Well Google told me about balti, some kind of Indian curry dish. I love curry so I wanted to give balti a try. Hen and Chickens came up when I was looking for a restaurant serving Balti, and it was close to my hostel. Outside looks like a typical pub. Inside it's not a huge pub/restaurant, but the high ceiling and big windows let in lots of light (even in December) and makes it feel nice and open. I was there in mid-afternoon and it wasn't too busy. I ordered the lamb balti with garlic naan. I also got a pint of beer. The food was delicious. Apparently balti just refers to the type of dish the curry is cooked in, but I also read that it's a curry made with vegetable oil (rather than ghee). I'm a bit lactose intolerant and sometimes curries can give me issues. Maybe it's because balti is apparently made with veg oil, but I had no issues. The curry had a nice spice, but wasn't overwhelming. Staff was nice. Food was great. This looks like nothing special on the outside, but inside there's some really great Indian food. If I'm in Birmingham again I'd definitely come back here.

Oh I guess even if you never lived in China you'll probably realize that something is up. Simply stated, I think that a great way to check if a restaurant is authentic is if you are the only person there who does not come from the country where the food is from... This restaurant brings heavy Szechuan influence to its dishes and the main focus is hot pot and open face grill. Hot pot is a meal where you get a soup pot full of broth (normal or spicy) and then you add the meats and veggies you want to be cooked in the pot. It gets better and better as you cook more stuff.... Well if you cook good stuff and pick the right combos. They provide each table with individual hot plaques built into the table's surface at each place and a grill in the middle where you can grill some shrimp or thinly sliced beef or lamb. They have a buffet deal for all you can eat hot pot and grill ingredients for about 16£ and although it might not inspire the untrained eye - the selection of meats and veggies (and sauces) is just like what you would have in China. I also have tried several other dishes and I highly recommend the dumplings, the eggplant (the best I have found in the UK), and the spicy "Han" noodles (with a cucumber, garlic, and chili sauce - again not for the faint of taste bud). Don't forget a pot of tea to wash it down and cool off from the spices! The staff are super friendly and are happy to exchange in Chinese if you know a few words :) I love this spot and will be coming back for more soon!

Lately it's had a small refurb with much comfier seats added but it seems to be so busy that it's hard to get one a lot of the time. They seem to struggle with orders during peak time and my last visit they got my friends and my order wrong. They just gave me a regular nasi box which has less fish and some chicken - after the fiasco with my friends whose a vegetarian and got prawns i really couldn't be bothered to argue. Just check your order before you leave. I tolerate the odd mistake because when my friend forgets to ask for the write noodle they have on more than one occasion replaced her order - they don't have to do this. They have a loyalty card scheme so 5 stamps is a free side, 10 a free box with different offers running on certain days of the week e.g Monday you get double stamps and so on. They also deliver, the catchment area is quite small sadly. Despite the odd hiccup I will continue to go back.
