We went rafting with these guys this past weekend and everything was great. Especially the staff. They had a great sense of humour but were definitely serious when safety is in question. We had such a blast down the Canyon rafting tour and it was great for first timers and experienced rafters alike since we were a mix of both and we all enjoyed the trip thoroughly. For $85 (when you have 7-14 ppl in the group), you get all your equipment, a 3-hour-long rafting trip, and lunch included! It was definitely a good deal. I think I just became addicted to river rafting and will have to come back.

Absolutely Phenomenal!!!! I hosted a group of 36 people at Chilliwack River Rafting this past weekend and we had the best time! The staff and owners were extremely accommodating and wonderful. The river guides were hilarious and so much fun (especially in the bright and tight costumes). Our group had so much fun and are still messaging me about it saying we have to do it again. Our tour guide Will was great! He guided us really well and knew I felt scared and hesitant but made me feel at ease and like he was there every step of the way. We camped for two nights and rafted Saturday morning, we had an impromptu talent night on Saturday night which was such a hoot!!! I cannot wait to go back!!!

So exciting that you have to try it out at least once. But once you try it, you'll be hooked. I've done this 3 times, and it's just really really fun, and it's a relatively cheap fun way to spend a weekend day. People from over the world come here to river raft, because we apparently have some of the higher class rivers?! Arrange a group of 7 or more, and you can get a group rate. There's a simple lunch included as well, and a guide with accompany you on the 3 hour trip. There's 2 levels- beginner and experienced. They're both fun, for if you've never done any water sports before, you should definitely do the beginner one. Or for the adventurous types, do the experienced level one, it's SUPER exciting!!! Call ahead for reservations, and it can get quite full in the summer weekends, so call in advance, and a fun day will be guaranteed!!

Anyone thinking to raft with Paul Engel and Wild and Scenic River Tours should know that two…read morepeople, a father and his ten year old son, died on a trip with him in June of 2022. The trip was led by Paul with Alex as his assistant. It was a family of 4, the raft flipped and the father and son died and the mother and daughter survived. Many aspects of that rafting trip raise very serious questions about how things were handled before, during and after the accident by Paul and Alex. The local authorities should have looked into it more carefully than they did. It was a tragedy that should not have happened and a very strong argument can be made that it was not just a freak accident or bad luck.

We arrived at Wild and Scenic River Tours on June 23rd, 15 minutes early to have time ask a couple…read morequestions about taking my cell phone, sun block, water availability on the boat, and the kind of wetsuit we'd have (not clear from the website). Paul was one of the guides. After greetings were exchanged, I started by asking about taking my cell phone. He said the boat had a waterproof box for the phone. He demanded: "Get out all your questions at once." After each question (of about 3) he said, "Next." Or "Is that it?" After we got into our gear and the rafts were loaded, I said to Paul that I'd like to put my cell phone into the waterproof box. Paul answered sarcastically, "I didn't get the memo. I didn't bring it. With all the questions [three!] I didn't know you wanted it." He blamed ME that the waterproof box he'd said was there, was now NOT there. "You can put it in the cooler." Ok. When we arrived at the entrance to the Nooksack River, our second guide, Alex, gave us a detailed safety overview. There was another family of three on the raft trip. After the safety explanation, we all grabbed a side rope and helped carry the raft down a flight of stairs to the riverbank. I was on the left, same side as the river. When we stopped at a point still several yards above the river itself, Paul said, "Ok, we're going to carry this down to put it into the river." There were two possible routes, one next to me and one several yards further." I started to ask, "So we take the boat down here or . . . " Before I even finished the question, Paul pushed me aside and grabbed the rope from my hands, cutting me off. "Or I can just pick up this side and carry it down!" I was stunned at his disrespect! Without even glancing back, he marched with my group toward the section further on. The oars were sticking out of the back of the raft at an angle. The left one smashed into me, shoving me over the rocks toward the river. Pure luck, there was a flat rock I landed on and a tree that stopped my fall. Otherwise, I would have tumbled over the rocks! He never looked back. I decided not to say anything right then as Paul was clearly acting like a mentally unbalanced person. I also didn't want to put a damper on the event for the other family. The trip would have been fun except Paul's crazy, offensive behavior ruined the experience. After we finished lunch, and it was all packed up, instead of leaving, we just hung around there for at least an extra half hour that we could have been paddling. Paul was blabbing to the other family about Mt. Baker snow. When we finally got going, I figured we had at least another 45 minutes of paddling Instead, after about 15 minutes we pulled into shore and were done! I think we total paddled no more than 90 minutes. We pulled the boat out of the water. He said we'd all lift the raft onto our heads and carry it up. I started to ask how to hoist the raft, got out about 2 words, and Paul shouted at me: "Stop talking!" What the heck is wrong with this guy? Does he have a personality disorder? I've interacted with guides from all over the world. I have never encountered such rudeness and disrespect for those in his care as I experienced with Paul. The river rafting would have been fun with a normal human being, but not with some weirdo with a chip on his shoulder. You will like the rafting as long as you don't ask any questions--and watch out for those oars. Paul won't be watching.

