I don't typically like buffets, and this one isn't much of an exception. The people were very friendly and the restaurant seemed clean, but it's pretty new. There was a lot of variety on the buffet, but I really can't say I loved any of it. They were numerous chicken dishes and only one beef dish. Lots of desserts. And they didn't seem to bring fresh food out pretty regularly. But it was kind of all the typical Chinese buffet selections. If you go in the back of these buffets, you will find large cans of the same kinds of syrup and ingredients. Even though the front staff are Chinese, the food does not at all resemble Chinese, Hong Kong, or Taiwanese food. Practically the only authentic thing here were the dumplings. I judge a buffet not alongside a fancy order-from-the-menu place, but alongside other buffets. This buffet is one of my favorites in the entire state. Such variety! Everything tastes fresh. Lots of flavors. My "best of show" were the General Tsao's Chicken, the fried shrimp, the coconut shrimp, and the veggie lo mien. The crab Rangoon and the garlic green beans were honorable mentions. The pork egg roll was a bit odd - the flavor was good, but because it was sitting and steaming, the outside was mushy and chewy instead of being crunchy. The sushi is good, but high on the rice-to-fish ratio... but I'd do the same thing if I was running a buffet. The only thing I had that was a real miss was the sesame chicken, which may have been sitting too long as it was really tough/chewy and I had to let it go. My kids LOVE the sweet and sour chicken. The watermelon was super fresh and sweet and crisp. The dumplings were pretty solid - my kids liked them more than I did. The service is always pleasant as well, fun and helpful with frequent water and tea refills as needed. One qualm - all four of us had minor digestive issues after the visit. Possibly the saltiness of the food, or the oil used to cook it, or some other unrelated cause, but it won't discourage me from coming back in the future. read more

Very wide selection of food that is kept stocked and very tasty! They off menu service however we're huge fans of the buffet and have not tried it yet. Maybe one day but it's just too hard to settle on just one dish when they have such a wide variety. The staff is attentive and friendly. They offer tables or booths, just let them know what you want. Very accommodating Unlike other restaurants in the area, they don't seem to mind if you only want water to drink (and it tastes good). Parking is in the back and can fill up during lunch. We have been eating there for years but the last time we ate there the food and the service were terrible. We make a fun event out of it by riding our bikes 100 miles each way to have lunch there on special occasions for us. We always order shrimp egg foo yong from the lunch menu. Typically the plate is totally full with delicious egg patties chock-full of shrimp. We get wonton soup with rice crackers. And fried rice. we normally make three or four meals out of each plate. This time we got undercooked tiny patties that were full of green things instead of shrimp and about a cup of fried rice that looked and tasted like it's been defrosted from a frozen TV dinner, and when they ran out of rice crackers, Which tasted stale nobody bothered to refill them, even after we asked. The meal was served all at once, including the soup instead of the soup first. Even the fortune cookies were stale. And nobody cared even when we politely asked questions about why things were different. We will not be back. read more

I ordered take out cashew chicken. It was absolutely horrible! It was so dry it came out all together in 1 big clump.

They dangerously allow for cross-contamination to happen, a friend had a dangerous allergic reaction because of it. I've recently heard that they pulled a take-out container out of the garbage someone threw away (due to a hole being in it) and put it back on their stack of containers for someone else to use!! Someone witnessed it and posted it on social media. This was during the day, with a full diner. Imagine what they do behind the scenes... If you have food allergies or a weakened immune system, this buffet could be dangerous. From working in the food industry in this area, i know inspectors are negligent and many diners that should be shut down, are not. Buyer beware. It's such a shame, their hot and sour soup wasn't that bad. But for safety reasons I recommend the chinese restaraunt in Oscoda. read more

