When we arrived there was already a lot of people hanging out. Some lounging, some swimming, fishing and dancing. It reminds me of a spring break hang out. We watched the sunset. Not sure if a lot of tourists know about this spot for sunset and views but I highly recommend you coming here on your next trip. This has to be one of the most fun places to watch the sunset and it makes you feel like a local. Been here every time I've visited and it's such a vibe. There's music playing, people cliff jumping and drinking while the sun's going down. The majority of the crowd is on the younger side too. This is one of my favorite spots to watch the sunset on Oahu. It's not as much of a beach as it is a spot where VERY EXPERIENCED surfers and divers get in the water, and where the rest of us mostly just hang out on the rocks and enjoy the view. Please pay close attention to the tides, never go out alone even if you are experienced. There's really no direct path into the water, so if you do go in you'll have to time a wave and jump in. You'll have to time the waves to get out of the water too while avoiding crashing into the rocks. I would say that this spot attracts a younger crowd, so be prepared for music being played and young folks playing drinking games. Parking is in the neighborhood up the road-- keep an eye out and be sure to not block any residents. read more

Great place to see beautiful scenic cliffs and to have a refreshing fun swim but only for strong swimmers who are experienced with ocean waves near rocks. Did some limited snorkeling here - not much to see - it's more of a fun place to jump off the rocks into the clear blue ocean water below. Jumping in is easy, but you need to watch other experienced swimmers get out to know where to climb and how to time it right. They make it look easy but you can't be intimidated. If you think it's too rough for you, don't go in. There is a small cove around the corner where you may walk out but it's sketchy as the waves often break in that cove making it also a timing thing. Honestly it's easier just climbing out on the rock walls when the waves push you up. If you love swimming and jumping, this is IT. read more

Really cool spot that the locals cliff jump from. It is in the middle of a high end neighborhood, you are able to park a block up from this though unless full. Please keep the noose down and obey speeds for respect. Short walk down to the park, the views are amazing! The surf bashes the rocks below and there are several blowholes and a spitting cave if you venture far enough around to the East. Please note to watch intently for the algae and mold patches that are beyond slick!! There are several houses above built on the cliffs that are beautiful. Again, respect their privacy. If you choose to jump in, note the timing that others before you do and stay away from the high rocks to avoid being swept into hard! There is a low spot that looks like a V that lets you back up to the shelves. read more

I'm not going to be one of those people negatively reviewing a popular area because I couldn't fully enjoy it due to the weather (Google bad reviews of national parks it's hilarious - "grand canyon is just a big hole") but came here for the first time in Hawaii ever as a surprise to my husband for jumping. We're from SF/HMB/Pacifica (think Mavericks waves very extreme) and immediately recognized harsh waters while we were at China Walls which was unusual for the season, seen lots of rescues in our area back home and recognized similar dangerous waters. So I felt the need to post this to be very diligent and safe here because tik tok is making people stupid. Don't die for likes please. We came to jump in the waters and couldn't. That sucked. But water was so rough that while we were there I slipped on rocks and accidentally grabbed an emergency buoy. As I'm trying to fix/reattach it, velcro wouldnt work so I kinda loosely knotted it and a man (Brian is THE man actually, he rescues people in his free time for fun (?) he is an *amazing* human) came and fixed it and said "you cant knot these they need to be immediately available. ARE you aware you are standing on the second most dangerous spot in the entire state of Hawaii?" I was NOT and this man educated the crap outta me. He showed me videos of people being swept away into the sea 5ft from where we were standing and that made me yell my husband's name bc I lost sight of him scary - but this is fr an UNSAFE place you need to read signs (Brian asked if I saw any, nope I'm dumb like I said! There are FIVE) and take some time to look at conditions and be smart. Even before him the waters were so angry (Kona winds) I was thinking "heck nooo won't let me or my man jump here" Don't jump for your Tik Toks or Insta likes because the ocean while beautiful is dangerous and unforgiving. Take it from someone who also lives near the ocean and visits regularly in another dangerous spot and hears helicoper rescues all the time. You do NOT want to be rescued on vacation k? Also if you are going to be rescued you may be on the hook for a $10k+ bill depending on the circumstances. Because your disregard for safety triggered like 5 departments emergency response teams. The last sunset of September 2020... There's beauty all around us. Sometimes, it's more challenging to find... It does exist... Living on Oahu most of my life, I have never been to China Walls. I used Google to search for the best spot in the island for sunsets and China Walls was on the top of the list. China Walls is known for its cliff where people jump off into the ocean. It's quite dangerous and thrilling. I didn't attempt the hike down... I could hear people landing into the water. Haha... yeah... I'll pass! I arrived around 5:30pm and parkied in the residential area before the dead end street. There were a lot of parked cars, so, I was lucky to get a space. I walked to the end of the road and through a little park to get to the edge... and there it was... The vast ocean... And open sky... It was so breathtaking... I visited here and hiked many trails on 09/13 during my first visit to Hawai'i & posted a vlog! Search "Nikko Gandia Travels" on YT. Free street parking. Watch your step, the wet algae on the rocks make it very slippery. Watch your distance from the cliffs, the waves are powerful and can sweep you off your feet. ;) Also if you're going further down, don't get stuck in one of the coves. You can be trapped due to the waves crashing and not being able to cross certain sections because of it. read more

