Locally owned restaurant that provides our favorite Chinese food in town. Owners are super nice. Servers are friendly. Buffet has a nice variety. Newly remodeled. Looks nice. We order take out here often and dine in occasionally. Love the food, the location, and the environment. I like that I can order the spicy dishes at half spice (so this Midwesterner can handle it! lol). Still our favorite Chinese food in the cove! Even though the buffet is small (11am-2pm tue, wed, thurs, fri, sun) it is quite good and well priced. You can also get a soup with your buffet at no extra charge. Even though there has been a price increase you can still get a lot of food for less cost then other places in Hampton Cove. read more

Really there were only 2 positives- the server was good and the soup was okay. I went with a friend. As noted her hot and sour soup and my egg drop was fine. She said her egg roll was ok. I can't speak about her chicken entree- it looked ok but she said the chicken was "iffy". Note- when she asked the server about the dish before she ordered, the server said it was "hit or miss". Not really a ringing endorsement. I ordered moo shu pork and it was dreadful. Basically a plate of steamed cabbage with a few strips of dry pork. The sauce was tasteless. China Cook offers your typical New York style Chinese takeout style food. The food is nothing special, I guess mediocre sums it up best. For me, a good starting point at these New York Style takeout places is their lo mein. This was just mediocre. Food should not only sustain you, but should be a celebration. Pretty standard Chinese to-go. Efficient on-line ordering and pickup . Food nothing special but had been consistently passable, had ordered here a half dozen times and been satisfied. My wife recently ordered the chicken lo mein. She could scarcely find ANY chicken. I searched, and did find some finely chopped pieces of chicken in the bottom of the container. My wife returned the mostly uneaten container the next day. She was told "people like you don't understand...". Sorry, my wife has been eating Lo Mein from Texas to Maine, I think she understands when the dish is skimpy. A disappointing foodie experience for us. Chinese food is one that we've eating in NY, SF and even China so we tend to have a basic threshold in which to judge. Nice people but somehow they can't seem to get this right. My wife and I had a craving for Chinese food and we didn't want to go far. We found China Cook in Owens Cross Roads and decided to give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised. It's a small place, but nicely decorated and clean. The service was excellent and the food was fantastic. For about $10, I was given a nice helping of fried shrimp, chicken fried rice and a vegetable egg roll. Everything was served quickly; it was all hot and delicious. We were informed they have a lunch buffet daily until 2pm. Needless to say, I will be back. Thank you for an excellent experience! read more

What a cute little restaurant! After camping at Monte Sano, we stopped in on our way home. There was a buffet, which was fresh and kept full. Service was very friendly and there was Christian music playing overhead(which was odd, but to each their own). The family was very happy with the buffet selections. Deserves 0 stars. Chow mein is a soupy mess of veggies and NO NOODLES. "Mein" literally means noodle. WTF??! For those of you who don't know, chow mein is traditionally served as a stir fried noodle dish. Lo mein is a tossed noodle dish. BOTH should be served with noodles. China cook disagrees, apparently, which is bizarre. Also, the beef sticks were undercooked. Total waste of money. Solid choice for Chinese takeout in the Owens Cross Roads / Hampton Cove area. Highly recommend the sweet and sour dishes. We usually get the chicken, which is white meat and always cooked to perfection. Also have had good luck the various lo mein dishes and the fried rice. The prices are fairly reasonable for the quality. We order from here regularly and the food quality is very consistent as well. read more

If you live in HC, OCR, or are just in the area, this is the place to go!! I will likely have withdrawls when we move away :-) Yes, most items are more Americanized, but that is to be expected & im not sure if my kids would eat quite as much if it was the more authentic chinese I have had in Chicago, San Fran, LA, etc...although if you ask, the owners WILL make you more authentic dishes upon request, you can ask them to surprise you or you can tell them what types of food you like & they will hook you up!!! Several menu items are more authentic than others(like who orders gen tso & expects authentic...really???? General Tso may be a person from China, but his chicken definitely isn't!!!) I will say that the weekday chef is far superior to the weekend chef for what we order! Some folks may prefer the weekend chef(less sauce on food, less spice, to us just over all more bland) We love the pork fried rice, pork or chicken with vegetables, sugar donut, gen tso extra spicy(weekend chef adds no spice no matter how it is ordered-still good, just not what we want on the weekend it tastes more like sesame with no seeds, good thing we like that too ;-)), hot & spicy chicken, black pepper chicken, sesame chicken, spare ribs(pork in the roast pork dishes is similar to the ribs-same yummy red goodness!!), lo mein(weekend chef sends us home with dry noodles, during the week they are amazing!!), hot & sour soup(I order this almost daily during allergy season), egg foo young is pretty great as well, but contain peas that we order without...gravy is dark & thick as it should be!!! Special requests are always accomodated...2 of my daughters are allergic to green peas...but not snow peas or any other veggie-crazy, i know. Original review: Moved to the area 3 weeks ago and have dined out daily, with every restaurant exceling, until this one. Worst Chinese food I've ever had. Now I'm on a mission to find good Chinese in Huntsville. Small, cozy place, but buffet area is sub-par and unimpressive. No soup on the buffet. Dumplings were so hard that I could've used them as a hammer. Spring rolls were clearly frozen. Tried everything on the buffet, and everything tasted the same. Chicken, beef, pork... all poorly made and I couldn't eat it. The only thing I could eat was the Mongolian pork, and the best I can say about it was "it was the best of the worst", and that was overly greasy and burnt tasting. Cheap eats, but bad eats. This was our first time dining from China Cook. Very unimpressed. Everything was lackluster. The Moo Shu pancakes were unappetizing and the garlic sauce for the steamed chicken tasted like chlorine. Super hit and miss. Lunch buffet has always been very good. To go dishes are 50/50. Stay away from the lo mein. The hunan pork was served with roasted pork like you get in fried rice instead of wok cooked pork. If you find something good, stick with it otherwise it can be very disappointing. This is our local Chinese food restaurant. It is nestled in between the Publix and Subway in the Hampton Cove center. The best deal is the dinner for two or three. Soup, rice, two small egg rolls, two (or three) entrees. They do a good fried rice, hot and sour soup, Shrimp Lo Mein and Mongolian Beef. The staff is very friendly and fast. They do have a buffet open at lunch hours, so if you are in Hampton Cove area at lunchtime you can get a larger sample of the food. They are closed on Mondays. read more

If you are on this side of Green Mountain and Monte Sano, this is where you will go for your Chinese food fix. Service is good and the people are friendly. I would not call the food OUTSTANDING, but I always enjoy it and they have all the normal items and one of my favorites, Mei Fun, which several of the places around here don't have.
