My experience with Dr. Benjamin Shirley and his receptionist, Ana, was rushed, dismissive, and…read moreseriously lacking in compassion and professionalism. Ana's demeanor was robotic and rude. She seemed irritated by questions, repeatedly offering scripted responses rather than addressing my concerns. Her attitude heightened my anxiety before I even saw the dentist. Instead of taking a moment to understand my anxiety, Dr. Shirley pressured me to use nitrous oxide and openly called me out for crying, "You're crying and I'm just trying to introduce myself!", which made matters worse. I reluctantly agreed and he roughly positioned the nasal cannula and tubing so tightly that I felt strapped to the chair. I became distressed, grabbing at the hoses to reposition them. Despite my anxiety and violent gagging during X-rays, he repeatedly insisted, "Breathe through your nose, the laughing gas helps with gagging." Repeating that something should work doesn't make it work. I had submitted recent X-rays (taken Sept 23, 2026) and specifically requested we review them before taking more, since my large mandibular tori and strong gag reflex make X-rays painful. He brushed aside my concerns and proceeded without discussion. The cleaning was rough and incomplete. He even missed a popcorn kernel lodged behind a lower front tooth, which I had to remove myself when I got home. He also recommended replacing a crown, a recommendation two other dentists subsequently disagreed with after examining my teeth and X-rays. Rather than explaining his findings and treatment plan himself, Dr. Shirley deferred to Ana, who hadn't even been present during the examination or cleaning. When I tried to pay and leave, she kept me waiting another 15 minutes or more, then began discussing my treatment plan in the lobby within earshot of another patient. I had to request privacy. When I calmly expressed concerns about her poor communication and interpersonal skills, she summoned Dr. Shirley as though I were causing a scene. I wasn't. He wouldn't even address me, leaving me feeling that her perspective mattered more than my concerns as a patient. I was looking for a gentle, conservative dentist who listens and communicates. Instead, I felt like I was just another appointment to rush through. Nitrous oxide is no substitute for compassion, and patients deserve to be heard, respected, and treated with dignity.

I didn't know how she would stay in the chair while they performed the cleaning. They were prepared for it all. A warm and friendly environment that was great for kids. They gave her toys right when she walked in and got her warmed up. The dentist and assistant were great the whole time and helped to keep her calm. I have never felt like my treatment has been rushed. The office is always extremely clean and organized. The staff is friendly, professional, and they even greet you by name. When I got the office I was trembling no lie. The front desk staff immediately set me at ease with a smile, a coaster for my Starbucks and questions about my weekend. Honestly some of the nicest office staff I've ever encountered. I was brought back within 2 minutes by the hygienist who's name is pronounced like "win". They made him feel so welcome and comfortable. He allowed the hygienist to clean his teeth without any issues. They provided so many fun little toys throughout the process. And they even have TVs on the ceiling. As for the adult cleaning for myself and my wife: everything was quick and smooth. The rooms and facility are clean, and the staff and dentist want to make sure you don't have any concerns about your teeth. They're very thorough. Dr. Syoum even does the cleaning himself, not by a dental hygenist. Explains things to you while he works, and shows you whats going on. Xray machine is more modern and takes a 360 degree film of your mouth, which is awesome! He has a basket of freebies at the desk with floss, toothpaste and toothbrushes. Apparently he had an office midtown years back but got smart and moved his clinic to the basement of the brownstone he owns.
