I heard from friends who had traveled through Clarinda that the Hua Yung restaurant was both charming in a traditional Chinese way, and had a delicious buffet with both Americanized and traditional Chinese food. I am a big fan of Chinese food, so a few friends and I drove there to check it out. Both the ambiance and the food were fantastic. It was well worth the several hour drive that we took to get there. If I lived near Clarinda, I would be frequent customer of this restaurant. I was really surprised to see a few negative reviews as well. I makes me wonder, "were we in the same restaurant"? The ambiance was nice. The decor was charming. The place was really clean and neat. The food was fresh and delicious. The service was prompt and kind. I don't have a single negative thing to say. The buffet here is pretty good, they offer a nice variety, and put out just enough, that fresh food is restocked often . It seems to be a "family-run" businesss. "Old-school" Chinese decor. Lanterns Zodiac paper placemats And such The made -to -order menu items are even better , though it always seems tempting to "just get the buffet" which is a very fair(cheap) price. They Have most of the classics offered . Also soups ( excellent hot & sour soup here!) and a wide choice of desserts ! Fancy pastries, almond cookies, fruits & puddings! I really like the "pu-pu plAtter". It has a nice assortment of filling appetizers . Always get dumpling sauce for dip. if I could give a negative rating, I would! you can tell the food has been left out all day, dried out, barely anything left and they're just sitting at a table on their phones not ensuring freshly cooked and safe food for their customers is made! the rice is seriously dried out and crunchy and chicken is cold and disgusting! in all honesty, they need the food inspectors/health dept here read more

I think the real name of this place is something like Hua Yung Buffet. My receipt got wet, but that's what it looks like. We ended up going here at 8:45 on a weeknight in hopes of finding something that a) wasn't fried, and b) had vegetables. We figured if it looked scary (which ANY buffet can be that late on a weeknight in any small town), we'd just leave and find something else. It's not fair to rate this place against the Chinese food I've had in large cities that have the population base to support authentic Asian foods, so I'm rating it in comparison to other food we had in the Clarinda area and on its own merits. Even so, it's better than some Chinese buffets I've had in much larger towns. The place is time-worn, and it's not very promising from the outside. That said, the service is warm and friendly, and the buffet is well maintained -- clean, at proper temps, and with a wide variety of foods. There are some selections that made me wonder why they were on a Chinese buffet, but I figured that was a concession to being one of the few "ethnic" restaurants in a small town. The egg drop soup was very nice, as good as any I've had. Eggrolls were a tad mushy, but not bad. (The mustard had a weird flavor and wasn't very hot, though.) The crab ragoon were fresh and had a good amount of filling. There were plenty of dishes to choose from, even at that late hour, and the host graciously offered to have more made if we ran out of anything. And, yes, there were vegetables in the dishes, which made me very happy. There is a dessert area with a surprisingly good rice pudding (I assume that's one of the concessions to the local population), fresh fruits, some canned fruits, and small individual pastries and cakes. I didn't try any of the baked goods, being more interested in the fresh melon and whatever that addictive pudding was. I was a little surprised they didn't have green tea, but the hot tea they serve has a nice flavor and was freshly prepared. In spite of the late hour, we never felt rushed or as if they were waiting for us to leave. There were two or three other tables eating when we arrived, and I think one other couple came in while we were there. Dinner for two came in at just under $20. Regret. Regret and the taste of failure. That is what they serve here. There is a good selection of food, most of it over salted or fried. the desserts are pre made, and the service is dreadful if the owner is around. If the owner isn't right there, the service improves, and you can enjoy the soups; the only decent homemade item in the place. If you don't care about your salt intake or the taste, it is a decent choice. It is as fast as you are, and ready to go without waiting. If you want a delicious meal, keep driving a few blocks east. read more

This place is a dump. Floor is absolutely filthy. Food is tasteless, buffeted dried out, and food not replaced when it should be. Watched one of the cooks come out grab a huge glass of ice and pour it full from the biggest bottle of hard liquor I've ever seen. Could smell the alcohol so know it was booze for sure. Probably needs a health inspection. read more
