Writing all these reviews has made me realise just how much money I spend on food (i.e. not from…read morethe supermarket). I must endeavour to find a cookbook and rediscover the lost art of knowing exactly what you are eating. That said, when food tastes as good as it does from Lahori Kebabish I'd just say put the whisk and chopping board away my friends. I don't think its been here very long but me and my friends discovered this the other week - we were cruising around in my friend's car looking for somewhere we could grab some food. You see, after a few bad run ins with waiting forever for home delivery, we prefer to take matters into our own hands. Lahori Kebabish is pretty good value for money - for under a tenner, you get three different curries plus loads of pilau rice etc. With cheap prices comes mediocre tastes but we were all plesantly surprised. We'll definitely be trying here again for the next film night - good food to share/ mix and match.

When you…read moretaste the 'apna' style, lumpwood charcoaled kebabs here you can see why, but it isn't just kebabs that they offer. The menu is extensive and covers many mediterranean classics as well as a large choice of curries, karahis, biriyanis, steaks, vegetarian options and even a kid's menu. It doesn't look like much from the outside but inside the decor is modern and clean and the service is quick, even quicker if you're purchasing the faster items. Kebabish also delivers, but only until midnight so eat before you drink! Cheap and good value, especially as it's BYOB.

McDonald's - Quarter Pounder with Cheese (and added lettuce), and medium fries

While this is not a 24-7 location, they are open between 5 am and midnight, which is reasonable, they also have a drive-thru. It can get very busy on a match-day at the Etihad, with many fans liking to come in before and after the game, admittedly I've only ever visited this McDonald's on a matchday, and the staff do try their best to deal with demand quickly, even at busy periods, which is nice to see. I do find the inside to be a little small, based on how busy this place can get, it would be great to see this store modernised to look more like their restaurants in the city centre, to become easier on the eye, and have more seating, as it can be very difficult to grab a table. Pricing seems to be similar to other McDonald's locations in Manchester, the only difference being they don't charge extra for lettuce here (As of April 2023), which is a bonus. The food standards are OK, you're never going to get the best food in the world from McDonald's, but it met their standards for sure. I ordered my usual Quarter Pounder with cheese and medium fries. The fries were hot (albeit a little bland), but my burger was fine apart from the presentation. (My burger was served in the regular burger box, despite not having a bun, making it hard to eat, rather than the white tray they normally use.) PRO TIP: If you're gluten-free, and you're able to, bring your own bread roll for your burger, or at least some cutlery, the new paper knives and forks are awful, it's impossible to cut into something without them bending all over the place. 3* - OK. Very useful on a match day and one of the latest places opening nearby for food and drink.

The old railway building. Thanks yelp for making me aware. They have a lunch special with a selection of burgers and a chicken sandwich for £10 (at the time of this review 07/2023). That includes a side of fries. I noticed every restaurant that you walk In the host will ask you about any allergies or intolerances. If you let them know you're they will let you know what to avoid. Or if they do not know they will send you a manager who knows. There must have been a huge problem with allergies and it is a great way to avoid it. It is, in the beginning, a bit annoying until you realize it is actually a good thing (I wonder if Mcdonald's to the same - I'll might have to try that). So I ordered the chicken burger with a breaded fried chicken breast some black pepper mayo sauce some salad, Onions, and a slap of avocado. WOW - the nicely tasting breaded chicken was fried to perfection and it was a really big piece without drying out. Good job! the "burner" was definitely the combination of chicken and that avocado spread mixed in With the black Peppercorn mayonnaise - an almost perfect bite. The bun was not too big to get in the way of tasting what's important all other ingredients have been fresh and am tasty the fries also fried to a crisp state without being burned. Hands down a surprisingly great burger. Oh, I will be back - the service was five starts as well quick, knowledgeable, and friendly!

Cheetham Hill is a bit off the beaten path, but as an enthusiast for urban bricolage, I've discovered a fantastic meandering approach footpath from Rochdale Road through new and derelict industrial sites. (More of daytime route, folks!) It's the familiar curry café scenario here with the menu of the day on a whiteboard and seating for 30 at canteen tables. Both Kabanas are gleamingly whitewashed and clean. This Kabana wins foodie points for big, juicy chunks of aubergine, tomato and potato in the daily special, and also the range of complimentary (free) garnishes - coriander leaf, fresh ginger, fresh chilli, roast cumin seed and a sweet digestive masala for afters. Fried rice was OK, and the chapati was a bit elastic - I would plan asking for a couple of chapatis cooked to order next time and skip the rice. The spicing of the curries was significantly hotter than I normally prefer, with the heat drowning the other flavours a bit. However, the heat wasn't a straight blast of chilli, and I identified whole black peppercorns, whole clove and green cardamon. Between the spicing and the way the veg was cooked, this is a more authentic curry café. Whilst wider Cheetham Hill is not much of a conventional tourist destination, the vibe in Kabana is lively and up there with the best egalitarian venues. There seemed to be enough tables - but only just - when offices workers converged en masse at 1pm. But customer turnover is fast, so there should always be a seat for everyone. Curry cafés are good for foodies, vegetarian or not, as their foucs is all on putting great value on the plate - no staging, no marketing. I recommend trying Kabana alongside other top places featured on my 'Curry Cafés of Manchester' list.
