We were hosting an event at my work I helped coordinate, and wanted a few food trucks. I emailed Chivanada and Daniel responded so quickly and kindly with all the information needed. He was so easy to work with. They arrived on time, and were super popular! We had them and one other food truck there. While I heard rave reviews of both, there was a constant line for this one. Personally, I tried the beef and chicken empanadas and the avocado/tomato salad. That gooey Gouda cheese was the perfect addition. I was not a huge fan of the white dipping sauce, but it was still good. I prefer a chimichurri sauce for empanadas, but that's just me. I was really excited to try their empanadas, especially given that they're gluten-free! Some empanadas are wheat based, but these are based from corn. I ordered a beef and shrimp empanada. The total was $14, and it's great that you get to mix and match any two for $14. I was a little bit, disappointed by how salty the empanadas were. I felt like I was sprinkling lime juice in using the cream sauce, just to dull down the saltines rather than for the flavor. The beef and cheese empanada was a bit oily, but less salty, whereas the shrimp empanada was quite salty. I was, however, quite impressed by the yucca fries. Caveat: I had Chivanada at a Yelp event. Not a paid endorsement, but like to be open about things like this. One of the most colorful food trucks in the Nashville area, this is an Columbian empanada paradise. My understanding is the empies are all gluten free, as well, which is a bonus. Well done beef empanada. One of the best I have had in my life (the best being Empa Mundo in Irving, Texas). Seems like a simple thing, but the empie, the unique mix of beef, gouda, and spices, and the sauce just work. Simple comfort food, but well done. I would also consider adding on an Avo-Tomato salad or Platano Maduro to round out the meal. Drinks also very authentic for the type of food. Got to check out this food truck when I was seeing a show this weekend at Basement East. I love that this was parked outside and that I was able to bring the food in with me! I didn't love that every single one has cheese (even the vegan ones had vegan cheese). Assuming that's standard, I tried the Vegan Mushroom one & the Beef one. The mushroom one was good-I liked the flavors and it was good with the lime. I didn't like the ground beef seasoning, I only tried the meat inside with a fork for a few bites and then didn't finish it. I'd probably get the mushroom one again for the next show I attend at this venue. Wouldn't make my way out for these if there wasn't a show to attend, though. These empanadas were so overwhelmingly delicious that I had to close my eyes to eat them! The empanada shell was so golden and crunchy it was truly perfect. I couldn't choose between the chicken and the beef, but luckily I was able to get one of each. The chicken was great, but the beef was truly outstanding. It was so moist and the flavor was SO good. Pre-lockdown experience. Glad to see these guys are still going strong. Nashville doesn't have a ton of Colombian offerings so I am glad to see that people are responding to this concept. It's also nice to see a decidedly local (and, small) food offering in a city that's dang-near pricing everything else out in favor of out-of-town chains. Living in Miami, eating Colombian food wasn't anything special. In fact, you might call doing so 'Tuesday.' Here in Nashville, it's a bit more rarefied. When I first heard about the truck, I was all in to check it out but because I am stodgy in my food ways, I'm not one to chase a truck. So time moved on and nary an empanada crossed my lips. Reaching my limit, I resolved to fix this and discovered the truck a neighborhood away from me. Figuring this was better than in the Wilson County hinterlands, I made my way to East End and prepared to eat all the food. Rolling up, the truck's distinctive. Rather than a usual food truck, this bad boy is a school bus. Me gusta. AND it's tricked out in eye-catching designs and pumps music to get you in a South American mood. You can also smell what they're cooking so the sensory marketing campaign is in full effect -- and it works. Oh, and did I mention the folks who run the truck/business are genuinely nice? Yeah. That, too. There's a ton of win here, people. Since this wasn't my first trip to the rodeo and was starting to put on my winter weight, I went all in to shrimp (onion butter and gouda), beef (gouda and spices) and chicken (pulled chicken, spices, gouda).* Because all the offerings were gluten-free, I felt cute enough to get a side avo-tomato salad (avocado, tomato, onion, lettuce, and lime), as well. You know... to be healthy and stuff. Everything tasted incredible: abundant meat, balanced seasoning, creamy cheese, and cornmeal empanadas with bite, chew and just a little crunch at the edges. I miss VERY FEW things about Miami but eating South American fare on the regular is one of them. Came across this food truck at some festival in the park, and I'm so glad l decided to try it out! I ordered two empanadas. One beef, one cheese, and then a side of the tomato/avocado salad. I was not expecting the salad to be so good. It's just tomatoes and avocados , right? ...but it was so fresh, flavorful, and perfectly lightly seasoned. It was the perfect complement to the empanadas.. Fresh, hot, empanadas. These things were SO so good. Crisp on the outside, and ooey gooey cheesey flavorful goodness inside. The chocolate and cheese didn't go to well together, but the cheese and lenthils did! The straight cheese would be great for anyone who loves a lot of cheese, me personally I love cheese but that was TOO much. Our plantains were also burnt, not just ours everyone before us too. Like I mean burnt, not dark brown, Burnt. The chicken was good too! The price is a little insane but it's in downtown nashville, so sounds right to me. The only downside is we had to play a guessing game to find out which empanada was which, which can be confusing for people with dietary restrictions. They should work on that. My FAVORITE empanadas. I've tried them all!! Chivanada has Colombian style empanadas, which have a corn masa shell, not the flour based one that resembles a pie crust. Both are good, but I prefer the corn because the shell is the perfect combo of crispy and chewy. Seriously satisfying. My favorite are the beef and the cheese. If you're into melty cheese pulls, prepare yourself for the cheese empanada. Also, the buñuelos are absolutely delicious treats. The uniquely awesome artwork on the truck is really hard to miss. It was different. Never tasted a Colombian empanada like these. Ground beef and cheese was weird. No aji colombiano which traditionally comes with empanadas, instead they had some kind of sour creme and a lime. The buñuelos were good. Saw the tostones and they looked good.
