There before me, was this little Asian restaurant I had never seen. With its neon lit 'Open' sign brightly in my eyes, I'm not sure how I never noticed before. So soon after, I called the troops and said, "Lets give this place a try". We made a reservation and upon our arrival I realised, reservation not necessary, they've got plenty of tables. I thought it would have had smaller space in there judging by its frontage, but to my surprise, plenty of room and even a big round table at the back. There were no tablecloths or any such thing, it was a very basic table setting. Meaning, bare table and a tin holding the chopsticks, but hey, sometimes that's all you need. Walls have random portraits hanging and it almost looks like a clinic in there with the lighting and white walls. In saying that, we passed no judgement whatsoever and the troops and I ordered our Chinese favourites. While going through the menu I came across a dish I haven't seen at other Chinese restaurants, 'Morten Bay Bugs'! YUM!!! Oh, it was good. If my caps-lock doesn't say it loud enough, I don't know what would. Highly recommend this dish to anyone who visits this delectable Asian find. If you plan to go to a restaurant for an intimate dinner with a potential partner, this wouldn't really be the place... Unless the person you're taking out already really loves you, you don't have much to prove and you're both only in it for the food. Because let's face it, you don't come here to 'woo' people. You come to Jindalee Villa to make yourself happy and at the end of the day, what's wrong with that?

You can't remember if it was good or bad or why you haven't been for a while. Well... they call it sinking for a reason as this place was just not what it used to be. We had the salt and pepper squid for entree, very promising... hot, tasty... next please. The curry puffs for another entree.. they came out hot, the sauce was a bit of a mystery to us... not red, not brown... not really sweet and sour... there was a strong vinegar taste and smell to these puffs with every bite. Something had gone off, as my husband put it perfectly, don't they use curry to hide these flavours? So if you can still smell and taste it... it's not good. We didn't eat the other 2. The dishes came out curiously as the shredded beef with Peking sauce was more a sizzling beef in Peking sauce sans the shredding... the braised chicken and veggies were nice, so were the braised veggies with fried tofu. The small cockroaches crawling on the wall next to us the entire time we were there did put me off the food as I counted about 4 or 5 not including the 2 smaller ones we killed.... they seemed to just keep crawling out from somewhere. The chef told the waiter that there was nothing wrong with the curry puffs, but we were asked if we wanted to order anything else which was nice... but unless they spray the place, I don't think we will be back. Note: this restaurant has recently been renovated and looks a lot better, I will have to give the new look a try - keep you posted Yelpers.

The place was empty and I don't know why. The food is absolutely stellar and from the interaction of my parents and my parents' friends with the owner, I can tell they come here often. The Japanese style beef is tender and flavorful, as was the "sang chow guat" which is similar to sweet and sour pork but not as sweet nor as sour. It is so fresh and seasoned beautifully. The salt and pepper tofu is also delicious as is the "sang chow ngau yuk fan" which is a beef fried rice. It was a tad greasy but so tasty. The piece de resistance of the meal was the mud crab topped with rice vermecelli which has soaked up all the flavors from the crab. This was absolutely delicious and we (or shall I say, I) ate every little bit from the clay pot. There are other specials such as the pigeon which I've had years ago on previous visits, and I remember it being very good. The restaurant serves up pretty authentic Chinese food which I find is so hard to find in Brisbane when you want it done well. This place pretty much has remained consistent and is definitely a great place when you're looking for authentic fare. My dad didn't want me to write a review about it because he thought it would make it harder for him to get a table. HAHA.

