Last Sunday was the most recent of several times over the years that I've had hibachi at Chopsticks, and like every time I go, I left satisfied and full (in the good way, not the "it's Thanksgiving and I overdosed on gravy" type of way). Admittedly, I'm not a fan of being seated with a group of strangers, and I'd rather just eat my dinner instead of being entertained by flying zucchini. However, the quality of the food more than makes up for the "cheese factor." A meal at Chopsticks begins with a serving of Japanese mushroom and onion soup. It's good, but nothing out of the ordinary. Next, you get a small bowl of salad with iceberg lettuce, carrots, and red cabbage topped with ginger salad dressing (in fact, the dressing is so good that it's one of my favorite things about this place). Now, I realize that some people might look down on a salad that mostly consists of iceberg lettuce. They might even sniff at being served such a salad. But iceberg lettuce happens to be my favorite, so I'm never disappointed. Before you've even put down your salad fork, you're served your choice of rice: fried with vegetables or steamed white. As you're eating this, your chef is cracking jokes and working his magic with vegetables and your entree. In rapid succession, you're served a shrimp appetizer, fried zucchini and onions, fried beansprouts, and your choice of meat or combination of meats (steak, chicken, scallops, lobster tails, and shrimp are some of the choices). If you can manage it after consuming all of this, your meal ends with a small dish of ice cream. I've never had a bad dinner here. Nothing is ever over-cooked or under-cooked, and although much of the food is fried, it never seems heavy or greasy. My brother, a first time hibachi diner and a picky eater (I should say very picky; I'm talking about a guy who wouldn't even try pizza until he was 20 years old - pizza, of all things!), cleaned his plate. My boyfriend, a naval officer who's eaten around the world, is very happy with this restaurant as well. I did not like this place! Oh my lord...a guy making a pyramid out of my onions does not make up for having an empty stomach after paying $14. This place was chosen for me by people who live in the area. I guess they'd liked the sushi there before. I got the vegetarian 'combo'. I got a watery-acidic carrot and lettuce salad...I was supposed to get an appetizer, but since they didn't have the vegetarian version, they omitted it altogether. Now to the true turd of this experience- the 'entree'. I know that I'm a vegetarian and I shouldn't necessarily be catered to because I have an unpopular lifestyle, but seriously, you suck a** if you can't pull off a halfway decent vegetarian dish. If you can't make vegetables taste good, then you're doing something wrong. I was given charred vegetables with no sauce and zero flavor. Asian restaurants usually have amazing veggie food, so there was no excuse for this. The hibachi guy flung stuff around and tried to make people catch shrimp in their mouths, but really, when I go to a restaurant I want to just eat. The only redeeming factor was the token scoop of maple ice cream at the end. Being hungry put me in a crappy mood the rest of the night. All in all, I could have found this meal in a dumpster and spared myself $14 before tax and tip. I have been to this place a couple times,but just with buddies..Took my girlfriend there last nite and she pointed out things I never would have noticed. We just got chinese food,so we sat at the last booth near the window.Then my GF pointed out all the filth...The curtains were filthy and there was dirt all along the floorboards.The glasses for the water were not clean,and the silverware had water spots.We watched as the waiters "cleaned" the table in the middle of the room..the brushed two grains of rice off the table and proceeded to put the place mats down. I can't imagine what the kitchen must have looked like. You would figure a place that has Chinese nationals working there to pay off their debt would train them to clean,but then again China probably has different standards of cleanliness than the USA..Besides,all the workers have to pile into the white van at 8:30 to be taken to most likely some triple decker in Lowell where 50 of them live until their debt is paid off to the coyotes that smuggled them here. Not a bad place. The food was good and it's a buffet. Waitress came up almost immediately after being seated which was great. After that got my food, sat down, and there she was with the drinks. My food seemed fresh since sometimes some buffets leave the food out too long and it becomes overcooked/stale. Afterwards my waitress gave me zero fuss when it was time to split the check. Drinks, food and then dancing. You can get all of this on the right side of the restaurant in the bar/lounge area. They have live music and the bands are very very good!! The drinks are umm...potent for sure! Watch out for those mai tais! Yummmmmy. The food is very good, lots of it and omg the teriyaki beef!! To die for! Absolutely scrumptious crab rangoon!! Floors are filthy, seats are dirty and ripped, the space between the grill and the table (about a half inch gap) was filled with dirty old food that hadn't been cleaned in ages and if you looked above a few of the tables there was grease ready to drip down onto food from the vent hoods. So gross! That should be wipped down regularly. Clearly its not. Don't get me started on the lack of cleanliness of