Was on vacation in Wisconsin and itching for Chinese food.... Pulled up Yelp and found China 1. Placed my order and then headed out to pick it up. Food was delicious and huge portions. Steaming hot! My order had plates, napkins and plastic utensils which was greatly appreciated since we were staying at a local hotel. I ate dinner that evening, breakfast the next day (because egg foo young makes for a great breakfast!) and lunch the following day....Huge portions! We're here for a few days and had a taste for Chinese food. Read the great reviews so decided to try it. Wow! Delish. Ordered the shrimp egg rolls, they are ok. Steamed dumplings, great. But wow the Mongolian beef was awesome. Great flavor and a hint of spiciness that we don't normally get from that dish. Ordered to go, 20 minutes, they were very friendly. We were so hungry after playing a round of golf and all seemed to agree on China 1. It was a great choice!! The Egg Rolls and Crab Rangoon was soooo good and hot too! China 1 is a cute little place where the food is always fresh. Everything they cook is great. We usually order the General Tso's Three Favorite. It has Roasted Jumbo shrimp, scallops, sautéed chicken with Broccoli, and Rice comes on the side. The Pot stickers and shrimp egg rolls are the best around. The Low Mein is a must as well. Julie the owner is so sweet, and a very hard worker she always greets us with a smile. We mostly do pick up orders, and when we get home our order is always correct , piping hot, and cooked to perfection. Sometimes we order off of the lunch menu, and pick up our order by 3 pm (lunch is over by 3) for an early dinner Portions seem the same, and it includes soup and an egg roll. I have no idea why this place took almost 2.5 hours to be ready for pick up when they said 30 mins. They also make you pay first then you're sitting there waiting. There is NO system at all and it's absolutely ridiculous. Now for the food...when we got home though the food was cold. Everything was flavorful and tasty but that wait was ridiculous. First timers to this restaurant. They were crazy busy so maybe that is why the food was awful. Two soups both bland. Egg drop, I added soy sauce and some green onions and made it decent and chicken rice was just bad. Happy family stated it's had scallops chicken and shrimp. All I could find was breaded chicken and it was hard and chewy Egg rolls were burnt on one end. How can that even happen? Flavor was just off. A standard Chinese takeout place. I'm not sure if they deliver but we didn't have to wait long and they were very busy at 1:00pm. I was very impressed with the lady at the counter who could handle all those customers at once and the kitchen staff to cook all that and serve the dining room! The place was packed! We ordered the meal for two, which was sweet and sour pork or chicken, beef and veggies, two crab Rangoon, two fried shrimp, two teriyaki beef on stick, two small containers or fried or regular rice, two egg rolls, and two cups choice of soup. Skip the cheap fast food and get some of this delicious Chinese cuisine! Stopped here on the way through. The service was great, very kind and accommodating people. I asked if they had coffee. The lady said yes (although there was none ready as it was early evening - I had a ways to go yet). She made fresh coffee and it was one of the best cups! I ordered the cashew chicken. It was honestly one of the top 2 I've had, and I am a cashew chicken fanatic! Fresh, crunchy veggies, tender chicken. The location is perfect and very accessible. We were in the area and the mood for Chinese. Our first and only time here was about a month ago. We were greeted at the register by a young boy that couldn't have been much older than nine. The wait time was just fine, and the food was about average for fast Chinese. We noticed the lack of cleanliness. They would let dirty tables sit uncleaned so when new guests would arrive, there was a lack of places to sit. I also noticed the bathrooms were below my expectations. 10 years ago I wrote a glowing review for this place. I'd stop in between Milwaukee and Rockford and I swore this place was the best. Grandma passed away and so did my reason for going to China 1 from Milwaukee. I tried it out, again, in a wayward trip down I-43. I'm glad to say it's still the best in the state, and a true gem. The place was super busy, which is initially a good sign when trying a new restaurant. I went in and placed my order, the cashier was rude and unfriendly but i dismissed it to the fact it was busy. She told me my food was going to be ready in 20 minutes which was great, ok. I come back 20 minutes later and it's still just as busy and I'm waiting watching the kitchen work really hard and they seem understaffed. I finally get my food AN HOUR LATER!!! I was trying really hard not to be bothered because I could see how hard the kitchen was working. I wouldn't have even been upset about an hour wait, but it was just the fact that the women who took my order was so unfriendly and didn't give me an even remotely close wait time!! BEST Crab Rangoon and sweet 'n' sour sauce I've ever had! Definitely homemade. We had some really solid egg rolls too (my husband liked the shrimp, I liked the ground beef). We stopped in here late at night for a snack on our roundabout way home from a long day in Chicago. It was just what we needed for the final push home, and we are definitely coming back for more.
