaw joint. That said, there are some things to know going in. First, this treatment is expensive and almost certainly not covered by insurance. Second, expect to be presented with additional procedures like turbinate reduction and be prepared to decline if they don't feel necessary to you. Third and most importantly: my bite changed after treatment, and I wasn't expecting this. The clinic offered bite reconstruction or suggested I see an orthodontist, but also warned me about the orthodontist route since the jaw shift is so specific and a traditional orthodontist might not understand it. I wish the clinic could partner with an orthodontist familiar with TMJ cases, or at least explain this possibility upfront. Finally, I would have appreciated more transparency at the beginning about treatment costs and which procedures would likely be recommended. Despite these frustrations, I'm genuinely grateful I did this treatment rather than waiting and risking surgical intervention. The improvement in my daily quality of life has been significant. I've been going to Dr. Chui for the past 6 months for my TMJD and neck pain/tension headache issues. He had an orthotic made for me and I wore it while coming in weekly for laser therapy and orthotic adjustments. While the process felt long and progress felt minimal every week, I'm now so glad I put that time in. Seeing my CT scan today compared to the first scan 6 months ago was so satisfying! There is now more space in my jaw joint, which means no grinding. I've also slowly but surely been feeling less neck pain and headaches. I now see my orthotic as a helpful tool to use whenever I'm feeling stressed / a headache coming on, and I plan to keep wearing it. Dr. Chui himself is very friendly and patient with explaining how the whole process works and why it works. His technicians and staff are also friendly. My only critique is sometimes the clinic gets really busy or is understaffed, so there were a few times where I waited for my appointment for ~30 minutes. Aside from being a leader in the field of sleep dentistry, TMJ, etc. he has an innate enthusiasm and curiousity that elevates his practice, and shows he loves his work. He conducts a thorough and personalized diagnosis (showed me multiple devices before recommending one) and delivers a precision solution for every one of his patients. He doesn't stop until things are truly right. After taking a number of measurements and photos of my mouth and posture, he used body kinesthetics to demonstrate how my lack of oxygen was not just affecting my sleep, but also limiting strength and movement in my neck and spine. He answered every question and took all of my speculations respectfully. Whereas most medical professionals are forced to move patients in and out quickly, Dr. Chui is patient, interested in communication and doesn't leave the appointment until he knows every thought has been answered. I was a patient of Dr. Mieger for over 15 years before she sold her practice to Dr. Chui. Dr. Mieger was the best dentist I had ever been to so I had high hopes that Dr. Chui could fill her shoes. He didn't even come close to filling the small toe area. Both my husband and I were patients there and received the worst dental care and some very unscrupulous billing practices while we there (up until 2019). He recommended a new style biteguard for me and the office manager gave me the pricing, which was barely covered by my insurance. Months later, they called to tell me that the pricing info that was given to me was incorrect and that the office manager was mistake (and no longer there), and that I had to pay an additional couple of hundred dollars. That along with having issues with the fillings he did, I decided he was not the dentist for me. Now fast forward almost 4 years and the reason I'm writing this review. I received a bill in the mail (mind you, this is the first bill I had received from them since 2019) for a balance due of over $900 dating back to the services from March and April of 2019!! WTF?? I called the billing department and they said that they had recently done an audit of their billing records and found they didn't charge me enough for their services back then. I'm sorry but WHAT??? I have Never heard of anything like this before. It's completely shady and you better believe that this review is being posted everywhere it needs to be posted as well as with the BBB. This dental office is morally such a bad place. I wish all the customers who had awful experiences and got unfairly mischarged could come together and get this unethical place shut down. They automatically made the appointment for me without my consent, ignored my multiple cancellation requests, and sent bills multiple times even after they agreed to cancel the bill by saying "booking the appointment without a customer's consent is due to their IT system issue." However, another bill was sent. Then they called and threatened me to take down the negative but honest Google review I left. They said they wouldn't cancel the bill if I didn't take down the bad Google review... How can a doctor's office that treats patients for a living can operate in such a heartless way? Please please stay away at all costs, so you don't receive the bills for the appointments you never made, and please report to the police if you have an unfair and unethical experience with this office. I went to Dr. Chui with TMJ and sleep apnea, conditions which were causing me difficulty in my life. My TMJ had flared up for many months, causing me headaches, and nothing I did helped it, including seeing another well-respected TMJ dentist. I was also concerned about my newly diagnosed sleep apnea, because that can cause health problems. Dr. Chui spent his first visit with me thoroughly going through my health and dental history, and he examined my jaw and reviewed the sleep test that diagnosed my sleep apnea. He recommended a treatment for each condition. He was very nice and approachable, and I immediately felt comfortable with him. After being treated by Dr. Chui for both conditions, my TMJ has greatly improved, and my headaches are gone. Now that I wear the orthotic he designed, I no longer have sleep apnea either. The latest sleep test I took a few weeks ago is now normal! I live down the Peninsula, and it was worth the drive to come to the city to be treated by him. He has a friendly staff, too. My experience at SF Dental Wellness surpassed expectations. I have extreme anxiety when it comes to dental work/ dental offices but the staff and doctors here made me feel completely at ease. Best dental experience I've ever had. The office location is amazing but plan ahead for parking. The office is very clean and the staff are super nice and efficient. After my cleaning was done Dr. Chui did a complete exam on me. He pointed out some problems that I've had for years and I didn't know because I thought "it's normal". Dr. Chui is also a dental sleep specialist. I was concerned that I might have sleep apnea so I spoke to him about it. He gave me a sleep test kit that I took home.
