Szechuan Cold Noodles blew me away with perfect texture and taste and the mouth tingly heat that sneaks up on you. They were garnished with chives and there was plenty of chili oil for a thorough coating. Also tried the Boiled Beef with Sichuan Pepper & Leek. Nice and tender, very flavorful, slivered garlic and cilantro were in the mix. You like it spicy? This one's eye-watering. It was great. That little hot pepper symbol on the menu has meaning! They also serve the Americanized favorites, for less adventuresome palates. Very cute and cozy inside. Small. I believe there were six booths, with table service. I saw an older Chinese man making dumplings by hand at a side table. The lady who was waiting tables also took care of me, very sweet and friendly. I hope to get back here for dine in before long.

Wow I can't believe I never reviewed this place! There aren't very many places in Cincinnati that…read morehave traditional Chinese food. This place has it. And I'm not talking about fancy dishes or street food, but right in between. While other 'real' Chinese restaurants around the area cover the whole gambit of food, Wok Express keeps their focus on the middle portion and they do it right. This is the place you go to if you're craving that meal that you can get for cheap, in a huge portion, at a little stand on the street at night market, and you're sitting on a little plastic chair and a wobbly metal table. The decor here is obviously much better than that though. Wok Express tricks you with their Americanized name, and while they do serve Americanized Chinese food, just like House of Sun, they've got a separate menu and that's where the gold is. I come here for the Beef Noodle soup only. I'm too satisfied with that to try anything else, and given that it's $5 or $6, for a bowl of noodles big enough to feed two, why would I even bother?

Yum, Yum, YUM! Unpretentious...inexpensive...YUM! Hurry and come on over!…read more Yes, these are the best words I can come up with for Wok Express' Taiwanese style cuisine. After two days, I'm still reminiscing those flavors: homey, familiar, yet impossible to reproduce at home. We ordered quite a few dishes: Mixed cold appetizer plate with pig ear slices; Quarter cold duck with ginger and sauce; Twice cooked pork belly slices, "Chinese" style; Salt n pepper fried chicken wings, bite sized Stir fry beef with jalapeño peppers; Chitterlings with fish slices in flaming hot pot. (I thought I had written chitterlings out of my list long time ago, but I could not stop eating it! ) EVERY single dish was delicious and non-gringoed. It has been quite a while since something has excited this tired palate of mine. Wok Express has a very low key exterior and even lower key interior: worn tables and more worn booths. The owner's service style is no-nonsense: "are you ready to order...here are your food..." But who cares when the food is this good! I am already wanting to go back for more!

The pickup was easy and the woman who helped me get my food was very nice and efficient. Parking was easy too with their large parking lot in the plaza. I ordered traditional chicken low mein, wonton soup, and gyoza. The lo mein was a really big portion which I love. The soup came in a nice container and didn't spill. The gyoza were packaged in a very small container but they were easy enough to eat. The food was the biggest problem that my boss and I had with the establishment. While it was hot and ready to eat, it unfortunately didn't taste like much else than the styrofoam packing that it came in. The lo mein had very little flavor. I will say it was cooked well and the noodles weren't overcooked. The wonton soup was nothing to go on about, and the wontons were a bit slimy. The best part was the gyoza, but again nothing exceptional with that dish. Maybe ordering in-house provides better food.

The restaurant could really use a good deep cleaning and a little more attention overall. We arrived about 40 minutes before their afternoon closure, and the welcome wasn't exactly warm. The chicken and shrimp were tough and hard to chew, and the rice tasted reheated. The jalapeño tempura was very good and definitely the highlight of the meal. The crab rangoons had good flavor and a nice crunch, but they were extremely greasy, very sweet, and had very little filling. There's potential here, but right now, they have some work to do. A little more pride in the cleanliness, food preparation, and overall customer experience could make a big difference.