The time availability, Golden Hour Tour discount, and Anacortes departure allowed us to narrow our decision. We were very pleased with our three our tour. However, it did not seem like it would work well for beginners as basic skills were needed to paddle and navigate. I never quite got comfortable with the peddles for turning and would have had them a little lower as my feet slipped off a couple times. I could not bend my knees enough to reconnect the peddles for turning on my own. Our guide assisted me which held up the tour though. We were in a tandem which worked well for us as my husband was recovering from surgery. We were covered with a skirt to keep us dry for the most part. Some water did leech in to wet our bathing suit bottoms so we were glad we brought a dry change of clothes at the end. We saw eagles, seals, jumping fish, and other birds. Whales do not come in this close to the main land so we had no expectation. The water was like glass in parts, slightly turbulent in others, and the island shores simply serene. If you stuck close to the guide, he was very knowledgeable.

We took the night bioluminescence tour with Anacortes Kayaks. These tours are promoted as "no…read morekayaking experience is necessary." We were a group of 11 women with an average age of 70 and everyone had been in a kayak before, but most of us would be considered novices. There were a total of 26 customers on our tour with only 3 guides. As the staff rushed to get 26 people into kayaks and out on the water, one of our group did not have the spray skirt attached all the way around and once we launched she was quickly soaked. She was also given a paddle with no drip rings, which made it worse. These are equipment issues that the staff should have caught and corrected. The lead guide was giving safety instructions when we were all already out on the water and most of us could not hear him; we had to ask a guide who was nearer "what did he say?" Once we set out, the group quickly split, with the lead setting a pace that many of us found impossible to keep up with. I am not sure why we were rushing to get to a point where we would just float and watch the sunset waiting for it to get dark. We could have taken a slower pace and accomplished the same thing while also keeping the group together. We did not have a problem with the distance, it was the pace that was being set that was an issue. In addition, three of our group were put into a 3-seat kayak and we have since read "using a triple kayak in the sea as a novice requires extreme caution." We had never been in a kayak with that sort of rudder system or in a kayak with 3 seats; paddling and maneuvering it was difficult. The bioluminescence was amazing, but the guides offered very little in terms of a narrative about the area or what we were seeing.....or if they did, we could not hear it. On the way back to the marina in the dark, we all had glow sticks around our necks and were told to follow the lead guide who had a blue one. Fairly quickly, the front group had gotten so far ahead that we could no longer see them at all. We had been told to stay close to shore, but we started hitting rocks and the guide that was behind our group bringing up the rear called out for us to move away from shore. We called back "we have no one to follow!" Imagine paddling in the dark and trying to set your own course. Finally the guide who was still with us moved to the front and paddled slowly so the group could follow her, but I am fairly sure that meant there was no guide behind us to monitor the group from the back. It was hard to tell where the guides were since there was so little communication. What could have been a pleasant paddling experience felt like a struggle and detracted from the whole tour. There should have been at least 4 guides so the group could have been split in two, with a guide in front and in back of each group, or an effort should have been made to keep everyone together. As it was, we did not feel safe, particularly trying to make it back to the marina in the dark. Unfortunately, I would not recommend this tour unless you are a very experienced kayaker. EDIT: We were part of a GROUP of slower kayaks. We were not a lone kayak unable to keep up "with the rest of the group" as the company response implies. We were not the last to arrive back at the marina nor were we the last kayak for most of the evening. WE were not "the main problem."
