Food standard varies depending on how busy they are when it's rushed and undercooked. I have also had large pieces of egg shell in my egg fried rice. This is not somewhere I would recommend.

Here's a list of good and bad factors about it - I'll leave you to decide which are which. - They are open seven days a week. Unlike most other chip shops, this means Sundays. - The portions from the fish counter are huge. We will often buy a medium bag of chips and find that it feeds two quite adequately. - The Chinese side is very quick to prepare the food, but tends to be quite greasy. - Similarly, anything cooked in batter on the fish counter will be dripping with grease... - ...and the chips tend to be cut thick, so there's rarely many crunchy ones in a bag. It tends to be busy, but people are generally served very quickly. It's well worth telephoning to place an order if you're going during peak times (5:30-7pm most nights, especially Fridays). Newbury has many other good Chinese takeaways which are worth investigating. I've struggled to find a truly outstanding chip shop in town though; although the two branches of The Plaice are alright, local consensus is that the Howan is better. Don't make an effort to go out of your way to get here, but if you're close by it'll hit the spot.

Always welcoming, with attentive service and a varied menu with both chinese and thai dishes to choose from. I don't think the prices are any more expensive than any other Chinese restaurant - but even if they are, the quality of the food at the Jade would certainly justify it. The peking and thai feast is particularly popular and great value if there's a group of you - three courses including an excellent selection of hors d'oeuvres, crispy duck, and a selection of main courses for under 20 quid a head - and believe me, there's plenty of food for your money! Special occasions such as christmas and new year are brilliant fun at the Jade as Frankie, the owner, will put on the karaoke system (although as everywhere the price goes up a little on those nights). I don't have a bad word to say really - it's the best chinese restaurant i've ever been to, anywhere. And they own the takeaway next door, Kings, which serves the same outstanding grub for you to enjoy at home. Not sure what else I can say, apart from give them a bell and book a table - you won't regret it and you'll return again and again!