As one reviewer said, nothing beats a freshly cooked meal, but there are times when something quick with a lot of variety can't be beat. Totally agree. If you want the finest meal in town with the freshest ingredients, go to Hsing's Garden. (I'm writing this during the Covid-19 pandemic and I believe both restaurants are closed temporarily.) If you can't decide what you want and have a family of different ages and tastes, as well as a smaller budget, the China Garden buffet is ideal. (They do have a menu you can order from, but we never have.) Offerings include sushi (Japanese), Chinese and Continental cuisine, and dessert. Parking is lousy - mainly because of an awkward layout - they take all major credit cards and stay open pretty late. They get tremendously busy in the summer when tourists hit the town. As someone who has had "real" Asian food of all kinds, this food is about as Americanized as it gets. If you don't like Asian food because it's too exotic, you will be happy here. Everything is tailored to an American customer, not just the continental fare like french fries and fried chicken. Their pork ribs aren't the traditional style spareribs with the sweet, red sauce - it's more of a Memphis style bbq sauce. They have stuffed mushrooms and crab salad, fried shrimp, many other dishes that could easily please a simple palate. If you're trying to eat healthier, there is always a nicely steamed whole salmon fillet. Pair that with sushi or steamed white rice and their fresh, sauteed green beans that are brightly colored and crisp, and you're good to go. If you find something you like on the buffet you can expect it to be there forever - they don't change the offerings often. But, that's good if you have favorites you rely on. Each dish tastes the same every single time, which we really appreciate. It's hard to find consistency in restaurants here. The sushi is freshly prepared right there, but it isn't like an authentic Japanese sushi bar. Those sushi chefs train for years and the ingredients are impeccable, but, the price of that sushi is much higher. With the buffet, the sushi is all included. To go, it's 50 cents each piece plus the to-go price for the buffet. This is perfectly adequate if you're craving sushi - there's nowhere else in town to get it. They have a small variety at any given time, but you can ask if they don't have what you want or are running out. The rice isn't seasoned at all, which is a real down downside. (Normally sushi rice has rice wine vinegar and sugar in it.) The quality of the ingredients is fine, just not exceptional. The food is all prepared well, just not as authentic as we like. The dumplings are full of meat, the ribs are big and fairly lean, nothing is skimpy - there is plenty of food at the buffet. For this town, it's perfect and their business model is smart as can be. Now. Regarding the reviewer who said the staff speak to each other in their native language loudly and only speak English to you when they bring you the bill. Disgusting comment. Pure racism. They speak to you as needed - English is their second language, big deal. It's not easy for some to learn a second language and some people are embarrassed or shy because they think they can't speak it well enough. Of course they speak to each other in Chinese. Loudly?? Utter nonsense. The staff is highly efficient and always busy. They refill soft drinks quickly without being asked and keep everything on your table clean. They will do anything to make you happy and they take great pride in what they do. My husband and I were seated for the buffet and he asked the server if they ever had fried fish on the buffet. She brought the manager who said if he wanted fish he would have it made right away. He came back minutes later with a large plate piled high with piping hot, lightly battered, crispy chunks of fish. We couldn't believe it. The manager said anytime we wanted fish to just ask for it and they'd make it. We went there yesterday and they must not have changed the grease in the fryers as the fried zucchini was so greasy and brown that it coated your tongue, yuck, same thing with the squid. It was dinner prices too and maybe, we thought, there would be some different items on the buffet but same old stuff. I think that will be the last visit to that place as there is a much nicer Chinese restaurant just up the street! Use new grease people! It's not appetizing! :( read more

I was so hesitant to go to this place when my husband said he wanted Chinese. I've never really had a good experiences at chinese buffets but this one blew me away. First of all the food was fresh and hot! Secondly the service was on spot, the waitress was very attentive we couldn't say thank you enough, lastly the place is so clean!!!! I was up here on business and had little time for lunch. Thought buffet would be quickest dining option. Curb appeal is terrible. Inside is big, clean and bright. Nice decor. Bathrooms are filthy. Borderline disgusting. Not sure what they ignore bathrooms. Service: most do not speak English. Lots of them walking around. Just milling around, not really bussing tables or anything. You only get one napkin. Ask for more and you get a few of those very thin Coney Island type napkins. Place is pretty full. Enough turnover on buffet to make the food safe to eat. Food. Huge selection. Not all Chinese. They have everything from sushi to mac and cheese. Salad and dessert bar too. Almost everything is heavily breaded, fried and in a thick heavy sauce. 2 soups; Tried the hot and sour. It was thick starch, and completely flavorless. Egg rolls are not really edible. Not very much filling and little there is, is mostly meat and something mushy I could not identify. Many chicken dishes: all in heavy sauce (most all very sweet) but I am not sure it's chicken. Some were small cubes of something with the texture of pork. Maybe it was chicken. Several fish dishes, but smelled fishy. Did not want to risk trying. The broccoli beef dish was actually tasty and the beef tender. Sweet & Sour chicken has sauce on side. I like that. But the chicken balls were 80% breading. I'm not kidding. It was a hunt for the meat. The one dish labeled 'spicy' was not. Only food items I handled with my fingers were fried won ton and egg rolls. Despite washing my hands twice, my fingers smelled of fish. I did not touch fish. Suspect fried in old oil that also fried fish. Pretty gross. In terms of quality of food, pretty low. In terms of flavor, not authentic at all. This is basically Chinese inspired/themed slop buffet. Probably great if you just want to eat a lot for cheap. Will never be back. read more

CLEAN AND OUTSTANDING FOOD!!! My husband and I were visiting Tawas for the first time and we stumbled upon this gem. We were leery about trying a Chinese buffet but we decided to try this place. I'm glad we did!!! The selection of food is unmatched. This is the cleanest buffet I've ever been to. For $10 a person for dinner, we couldn't beat the price. All in all, the food was fresh and hot. Many recommended this place for the selection and price. Immediately after eating I was in the bathroom of the resturaunt getting sick while my family waited in the car. My husband complained of nausea. An hour later my 12 year old was sick. We took him to the ER at 3:30am when he began having trouble breathing (I never knew that was a symptom of food poisoning!) St. Joseph's ER said we were not the first to experience food poisoning from the China Buffet. I have went twice since we arrived from California and both time were very different than last year. all the food was cold, bad smell when we first walked in and one man server instead of the a staff of women servers. you can tell that this buffet in well on it's way down. lunch was $8.22 if you drink water. The door from the outside going into the kitchen was so gross. It was black from dirty hands. felt sick after eating yesterday. really wanted this place to make it but it doesn't look good. this area is really pressed for good eating places. read more
