I know in getting a latte brewing is different and espresso is more concentrated, its taste is distinct. Located next to a Johnny Jo's pizza shop and in the front space of bay boy sandwiches, this coffee shop is worth a stop if you are in the area. The menu is compact: coffee tea, seasonal drinks and sweet and savory breakfast items. They offer milk alternatives and vegan food options. I ordered the almond cookie latte with oat milk. So creamy. I slurped it down so fast. It was flavorful but not overly sweet. I just wish it was a bit hotter temp wise. Parking is a challenge. Only street parking. Went on a coffee tasting run recently in KC. To base my reviews, I will say that I have my own espresso set up at home, and have tried coffees across the nation from SF to NYC. Chingu coffee was alright. Got a matcha latte and a cortado - I appreciate that they completed latte art for my cortado. I feel like when a cafe takes the effort to do latte art, the overall barista experience and skill is higher, which is reflected in the taste of the coffee itself. I'll say that the coffee was fine - on par with what I could make at home. Price was reasonable. Matcha latte left a lot to be desired in my opinion. Not much matcha flavor, and overall was dominantly milk. Both drinks came out quick. There was enough seating inside, and it's relatively cozy as well. If you're looking for a chill neighborhood coffee shop to work in, look no further than Chingu Coffee. It was quiet on a Tuesday morning, but it picked up by 9:30 am. There are plenty of two-tops and bar window seating to post up, but there are also some larger group (4-ish seat) tables available. There are a couple of outlets, too, but only at some tables. I can't imagine anyone wouldn't want to share a plug, though. I didn't take any video meetings here, but the Wi-Fi ran just fine with me and four other people working. On to the coffee. I had a seasonal iced latte with orange thyme and a kimchi Danish. Both were good, but I would've preferred the Danish to be a little more kimchi-forward. However, I understand not everyone wants chunky fermentables. If you're here working long enough, you might see the foot traffic pick up for Bay Boy in the back of the space. Chingu Coffee had been on my radar for a while when I stopped in for a meeting last fall. I wasn't totally sure what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this little cafe. First of all it's located in west plaza so the location is nice. Just off the business of the plaza shops and it's attached to Bay Boy Sandwiches, another one of my local faves. While the drinks they offer do have a Korean twist to some of them, the cafe itself has a very modern American coffee shop vibe. It's not big inside but it's large enough to find a table to work or meet with someone if you time it right. What made this a 5 over a 4 Star for me was the specialty latte I had and the service. The drink had a great flavor profile and wasn't overly sweet while still packing some unique flavors. The staff was approachable and kind, which you don't always find at hip little shops like this. Was my first time stoping by this coffee shop and was very pleased with the quality of service and how quickly we got are order given there was one guy working. We spent 40$ on 4 coffees and a breakfast sandwich with a sweet treat. I was hesitant to spend 9 on the breakfast sandwich given most places are just warmed up frozen sandwiches and this probably was too but had good portion of meat and was tasty so I was pleased. It just looks like a little corner shop from the street, but it was open and had loads of tables and d seating. Definitely wheelchairs accessible! I just got a drip coffee and a lemon poppyseed muffin, but it was excellent. They had two different brewed options: Costa Rica and Guatemala. I ended up having a cup of each and both were excellent. Dark and rich, a little nutty. I love that the drip coffee comes with refills. I brought my laptop and worked for a half hour before my friends showed up. One of the best meals that I have had this year was at Chingu; the Korean hot spot that is less than a year old, blew me away with the multiple Korean dishes i enjoyed, and they will definitely be near the top in my annual Top 10 list of new restaurants. When I found out that they had opened a coffee shop in the West Plaza, I knew that I needed to check out what Korean magic they had performed with the coffee bean. A buddy that had spent time in S. Korea and raved about the whipped coffee drink he fell in love with there and yearned for here. My drive across town to visit Chingu certainly left me amazed...in that Nothing on the menu was Korean in any aspect. They are roasting their own beans and that is commendable and my Cortado was adequate, but I just felt let down. The name seems a little misleading and I would recommend "The Generic West Plaza Coffee Shop with Limited Parking Options". Would I return? Only if I'm visiting Bay Boy for a 5 star sandwich. Living just steps away from 47th and Holly and driving past this establishment every day has had me eagerly anticipating the opening of this neighborhood coffee shop. After reading all the glowing reviews of Chef Keeyoung Kim's Westport restaurant, Chingu, - "the most exciting restaurant to open in KC in months," says Liz Cook - I really had higher expectations of what I would experience from Chingu coffee. In the same Pitch review, Cook had hinted at "a coffee shop spin-off with Korean-influenced pastries." The recent success of local coffee shops that were designed to show off the culture of their owners led me to expect a Korean-themed coffee paradise on this little West Plaza corner. Nearby Café Corazón's menu and decor are completely influenced by Central and South American culture. Similarly, Cafe Cà Phê's menu and interior design make it impossible to ignore the cafe owner's Vietnamese heritage. When I walked into Chingu Coffee this morning I was pleasantly surprised to find it packed. Every table in the coffee shop side of the establishment was full of patrons. Yet I was even more surprised and disappointed to find that the entire aesthetic is pleasantly....bland. It seems to be a trend lately that coffee be minimalist. Small menus, two or three syrup flavors, sparse Scandinavian-inspired interiors with pale wood, white walls, a plant or two, and zero clutter. This is all...fine. I don't mind it so much at Sway Coffee