Tbh a MAJOR surprise. When you see this place from the outside it is so unassuming - tucked away in the middle of a typical small town shopping center. Inside - it's a party. We went on a Wednesday night and surprisingly every booth was filled and it was poppin !! The menu is huge and the quality of the food was very authentic and hit the spot. Huge portions. Now I'm not picky about Mexican food but I gotta say - this place is perfect for satisfying those cravings for super filling enchiladas :) very on par with Mexican restaurants in Texas! I have to say that El Agavero was pretty on point. They had my favorite dish Chori Polo, by the way, it was fantastic! I was disappointed they didn't have a large Texas Margarita, only a small and medium. However, I made due. The food was delicious, and the service was on point. Man, Ole Man! This has got to be the best Mexican Restaurant we've been to! I have no idea if their tortillas are homemade, but they sure taste like it! The drinks are good, and the service usually pretty good if it's not overwhelmingly busy. I also enjoyed the free dessert at the end of our meal! El Agavero is the best Mexican you'll find in Mt Airy. Everything comes out hot and fresh! I always get the salsa verde. The staff is some of the friendliest and most helpful. If there's not something in the menu they're willing to make it and will allow you to modify your dish. read more

They claim to have the best margaritas in town. I don't think that is a customer opinion, it must be their own. We got two margaritas ( a strawberry and lime). The lime came with no salt on the rim and tasted guava or something else. Said it was not lime and sent it back. They gave us another which tasted exactly like the first. Both of them had a chemical after taste. I think they use a powdered mix and it has an artificial sweetener in it. Disgusting. And I think their customers no it because I didn't see one order for a margarita come out while we were there. We only ordered the drinks because they advertise they have white wine but they really don't. Service is pretty bad also. I ordered guacamole as an appetizer and black beans with my dinner. Neither came even with the dinner until I asked for them after hey came with dinner. I think my three star is a generous rating in hind sight. read more

This town has a few different Mexican restaurants. This restaurant has THE BEST SERVICE and the food is amazing as well. If you are a fan of salsa verde, you just ask for them to bring you some out. Our server was great, all the staff was kind and cordial. The food was hot, promptly served, and worth the price. However, at El Agavero one will find no shortage of flies, and if forgetting to swat in between hasty bites, may find a fly in their food, as did I. This is a common problem in the summer for any restaurant, but they do not appear to take any measures to reduce the fly population; even a simple fly tape in every corner would make a difference. I don't go out to have flies and food served together! read more

Stopped in Mt. Airy on the way back to Southport, NC. Went for dinner here on a Sunday night. Great draft beer specials for $1.50 for a 12 oz Dos XX and several other choices. Mexican and domestic bottles were $1.99. Everyone here was really friendly from the host to the servers. Everyone here helped out to make sure the service was top notch. Our server was busy when we were seated and someone else took our drink order in the mean time. The manager/owner(?) checked in to make sure someone had taken our drink order even though we had only been seated a few minutes. We ordered the enchiladas rancheras and the quesadilla rojo. Both were good but not great. We are spoiled because we had great mexican restaurants on Ohio. Food was hot and came out really quick. The chips and salsa were good. The salsa isn't hot so if you want to spice it up ask for their homemade red or green sauce. That will do the trick. Good service makes this place worth a return visit. read more

I went to try the food since I asked a Mexican woman at Walmart and she suggested this place. Well to say the least I was disappointed. I asked for Tacos al Pastor and what was given to me was carne asada mixed with chorizo. It wasn't bad but it also wasn't what I was asking for. Ate here the other day and I had a great time. The menu had a nice variety of dishes, from slightly complex to simple but delicious. I had the Super ACP and it was great! You get your money's worth when it comes to food portions. The service was also a highlight of the stay. Food is usually good, but a couple of occasions I have ordered a favorite item for it to come out completely different. Ordered on Friday afternoon a shrimp quesadilla and was delicious. Wanted to try again today (on a Wednesday 4 days later. Ordered a shrimp Quesadilla and the waiter asked if I wanted salad or rice and beans. I told him I ordered it on Friday and they didn't ask. He rolled his eyes and and sighed that it came one way or the other. I told him the salad would be fine. When they brought it I noticed it was rolled instead of folded, but I ate it and it was still good. When the brought the check it was on the ticket for $11.03 vs $7.50 on the menu. The waiter wouldn't make his way back to the table (had an attitude the whole meal) so I asked the manager about it who was nearby. He said it was a Chimichanga and that I needed to say something when they brought it to the table, otherwise there was nothing he could do. I complained again while paying the check and he was insistent they wouldn't take the $3.53 off the ticket. The waiter never made his way back to the table because he saw me talking to the manager. We finally had to flag the manager again to take the check. Many times we've ate there with party of 15-20 people. Too bad they didn't want to make this right. It will cost them over the years from the business we usually bring that we will take elsewhere. read more

I live in Winston-Salem and just happen to be passing through Mnt Airy. I have eaten at many different Mexican restaurants in Winston, High Point and Greensboro. This is by far the best Mexican food I have had since I moved to North Carolina. I had the tacos and they were the real deal. Tasted just like the street tacos I had in Queretaro, Mexico. The salsa's were were the best That I have had in the United States. This place is a definite must visit. read more

The decor is serviceable but the dining area is always clean. El Agavero barely misses out on the title of best Mexican restaurant in Mt. Airy.
