    Pele's Chair (volcanic rock formation)

Great little spot to tide pool and swim. Location and parking is the same as the Makapu'u Lighthouse Trail. Walking in from the parking lot, take the first entrance to the right instead of walking up the Lighthouse trail, you'll be walking down a rocky path. It's a little hike down to the beach. Easy enough to do with family and young kids. My 8 yo was calling back to me... "Hurry up slow pokes...." Lol. When had a rainy week a few days before so the ground was a bit muddy this time around. It wasn't too bad...maybe about a half mile walk. You'll see Pele's Chair (a volcanic rock formation shaped like a chair) in the distance, you can't miss it. Walk toward it and you'll see the beach opening to your left side. Alan Davis is a little beach with a few tide pool spots along sides of the beach and opening into the open ocean. I would suggest reef shoes or some sort of foot wear to protect your feet. Also be aware of the tide which is important for safety. Keep your eyes on the ocean always. Waves coming in from the ocean are quite strong when the tide rises. We mainly come here for tide pooling. My kids love tide pooling and have become experts at finding interesting ocean life, creatures, shells and rocks. We bring a bucket to collect hermit crabs and the like...to explore and examine then we return them back to where they can from. We really had a fun family afternoon here. As the sun started to set, we also set off on our hike back to our car. Check this spot out. The sky was beautiful at sunset on the drive out back into town. We had to stop off the side of the road to take pictures. Paradise for sure!

Only takes 11 minutes to walk to Alan Davis from the bottom of Makapu Trail. You can't get lost on the trail, it's a straight shot. You can see the ocean from an opening on the left side. Great for snorkeling and jumping off the rock on the back side of the beach. For all ages.

Alan Davis is a beach that is small and sort of secluded. The most people that I have ever seen here has been only a handful. To get here, you need to walk as if you're going to hike the Makapu`u Light House Trail. Right when it begins, there will be a sign on the right for the Kaiwi Shoreline Trail. Take this and follow the trail. When you're almost there, the trail will split in two. Take the path on the right. Keep going and Alan Davis beach will be straight ahead. The walk should not take too long. You'll know when you're there when you see a rock formation called Pele's Chair above. It's simply a large chair made from stone. If you are feeling adventurous, you can explore a bit on the right of Alan Davis Beach. There is a rocky trail that takes you along the rocky shoreline. Sometimes people go fishing there. Parking shared with the Makapu`u Lighthouse Trail parking lot. If it's during peak times, you may need to park on the shoulder of the road.

After a short walk from the parking lot, you can see the path that leads to the beach.

I couldn't wait to go cliff jumping somewhere on O'ahu! Alan Davis was a good preparation before jumping off higher cliffs. After hiking Koko Head, we headed over towards the Makapu'u Lighthouse parking lot for Alan Davis. There are plenty of parking spaces, but it's usually packed. If anything, people park along the edge near the entrance. Once parked, we started heading down the road until we saw a visible path to the right side. We couldn't miss it as there were signs pointing out the path at the fork. The path is doable even in slippers. You're going downhill to the beach, so expect to be coming up after. The walk is easy enough to bring food and drinks. After about a 10 minute walk, we were at this beautiful secluded beach where other people were relaxing and having lunch. Across the beach there is another path that takes you to where everyone goes to go jump off a wooden pole. If you go right, you'll end up on the sand. We proceeded to the rocky shoreline to the left of the beach to go jump off the wooden posts. It used to be a giant log back when I researched about it and sometimes people would take it down for some reason. When we went, they were smaller square wooden posts that were slippery. Luckily someone put a towel on them for easier grip, but I was still scared of slipping off it and falling off the plank weird. It was quite windy, so the waves were strong coming in, but not strong enough to get us swept. Jumping into the water from the plank was a challenge for me. I would slowly walk my way to the edge of the post while trying to balance so I wouldn't fall in. It was still kind of close to the rocks below, so jumping away from the post would be ideal in order to avoid the rocks. I did a normal jump in and I never touched the bottom, so it was safe. After jumping in I would just swim back to the rocks or tread. The jump isn't too high up, so I feel that anyone can do it. There is another plank to the side which is lower if people are still too afraid of the higher one. The water is pretty nice and clear, so people were snorkeling. There are a few rocks you can stand on in case you can't tread water or swim. Since the waves were strong, it was tough hanging onto the edge cause the water would slam us onto the rocks which wasn't fun at all. Climbing back up was sort of difficult because some of the rocks are slippery, so be careful! Doing this all barefoot sucked too because the black rocks were hot! After seeing someone attempt a front flip, I built the courage to attempt a backflip. The first one I did was pretty smooth as I landed in the water with no problem. My second flip wasn't far enough from the rocks so it looked as if I would fall and hit the rocks below. I was unharmed though! Overall, this place is so calm and awesome! The people around were nice and helpful. The water is beautiful along with the beach. If you want to jump, be cautious because the post is definitely slippery. Jump away from the rocks to avoid any injury. Pick up your own trash so we can keep the place clean. Can't wait to come back again. Hopefully a post will be there to jump off of.

Love it! So much fun here. It's chill for kids, little tide pools on the right that we relaxed in and jumped off the rocks on the left. It's just a short but hot walk from the Makapu'u trailhead. You can hike all around and explore. We did this on the way back from the actual Makapu'u tidepools further up the trail.

Park in the same lot as you would for the Makapuu light house hike, then take the trail to the right. After an easy 20 mins, you'll emerge to a serene little beach that makes you feel like you're on your own private island. Small shallow swimming space and lots of tide pools. Usually a bunch of teens who jump off planks into the water, enjoying the Hawaii sun.

Beautiful!!!! Secluded and chill. Definitely take the time to go. It is at the Makapuu' Trail Head.... that a right at the trailhead at the gravel road.

One of those beaches that you have to go to at least once while on Oahu. It's off the path but easy to walk. Every time I go here there are up to a handful of people at most. It's relaxing and I definitely lose track of time when here. There are no restrooms and parking is hard to find.

I was scared of falling off the plank, since the wood was a little slippery and the wind was definitely blowing!

The jellyfish don't know that Bellows is a semi private beach that requires military ID access to get onto. They are just there like they are there at Kailua, Kalama, Lanikai, and Waimanalo beaches. Going on a Sunday, the beach was not very crowded. We got there around 1100 and there was still parking available in the main parking lot. Not sure why another reviewer complained about no public shower as there is one right at the point where the parking lot ends and the beach begins, right next to the public restroom building. We brought our two dogs and kept them leashed the entire time. I brought our own dog water bowl but recognized it was too small and our dogs kept knocking them over so I walked to the shoppette and was able to purchase a much larger silicone dog dish for their water. Afterwards, we stopped at the reservation building where we sat on the covered deck and had some chicken and french fries as well as some cold drinks. These are all amenities you won't find at Kailua, Lanikai, or Kalama Beach Parks. Nothing but pros and no cons. The best part is, it is o ly about 20 minutes from where we live in Kaneohe. Will go again.