I've seen people need firefighters and assistance. I've felt safe leaving stuff on the walls and then going out to snorkel. The vibe here at this popular sunset watching and cliff diving spot reminded me so much of San Diego. This is the perfect place to bring a date or hang out with friends. You'll see locals and tourists alike here, enjoying there time sunbathing, cliff jumping, dancing or just taking in the view. With some encouragement, I jumped in and somehow managed to climb back out, with some trial and error. Jumping off the cliffs here is not advised for the novice swimmer or the timid, as the swells can change quite quickly, which makes getting back up on the rocks quite interesting if you don't time it correctly. read more

China Walls is located off of port lock in HI Kai in a residential neighborhood. The "adults" whom was there when we went was smoking weed n there was trash everywhere people blasting music as if there is NO RESIDENTS near by :( so sad. BUT this view is AMAZING...the water is VERY PRETTY...If u dare to jump the rocks n take a dive in make sure you are a VERY STRONG swimmer as there are freak waves that do come thru and u have to know how to read the swells coming in to get back up from climbing back UP the rocks... This place is amazing for watching sunsets. The party animals there range from young to old but mostly girls who are dressed half naked and young boys smoking pot while blasting their music. Be careful where you sit. My friend and I almost got washed away. Other than the GET THERE ONE HOUR BEFORE SUNSET! The parking is ridiculous and in a residential area so SHOW SOME RESPECT!!! Before they banned that place like Hamama falls and other great attractions. If you are balls to the walls please feel free to jump in but don't die. Parking - Located in a neighborhood, you'll have to find parking outside of a personal residence. Since its such a popular spot, you might have to walk a few blocks, but the neighborhood is extremely nice, so no problems there. Getting there - This has been my favorite place to watch the sunset. There's an open lot with a little square brick path that leads down to the rocks. You may have to climb and be careful of your step getting down, but the whole area is pretty flat once you get down. I wore flip flops and didn't slip on anything, no need for hiking boots. Vibes - The place was incredibly packed when we arrived maybe 15 minutes til sunset. A bunch of people with picnic blankets, groups of people that probably spent the day swimming, and a handful of people taking pro-style photos (think engagement, clothing companies, IG model-y types). Although it was pretty packed, we found our own little perfect spot and had enough distance between us and the people around us. Didn't feel like it was crowded. Lots of people walking dogs though, so beware if dogs put you on high alert. The entire place has a bunch of step like areas, so its easy to keep a good view without someone sitting right in front of you. Amphitheater kind of feel. You can walk along the left side (facing the ocean) and go to the harder to reach areas. *The waves do come up pretty high if you are down on that bottom step. Be careful, or you might end up swimming unintentionally. read more

Nice place to stop. I would recommend taking a Uber or bike so you can get down there. It's in a residential area where you can't park.

I LOVE China Walls. A chill spot with great views. Jumping off the cliff for the first time may seem intimidating for some. Just make sure to jump outwards because the cliff isn't straight. If anything, climbing back up can be trickier because of oncoming waves. Some people try to climb the shorter part of the cliff, but surprisingly it's very easy near the center where there are rocks underneath your feet and holes to grab. It's slippery though because the algae, so just take your time and hold on tight when waves roll past. China Walls is pretty at all times of the day, but it is most stunning during golden hour through sunset. Winter sunsets are perfect because the sun sets on the horizon. During summers though, it sets behind the mountains, but still pretty. It gets pretty crowded during sunset, but there's residential parking. Bring a towel, food, drinks, and just relax! read more

Wanna good place to surf during the summer months? Then just head on over to a park called Koko Kai beach park, this is where China Walls is located. Now for you folks that are not familiar with this surf spot, if you choose to surf at this spot, please be careful!!!! I'm gonna say it again............PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!! After getting down to the shoreline area, there is no pathway to get into the water. So what do you do? Time the wave, throw down your board into the water, & quickly jump into the water to retrieve your board. The surf area is not too big, but when the waves are pumping, you will see the wave crash against the rock wall which amplifies the wave height. The people who come here to surf obviously know a thing or two about this place because if you don't, I highly advise you to pass on this surf spot as it can be real dangerous! The view from China Walls is spectacular! If anything, China Walls is a great spot to sun bathe on the rocks. Maybe swim on a very calm day (if you're a good waterman) because this place has a strong undertow. . Don't expect to lay on any sand, because there is no sand (this is not the type of place). If you want sand, go to Hanauma Bay instead. When I checked my old stomping grounds today, I noticed it was pretty calm. There were about 15 or so surfers out in the water today, but I only saw 4 or 5 sets roll in which was rideable. . A real cool place to check out, but please use your common sense when visiting China Walls. read more