the bathroom. The stainless steel stalls and walls looked like they had been washed down the floor mop water. It truly made me wonder if the lack of care to the facility was reflected in their kitchen. Placed a takeout order for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. Both the Peking ravioli and chicken Lo Mein did not taste good at all, we ended up just throwing it all away. The chicken fingers and egg rolls were literally dripping with grease, tossed those too. The crab Rangoon were ok, the standard kind you get pretty much everywhere. I also ordered the beef and shrimp from the teppanyaki menu. For $20+ it is supposed to be steak and shrimp in a teriyaki sauce, an order of shrimp appetizers, soup, grilled vegetables, salad, and desert. The steak and shrimp were cooked correctly and were pretty good but lacking flavor, the soup was a so, so onion broth, the salad was fine, but no shrimp appetizer, no grilled vegetables, and no desert. Discovered this only after we got settled in to eat. This was the first, and last time we will be ordering from this restaurant. Not a good first impression. read more

The people who work there are friendly and actually make you feel like your business is appreciated. - Chopsticks has a Chinese buffet and Singapore does not. We don't usually order the buffet anyway, but if that's your thing, then Chopsticks is your place. - Chopsticks has Japanese options, and Singapore does not. Their sushi is actually quite good, and the hibachi is a good time, if not the most exciting menu ever. - The bar at Chopsticks is much less overwhelming than the one at Singapore. Singapore can be kind of scary. Haha - I like the Mai tais, crab rangoons and Peking ravioli slightly better at Singapore. read more

This was my first Japanese / Hibachi experience and I was pleasantly surprised. I especially liked the spicy vegetables, which was a revelation since I'm not a natural lover of veges! The chef prepared our meal right at our table, putting on quite a show and creating a flaming onion volcano! $20-$30 will get you an entree, soup, salad, a dish of ice cream for dessert and that's on top of the "Iron Chef" style entertainment. Although Chopsticks has been a staple of Central Mass dining for us, we have grown increasingly disappointed with the service as of late. Some of the waitstaff here are simply clueless and have no idea as to how people should be treated. The food is much better than the service. Anyone with a fondness for buffets can do much worse than the Chopsticks. There is a good variety of dishes to choose from and soft-serve is definitely an added bonus. My family of 4 was heading to Great Wolf Lodge for the weekend and it was late in the evening and the kids were hungry. Drive around a large shopping area and couldn't decide what to eat. Drove past the typical chain restaurants and fast food places, but off the corner of my eyes, saw a huge sign for hibachi, and my oldest loves hibachi so we decided to give it a shot. I tried plenty of other hibachi places, so what can be so bad. Walked in and said we had 4 people for hibachi. Was told to walk down the hall and check in. Apparently they have the whole restaurant sectioned off for hibachi, buffet, sushi, and Chinese fares? Anyways, the host was no where to be found at the check in station and we waited for about 10 minutes before someone showed up. The place seemed dirty and run down. The equipment was clean so thumbs up, but the floors were dirty and the chairs was beat up. Been to enough hibachi places and this is by far the worst looking one. Anyways we were seated next to a couple. This is typical for a hibachi place to find enough small party so it adds up to about 8-10 party before you are served or can place order. Then another party of 3 was seated to the other side of us. They knew the couple to the other side of us and constantly talked back and forth which made things quite uncomfortable while dining. Eh, whatever I can deal with it. Ordered and soon enough the hibachi chef showed up. When you go out for hibachi you expect at lest a half decent show. Hence why I don't mind paying a lil extra for half decent food. We'll the show was pretty much non existence. A couple of twist of the spat and knife and couple of veggie tossing and the volcano onion. So typical. That was pretty much it. No entertainment value what so ever. No conversing with the customers. At least the food was half decent. Or maybe I was just hungry. The sauces you typically get; spicy mustard and ginger sauce was bland and flavorless. The salad dressing was salty and bland, and the soup was disgusting. Full of MSG or just way too much salt. Starting to catch on? The only good thing is service and the ice cream that came with the meal, albeit the ice cream was store bought quality. Went here the other day for Hibachi which is such a cool concept but EVERY single time I've ever gone to this place I end up leaving feeling so sick. I don't know what it is, I don't know if it's the oil, the fact they cook raw meet and the my other food all together, I don't know but my stomach always turns. The show is great but the food is eh. Chopsticks also has a buffet which again is okay. There bar and drinks are typical and it typically gets busy on the weekend. I have nothing negative to say about this place. We come here when we're in the area, typically for lunch and mai tai's. The bar area is a little dark, but the bartender is always nice. You can tell it's mostly occupied with locals who love their chinese drinks! The mai tai's are really good. I tried the sweet & sour soup, and it was hot and fresh. My boyfriend got the vegetarian delight. The veggies were fresh, and the accompanying sauce was delicious. It doesn't come with rice, but the portion is huge, so you don't really need it. The menu has something for everyone, including sushi & a buffet. It's not the prettiest of places to dine in, but worth a try for traditional chinese fare and drinks. read more