So I went on a search, asked friends and put my ear to the ground. I heard there was another great chinese little place up the road, still in Centenary... I thought, yes, i'm up for the challenge. I will compare their dishes same for same, and let's see what I find out. That opponent was Good Taste. I am happy to report, it is just that. Or should I call it Great Taste? The Chow Kuey Teow (yummy fried noodle dish, trust me, it's yummy) was fried with the right heat in a wok, giving it that great smoking taste. The sweet and sour pork belly was crispy, sweet and sour and very appetising. The prices were pretty much the same as well. Well call me an asian, sit me in a hawker stall on the naked streets of Kuala Lumpur and hand me a Good Taste dish, I am there. The food is authentic, fresh, piping hot when they serve it, and they are friendly, fast and guess what... if you go there for dinner with a group larger than 4, they give you a free soup appetiser and a free desert, plus oranges. Bonus! Chinese people like their free stuff, so for chinese people to be giving free stuff away, you can only guess what happens. If you can't, it makes chinese people beyond happy! So it comes as no surprise that on Friday nights and weekends, this little Great Tasting place is packed full of big groups of people. Even the derelict shopping centre it's located in won't stop people coming in the door. Love it. Give me some more chilli. Maybe the other chinese place should put 'second best place to get chinese food in centenary'.

Other choices are available, but I didn't feel like soup or anything. The Peking duck (49) was not bad, though they didn't do a good job of cleaning the fat off the skin (which proper Peking duck is supposed to have), and the duck wasn't all that flavorful - maybe cause the sauce and green onions didn't taste right. The dish is really made for about 10 people as part of a family-style dinner, so I possibly just had a bit too much of the same flavor, but I thought the Peking duck was just mediocre. I've had much better lettuce wraps before, and don't think I'll be returning to Yum Yum, even though it may be the best for Peking duck in Brissy. It didn't live up to my expectations, and just got me craving for Great China's peking duck. Theirs is good enough that I'll put up with their unfriendly and inattentive service just to get some of their duck (and crab and buns)! Ah, I miss good Chinese food...

The little restaurant is a bit tiny inside, and echoey as I found out, so we did spend most of the time not focussing on our food, but on the conversation on the next table. Hey, it's not like we interruped him, we were the only other people in there! The next time we did focus on the food, and while the peking duck this restaurant boasts is pretty yummy (3.5/5 i'm a bit of a peking duck nazi) there are other dishes which compliment that style as well. Plus, you can come in and buy some BBQ meats hanging in the front display window for take away, you just tell them how much, they chop it up and off you go. The dry beef ho fan is quite delicious and packed full of flavour, and I really did love their roast pork and tofu hot pot. Both are tasty and leave you wanting more. I know that a lot of places have given this place raving reviews, evidence of the newspaper and magazine articles are cut out and sticky taped to the front door. I know that people like Bernie from Powderfinger even go there. But i've been to my fair share of chinese tucker places, and while this place has been highly rated, I can't say it's made my top 5. Go there for the duck and a few select dishes, you won't be disappointed. But make no mistake... this place is famous for it's duck... not it's dishes.

Conscious of the fact that I needed to eat something before my stomach began to munch on my already struggling liver, I ran into the first place I saw: Yuet Wah. Now, I normally hate ordering takeout for one because you always end up with too much rice and too much of one particular meal. On occasion I have compensated for this by buying two different meals with the intention of saving some for leftovers - only to find myself 30 minutes later with peking sauce all over my face and shirt with not a morsel left. My binge eating problem aside, Yuet Wah has an excellent range of solo diner options that includes both rice and a reasonable serving of a particular meal. Being the stinge I am I was ecstatic when I discovered that I was able to receive all of this for less then $10!! As I waited for my meal I began to check the rest of restaurant out. The dining area was a little uninspired but perfectly practical. There were tables, chairs and wine buckets, but that was pretty much it. I began to wonder what this place was before it was a restaurant that seems to offer meals from every single country in Asia. It quite clearly used to be a house. What type of people used to live in a house that is now a takeaway restaurant? The point I'm getting at is that the atmosphere wasn't convincing and seemed induce bouts of nostalgia. When I returned home I quickly ate my Mongolian Lamb with rice on my bed watching some documentary hosted by Oprah about the holocaust. As you can tell it wasn't the best evening ever but it may have had very little to do with my trip to Yuet Wah. The food was decent but it isn't something you'd write home about. Regardless I licked the takeaway container clean and went to bed.