There's an old saying that you should never turn your back on the ocean. That saying is very, very, very applicable to China Walls. This has always been a favorite spot of mine to take out of town guests to get great photos, but please remember in your quest for the perfect shot to keep your eye out for rogue waves. I've seen tourists over the years recklessly jump in and struggle to pull themselves out. I wouldn't do that, let alone go near the edge, unless you are a superb swimmer. I've seen great surfers here busted up with wave sets. If not with an out of town guest, this is an non crowded, great spot to tan, have a few beers, and take in the sights of ocean and mountains. Stay closer to the rock walls, it's quite slippery near the edges by the water due to algae growth and both my husband and I have eaten it out there. Parking is not available in the culdesac at the end of Hanapepe Pl. which the entrance is on. It's easier to find parking on the street prior, Hanapepe Loop. China Walls is also called Koko Kai Mini Beach Park, which is what you'll see a sign for. Overall a great place to relax and get great shots of well everything, it's so beautiful you can't take bad photos here if you tried! read more

What a spot to experience the ocean. Hidden away in what seems like the Hawaiian version of suburbia is China Walls, an outcropping of shelf-like rocks positioned as stairs to the Big Blue. Pay attention to the tides and only go if you've got experience or are with someone who does. Not for beginning swimmers. Getting back on the rocks requires agility and timing as you ride the waves up and set yourself down before the water recedes. Snorkeling can be great here if the tides are right (I'm a noob snorkeler so can't give more info). Went in September 2021 and it was poor visibility and choppy water. Even at the peak of my energy and youth, I would never be adventurous enough to ride the waves of the China Walls. It was neat to see all the locals do it, though. Looked like there were a bunch of high school and college kids on summer break. My fiancé and I found parking easily and made our way through XXX park to this spectacular sight. We hung out on the rocks, which were quite hot from the sun. I'd recommend bringing a blanket and lots of sunscreen. There were a ton of people already in the shade and have obviously been there for hours. It's a fun tourist and local attraction. For me, it was a bit underwhelming, and I much prefer the Spitting Caves. If you ARE daring, try jumping off the cliff and riding the waves. Don't get hit by a surfboard, though. Actually the more I think about it, watching everyone just gave me anxiety because I was afraid someone was going to hit a rock or surfboards would collide. These people are talented, and I admire their free-spirited nature! read more

Awesome view for sun set! People jumping from the cliff side and wake boarding and surfing the waves right next to the cliff walls. There it a little grass area right before the walk through down to the cliff walls. Lots of people so super crowded, seems to be a very popular hang out spot for the younger demographic. People had portable grills and were cooking dinner there. Big waves crashing onto the side of the cliff and unobstructed view of sunsets. Best Thinking Spot Ever! or Take a Cannonball off the side! Such a great spot to watch the sunset or the deep sea fishermans by spitting cave. If you have the guts like me or the locals, time the waves just right and cannoball off china walls. You better be a good swimmer here as well as definitely wear really tight athletic shoes. When trying to climb the wall out for either a 2nd jump or a one and done, you will cut your feet on the coral coming out if you don't time the climb out right. You will thank me for the shoes wearing i assure you. A tourist dies here about twice a year. I have surfed here for decades, and have seen a couple people drown, and many more people almost drown. Torusits like to jump in the ocean but have no idea how strong the current and waves are. I once warned a fit guy in his 20's that it was dangerous, but he jumped in anyway. I tried to help him get out but he was immediately panicking and wouldn't listen A few minutes later, after struggling to get back up, his girlfriend called 911 and the lifeguard pulled him out. I've lived in Hawaii my entire life.....I have never been here!! Wow! It's gorgeous. Reason I went: trying to do a wiki-quickie- beach wedding & this was suggested. My kids can swim, I think they swam before they ran. 1/2 fish kinda kids. Ok-so once my kids saw this place....omg they're bugging me to bring them back. We used SIRI and it wasn't that easy to find, since she pronounces every Hawaiian word wrong ..lol. But yes, we did it. I live in Kailua near Kailua beach and understand the plight of the neighbors....so since we're we just driving by to "look"... we made sure to be respectful by being quiet, proceeded to pull over in the cul de sac, hubby never left the driver seat, but did turn car off since we have flowmasters( came with car, not my decision)while my daughter n I ran down to snap these photos. Gorgeous, but obviously dangers to the unkeen eye, street parking in quiet neighborhood - so visitors BE RESPECTFUL, and don't block the street or driveways. Or else it'll turn into Lanikai parking nightmarey Restrictions No bathroom. No lifeguard Deceitfully calm. Watch that under tow/rip!
