Their dedication to locality and seasonality is appreciated and one of the many reasons why I love this spot. As is the customer service - they treat every customer like they're the most important customer in the entire world. I've witnessed them carry bags and boxes of produce elderly folks have purchased out to their car for them; I've also been on the receiving end of that kindness as the employees have patiently checked their "back room" for something I might specifically need that I can't find (sometimes this is as neurotic and trivial as an avocado that's "not so ripe"). I've even been called before by the folks who work here when something I needed finally came in. There's no need for them to overreach for me like that... but they do... and it seems so effortless! The selection here is usually amazing, too. As are the prices (though, I will admit: you can get cheaper tofu, cheese, and eggs elsewhere): avocados for .69 cents?! THAT DOESN'T HAPPEN IN MAINE!!! Enormous bags of fiddleheads from down the road for $2? Poblano peppers for mere change? Pumpkins for .29 to .49 cents a pound? It's true what you've heard: you can get a banana box full of fruits and veg for around $30ish (my total is always either $11 or $30... every. single. time). I don't know how they do it! Yes, Portland's farmers' markets are great. But... there's something very special, very hometown-feeling, about Blackie's (it doesn't hurt that they're far more budget-friendly, too) that I've yet to find elsewhere!

When you pull in you get any picking containers that you will need from the helpful attendant. (This is also the spot that you pay at after picking.) Then you are told which section to drive to for the picking of the day. Once there, lovely ladies will direct you to the row that you may start picking in. As you cover ground you will need to move an orange flag that shows where you have picked so that others won't waist their time and/or over-pick an area. I love it! Good for business, good for the plants, good for me! The strawberries are a little on the small side right now, but it is early in the season. What they lack in size they make up for in taste and numbers. You won't be disappointed. Oh! Plus, they are open from 7-7! Fantastic hours to run out after work for some berries to put together a little shortcake! The taste of summer...

There are various CSA options and pick-up spots ~ and the farm itself is beautiful and welcoming (and they have such a sweet dog!) The farm stand always smells amazing and they play the nicest music. It's a great place to stop in and grab a hostess gift (fresh sourdough, cheese, canned spreads, etc.) Throughout the seasons they offer "pick your own" berries and flowers for members, tours and other events - it's just such a great place to be a part of :) Thank you to Keena & the crew!

The farm stand uses the honor system - which means you pay the marked price in a box and take the jam you are buying. This way of buying is nice because it doesn't require someone to man the stand and also you can visit and buy at any time. We bought three jams to try at home: strawberry rhubarb, peach, and blackberry. We haven't tried any yet but I can tell from the jars and the ingredients used they will be delicious.
