Great food, lousy chips. How can a Mexican restaurant that serves such good food, serve such lousy chips? They were not the hot, light and crispy corn chips that you expect to be served with salsa, quickly after being seated, while waiting for the beverage of choice. Thankful I don't go to a good Mexican restaurant for the chips. I ordered the grilled pollo con salsa verde, and could have licked the plate clean! Absolutely delicious entrée. My wife and I were visiting from out of state and looking to eat some good mexican food. Looked to yelp for advice as to where to eat. The parking lot was packed upon arriving however-we had like a five minute wait to be seated which i was shocked we could get a table that fast. My wife and I were promply greeted by our waiter-menus and drink order taken immediately. Fresh warm chips and flavorful salsa delivered with our beverages. A very short wait and our meals came. Portions were not skimpy and the food was very hot, fresh and flavorful. Our waiter and rest of the staff very attentive and friendly. Should we ever return Mt. Arrived in Mt. Airy on Easter Sunday at approximately 7:15 PM. Almost nothing open, but this restaurant was across from the hotel and was open until 9:30 PM. The chips were good and so was the made from scratch sulsa. I had the Fajita Burrito. It arrived fast and piping hot. The flavor was good. The rice was a little over cooked for me, but the flavor was fine. The prices were reasonable. A lot of locals were eating here to, which is a good sign. read more

Chile Rojo was a very good meal and affordable. The food tasted good and the staff was very attentive. I had a burrito and taco, my wife had fajitas. I got the cheese sauce to have with the chips before dinner. Went here for dinner while in town for business. Great chips and salsa. Had a guacamole salad which went great with the chips. Tried the burrito deluxe which was two burritos - one chicken and one steak. Reasonable but not overloaded portions, which allowed for even more chips and salsa. read more

Usually the lone restaurant across from your hotel is never anything to write home about. Chile Rojo is the exception to the rule. Open dining area, courteous waitstaff - thanks Miguel!- and a delicious meal made this a great first experience in Mount Airy. I ordered grilled chicken w a side order of grilled mixed veggies and guacamole. My husband ordered the fried chimichanga meal with cheesecake for dessert. Definitely worth the visit. read more

Great food, generous portions, and excellent service! My husband and I were starving and in the mood for good Mexican food -- Chile Rojo filled the bill. We started with a bowl of the lovely guacamole which was a great choice!! The house salsa is good (not great but not bad either) and the chips are straight from the bag. The menu is exhaustive with plenty of options for everyone. I'm a vegetarian and was happily surprised at the numerous menu choices and combination plates. The patio is a great place to enjoy good food and conversation. Chile Rojo is a place I'd visit again. read more

I wasn't in the mood for a heavy lunch and almost passed on Chili Rojo but I was starving. I ordered the Spinach Quesadilla, it promised and delivered the perfect balance of spinach, rice and black beans. Along with generous portions of pico de gallo, guacamole and lettuce. The service was fast and great -when I stupidly put my straw into the salsa and not into my iced tea, they replaced it immediately with a smile. As I left, I noticed I felt satisfied but not stuffed. We have lived in the area for twelve years and sometimes forget about the tried and true options. After bragging to my husband about my meal, we are meeting there for supper... twice in one day, that's a record LOL Spinach Quesadilla is my new favorite. UPDATE: (July 2016) I usually order the shrimp diablo, shrimp tacos or shrimp nachos... last night I was feeling adventurous and ordered the Carnitas... wow, a new favorite. Not sure what to expect and was surprised to find several huge chunks of pork, wonderfully seasoned and fork tender. I am not an expert on Mexican foods but this stuff stood out as some of the most perfectly cooked and tasty pork I've ever had! I can't give you a full review of the menu as it is extensive. But I will tell you that based on the soup alone (which I could not find on the menu) this restaurant deserves 10/5 stars. I was feeling under the weather and could not find decent soup on the menu at any restaurant so I figured surely I could find some albondigas soup here. Well nope...though that was not an option...the chicken with everything soup...that's what the staff called it...was EVERYTHING. So much homemade cooked slowly in all the right spices chicken paired with so much goodness like avocados and fresh tomatoes, rice. Oh, and those homemade soup croutons that come with it are heaven. Ask for extra. I asked for their extra spicy red sauce to accompany it and I ate off that soup for 2 days. The shrimp fajita burrito was good too, but I wanted to put the soup on dry ice and ship it all the way to California it was so good. I'm a fan. read more

Everyone claims this restaurant is so good but every single time I make a to-go order for a PLAIN shrimp quesadilla and a side of rice I do not get what I ordered. It is NEVER plain and they never understand what I want. It's disappointing when I get home or have to send my plate back. Do they not understand what a plain shrimp quesadilla is? The restaurant is clean and the service has always been friendly. I miss the old owners of this place but it's for personal reasons. Chile Rojo, Mount Airy. This place is awesome. Not only is it the best mexican in Mount Airy its likely some of the best that there is anywhere in NC. It's all that. Plenty of parking in a private lot, outdoor seating, and lots of room inside is only scratching the surface of Chile Rojo. The restaurant and restrooms were clean. Service was fast and friendly, and they got us everything we asked for the first time, and it was all as we ordered it. That is no small task in itself. Chips and salsa were good. My tea glass never went empty. For food I had shrimp tacos. 3 soft taco's loaded with fresh grilled shrimp, and onions. I substituted a guacamole salad for rice or beans. The salad was absolutely great. It had nice shredded lettuce, fresh tomato, graded cheese, and fresh guacamole along with cucumbers. The taco's were loaded with shrimp and they tasted just fantastic. All of the food was fresh tasting, served hot. I have also had the ACC, grilled shrimp on rice with cheese sauce. Again, outstanding and loaded with fresh grilled shrimp. Its hard to find a mexican restaurant where the seafood is good. This is it boys and girls. The holy grail of mexican, with service to match. Easy 5 stars!! read more

I do not write restaurant reviews normally. But the meal I just had, the service I recieved, and the overall experience I enjoyed make it necessary. The place is loud. Yes. The food is simple. Sure. But it was all about the details: Fresh ingredients shone through. Actual presentation at family prices, too! The shrimp fajitas were PERFECT. The staff were attentive and working hard and downright pleasant--with customers and one another. Smiling, even; not fake, either. The manager was involved. The best Mexican restaurant in Mt. Airy. The food is excellent and reasonably priced compared to the other two Mexican restaurants in town. The decor is pretty standard fair but the dining area is very clean. The wait staff is good as well but can be a bit too slack during lunch and early dinner. If you come to Mt. Airy and want some great Mexican food then Chile Rojo should be your first choice. I recommend the fajita nachos. read more