Roasters which rounds out the Scandinavian aesthetic with lots of comfy and varied seating options, but Chingu doesn't even offer that bit of respite. Since it was a hot morning, I opted for an iced latte. The syrup flavors are few and uninspiring. I chose the most original of the bunch, the Lavender Vanilla. Lavender can sometimes be overpowering, but many local shops manage to do it right. The only size option for iced is a 16-ounce and I found the minimal ice and light-tasting espresso to be overwhelmed by milk and syrup making the drink overly sweet and barely tasting of coffee. I ended up going to work and adding a shot of Vietnamese coffee to my drink to try to balance it out. I was surprised to find zero Korean influence here. Coffee in Korea is arguably more heavily entrenched in the culture than here in the States. The iced Americano is practically the national drink. And while it is heavily Americanized with Starbucks being the primary coffee brand on the scene, there is plenty of individuality to be found. I'm wondering, where's the sweet potato latte, the cinnamon cappuccino, the green tea frappuccino, the honey cheese bread or waffle, the Dalonga coffee!? I did order an Orange Curd Danish. This was extremely tasty and worth a return visit. The donuts served are from Mr. D's. I didn't notice until I looked at my photos later that there was actually another danish with Korean flavors - a savory Kimchi Bacon Danish. The sign wasn't near the plate and I didn't realize that the pastries actually do have Korean influences. This is a step in the right direction, but I'm not sure why I would return here for coffee that's no different from what I can get from a dozen different shops in the area. Maybe I'll try something other than an iced latte and it will blow my mind, but I don't have high hopes at this point. I noticed that Chingu has expanded back all the way to Bay Boy and there is now a Bay Boy dining room that is visible from Chingu. There is a half-wall divider between the coffee seating and the Bay Boy seating, but I imagine that coffee drinkers will overflow into that space. I would love to see some collaboration with a breakfast sandwich offering on Bay Boy bread or something of the like. But, Chef Kim, please put your influence on the drinks at Chingu and not just the pastries! Coffee lovers flock to Cafe Cà Phê and Café Corazón for a reason - and it's not because their coffee is the same as every other coffee in town! read more

I was so excited for Chingu to open, and when I found out that they were also making a coffee shop, O M G I was seriously so excited too. I actually stopped by in December 2022 when they were still doing pop-ups - the staff was SO nice and made me a complimentary latte (since they ran out of their normal brew that day). They said that this wasn't even their best espresso machine they were using, but the latte was already pretty solid. So I had some high expectations when the storefront actually opened. And of course, they delivered! Good service, great ambiance, and of course, a mix of Korean taste into their coffee! I don't live in the area. But, I have always been intrigued by Chingu Coffee while getting a sandwich at the (connected by a dining room) sandwich shop adjacent. However, Chingu is always closed when I get a sandwich for dinner. The space is lovely yet simple. I love the idea of two business sharing a seating area; it is only kind of separated by a partial wall. They have standard-ish coffee shop hours. Since their schedule isn't posted on Yelp, I'll include it here (taken from Google as their own website doesn't have hours): Monday closed, Tuesday thru Friday 7-2, and Saturdays and Sunday 8-2. They roast their own beans in house. However, I wasn't feeling coffee that day so got an iced Matcha Latte. It was delicious and not overly sweet like some places. I also bought some of their Columbia Inzu beans and had them grind it for cold brew at home. The bag doesn't indicate how much it weighed (which I thought was a little bit weird but it looks like 12 oz. Overall, a very pleasant experience and I will definitely return. read more

I love that Chingu shares a space with Bay Boy. I got to grab my lunch and then finish it off with a coffee from them which was delicious. They do house made flavors and they do them right. I got to come to the first day of the grand opening and while it was busy, they were able to make drinks fairly quickly and they provide what you expect of a high quality craft coffee beverage. We ordered a red bean vanilla latte and an iced chai tea with vanilla. It turned out great and the red bean was a nice, subtle touch. It was not overpowering in anyway but helped make it stand out a bit. The iced chai tea was nice and strong, but balanced with the sweetness and I was happy with it even though I don't think chai tea that much. The next time I go, I will be trying misugaru because the coffee combo sounds interesting to me. It makes sense to me and I am glad they thought of it because I had not and I make experimental coffee at home too! The coffee shop was clean and simplistic which really helped you clear your thoughts, have great conversations, and/or even help you get some work done. Its nestled in the quiet neighborhood close to the plaza and it's connected to bay boy which is a genius idea for food pairings, but also because bay boy has a strong reputation in the community and on yelp! Chingu Coffee has quickly become my favorite coffee shop in KC. Their lattes and flavorings are perfection. The misugaru latte is my go to, but I'm also partial to the lavender vanilla and they've done a great job on seasonals as well. This is also my favorite place to get beans for coffee at home. I don't remember which varieties we've tried, but so far they have all been shockingly flavorful and unique. The sausage burrito is also one of my fave grab and go breakfast options in KC as well. It's a Korean spin on a classic sausage egg and cheese burrito, with rice and ground pork and a flavorful gochujang sauce for dipping. It's got a nice spice to it without being overwhelming (or regretful) as an early morning meal. They panini press them too so it's got a nice crunch and they are compact and easy to eat without making a mess. My only complaint? A 10oz latte is too small for me and a 16oz is too big. A petty thing to complain about? Sure. But here's hoping they invest in 12oz cups in the future! read more