Good food, And nice owners, but the last few times we ordered take out, our order was wrong...I order sushi take out sometimes and I really look forward to having certain maki rolls I'm craving. When I got it home, twice in a row, they sent me home with the wrong maki rolls and sometimes you can't check until you open and eat it what is inside the roll! Ordered a caterpillar roll twice and both times I got Philadelphia rolls which are completely different!! Also another time we ordered a pu pu platter and they forgot the crab rangoons which are the best part!! Came one night for live music and the bartender ignored me for about 15 minutes and wasn't serving anyone else. The waitress was on top of filling water glasses and clearing the table very attentive. Excellent showmanship by the chef preparing and grilling the meal and making it a fun experience. The onion soup and salad were very good.The rice was outstanding.The vegetables were well seasoned and prepared. The Calamari was excellent in its seasoning and the tenderness. Thursday and Sunday nights are buffet night and the food is much better quality than the food you'll find at most buffets, with a bit less variety though. We ate here on Christmas Eve last year and both got sick from the Chinese Buffet. Last night against our better judgement we tagged along with some friends who love the Hibachi here. Horrible idea. The food was burnt, bland, and overpriced. We were charged extra for Hibachi rice which was gross. The scallops were the size of nickels, paper thin, and were burnt. For some reason the shrimp were all diced up into tiny pieces?? The guy next to us got calamari that "danced" on the grill from the shock of going from frozen to nuclear hot so quickly. I thought maybe it was just our chef so I made it a point to look around at the other tables. Same thing at every table. Anyone with eyes and a nose could tell they were burning the food. Not to mention Hibachi chefs are usually entertaining and fun. Most of the chefs here were about as fun as a bag of sand. $85 to confirm what we already knew. We will never go back to this place. It blows my mind how packed the place was. Honestly do yourself a favor. Drive right past this place and hop on the highway to Worcester. Go to Kyoto or Sawa and experience and taste the difference. I guarantee you will never go back to Chopsticks again. Some other noteable events during our visit 1) Girl at table behind as asks her friend for a tampon across the table 2) Chef cuts up raw chicken with his knife and puts the knife back into the sheath on his hip. Do not be fooled, this restaurant does not deserve a single star, however, for the sake of the review, I need to rate this place as a 1 star. Me and 9 other friends decided to drop in on Chopsticks after a long day of skiing. We called in earlier during the day and set up a reservation for 8pm for 10 people for the Hibachi experience. We show up at 8pm, we are automatically shoved to the bar because apparently there was no table for us. After 45min of sitting at the bar, we finally get notification that we have a table available to us, a table with 8 chairs. As you can imagine, we expected 10 chairs or a table that can fit 10 as this was why we called in a reservation for 10. After an embarrassing 5 minutes trying to figure out what happened, we asked the waiter if we can talk to a manager, our waiter responds that there is "No manager". After finally tracking down the manager, we were offered no resolution and were forced to leave the restaurant. I've worked at a well-known Asian restaurant in the Boston area, so I am fair and understanding when it comes to the business. Usually, I can side with the restaurant over typical issues with customers, however, I cannot fathom the idea that this restaurant would book a reservation for 10 when they knew very well that they could not fit 10 people at a hibachi table, have us wait over 45minutes for a table(the restaurant was not at capacity) then offer no resolution other than to go eat somewhere else. I've tried looking at this from different angles and I finally came to the conclusion that although we as consumers deserve quality service, usually, in the restaurant industry the customer service directly reflects it's typical customers. I wish I could write about how great the food was and how it made up for the bad service, but since I didn't even get a chance to eat.....I will never know. We went to Chopsticks after there was a 3 hour wait at The Olive Garden, and just needed some dinner. We walked in reluctantly We got the "Valentine's Day" buffet...and there was nothing sweet about it. Within MINUTES of putting the first chicken finger and won ton in our mouths we got Valentine's day diarrhea...which is the most special kind. We did NOT eat any out of the ordinary, exotic food there. We had chicken fingers, boneless spare ribs, won tons, chicken wings, and Peking Ravioli along with some pork fried rice.
