For someone with a particular liking for Asian foods I was delighted to see a place dedicated to Chinese dumplings (dim sims) and buns of all kinds. Bronca Arcade, where this shop is located in, already has a bit of a Asian street food mile feel due to its narrowness, darkness and oldish character. However I got disappointed that the pork dumplings are quite bland, so much so that not even the supplied chilli could make that better. I learnt you can't improve an average dumpling by adding chilli to it (how could I even think that?). The texture is quite soft, an indication to the types of ingredients and that they might have been sitting there for a while. When it comes to Chinese cuisine freshness is of utmost importance.
When you're used to the kind of fine dumplings you get at Din Tai Fung or many of those places in Hong Kong and Guangzhou, you might get critical to dumplings - which is a good thing.
I also tried a BBQ bun, but that also wasn't a pleaser. Too sweet and too dry was the meat.
Ah well, I had to try it.
You'll see stacks of bamboo steamers and plastic take away containers at the front selling a range of dumplings, but am I game enough to try it again? Three dumplings and a bun sets you back $7.
