Chez Prune is a recommended cafe for people in the area of the Canal Saint Martin. It is painted to look extremely arty and cute. Take pictures. The place is photogenic. Prices are extremely reasonable compared to other cafes. You get good value for the money. All sorts of "guides to Paris" mention Chez Prune. * * * Now for the stuff they don't tell you in the guides. None of this makes Chez Prune better or worse. It is still a place to visit. 1) It is on the Canal Saint Martin. 2) The Canal Saint Martin used to be grungy, dirty and awful. The canal itself has been cleaned up and the area has been gentrified. The Canal Saint Martin is now cool. 3) Nine million young people show up at the Canal Saint Martin every weekend if it is sunny. They hang out all day at the canal picnicking and drinking. They are young artsy student-y creative types. This is the perfect place for a meet-cute. The Canal itself only has low stone walls to sit on. The Canal Saint Martin may be scenic but it is NOT comfortable. The young people spend all day there with their wine and their company. The young people there must have the toughest butts in the world. 4) WCs on the Canal Saint Martin are few and far between. They have a handful of male pissoirs. With the new feminism, they now have female pissoirs. (These are not wonderful if you are shy.) If you have to poop ... Well maybe you can get back home. And even if all you have to do is pee - There are lots and lots and lots of young people picnicking on the canal. There are not very many pissoirs - and only half of those are for your particular gender. (Being non-binary would really help here.) So armies of people have to pee (or poop) and they have to get off the canal to do so. So they all flood the local cafes. They pay for their coffee or they pay for their beer. And they head straight for the toilettes. 5) Enter Chez Prune. Chez Prune is crowded anyway. But the line to the toilet far exceeds what you would expect from the crowd in the cafe. Chez Prune has one and only one seat. There is a lot of patience and desperation in that line. 6) Any jokes you want to make about the name "Chez Prune" given the overall situation are strictly up to you. * * * I love the Canal Saint Martin which is a beautiful place with spectacular views. I love Chez Prune - which is beautiful, artistic and a fine place to hang out. There is a front half near the canal and a back half with an urban street view. All of the plumbing drama up near the front half with the canal. Sit in the back and enjoy a wonderful French cafe. Sit in the front and enjoy the Human Comedy. read more

I first came here many years ago on the recommendation of a food magazine (yes before yelp). Wanted to check out the hip neighborhood and the original write up seemed interesting. I now make this place a regular spot on my Paris itinerary. This place gets an extra star for its location. If you can snatch a table outside in this mellow Canal St. Martin restaurant you will be pleased. Sit and watch the world go by. Staff is friendly and patient with my broken French. The food is solid, fresh ingredients, seasonal and a nice combination of meat and veggie dishes. The plates are not complex simple and good. I tend to stick to the pastas and salads. Sucha nice vibe right on the canal. I've been here for lunch and for drinks and both experiences were fantastic. There's a ton of vegetarian options, and the wine and coffee are both great. It's definitely a popular spot at all hours so come prepared for that. In my opinion sitting outside is the ideal option, but the inside is cozy and has fun decorations so you can't go wrong. I am SO happy we came here for lunch before our flight back to NYC! It's situated right near the St. Martin Canal and it's perfect for a quick coffee after walking around. As others have mentioned, the cappuccinos are 3€! Which is cheaper than a lot of places in Paris. Menu is seasonal so entrees are different every week! I had the goat cheese stuffed salmon plate and my boyfriend had the lemon chicken. Portions are just right and great for the price- my salmon came with a side of red quinoa and a small mountain of pickled? carrots/cucumber. Can't think of any other way to describe it, but it was delicious! The lemon chicken was very juicy and had so much flavor...came with a side of mashed yams. One of the best hot chocolates of Paris. Some friends and I went here after walking around the nearby arrondissements for some break time. The entrance was through a big fancy curtain past some doors so that was very unique for a restaurant/café. The place was packed and we had 6 people but they made room for us. The manager and staff were very friendly people. We all got drinks with me getting hot chocolate (€3). There's not much to say when it's only a drink besides that it was one of the best hot chocolates that I've got in Paris so far. Its served in a nice small mug with cocoa powder all over the whip cream that's to the brim of the mug. Optional sugar and of course you have your stirring spoon. American here, so I may not know what I'm talking about ... but this was one of my favorite meals, hands down, during my time in Paris. We made it the night of Tartar and tried to cover all the bases. My friend's and I devoured the beef tartar - none of them had ever had it and the presentation here did not disappoint. Fish tartar was similar to a ceviche, but without as much acid. Also a win. Carpaccio was fresh, not too thinly cut, and nicely seasoned with capers / lemon / greens and dressing. Veggie tartar reminded me of a European guacamole ... it had more crunch than your mexican guacamole, but was a good break from all the meat on the table. Unique wine selection and plenty of cocktails to explore. Bonus: The hand-written menu would make me believe the options here are rotating often which means the kitchen staff is comprised of a group of killer cooks. Hats off to them! Other notes: We were the only English speakers and they catered nicely to us ... but I also have a theory that you know you're in the right place when that's the case. Chez Prune is proof that the best way (next to yelp of course) to find awesome spots in cities you're visiting is to ask your server. Chez Prune was recommended to us by the server at Hotel du Nord (great for dinner, see review) as we needed a place to kill time between dinner and midnight entrance to Silencio (also awesome, see review). Luckily, the Prune was a short walk around the corner from Nord, and right on the canal. It was packed on a Saturday at 1030, with a cosy pub like atmosphere and without any of the pretense of a touristy Paris cocktail bar. This place was obviously popular with locals and priced reasonably. There was a terrace (of course, this is Paris after all) that would have been lovely except that it was December and COLD. I think there were heat lamps but not enough for me to consider parking there. Instead, we managed to score some stool seats in a corner by the kitchen. Aside from a handful of belly up bar spots, the seating is simple wooden table and chair sets, mostly in fours. Service was pretty good, keeping in mind this is a locals/no frills joint. The bartenders we ordered from were good and fast, and one of two spoke English (and he was more than happy to tell us which direction to walk to score a cab when we left). If you're looking for a quintessential Paris experience and want the wine and cheese boards and all that, go somewhere else. But if you are in need of a low key spot to grab a beer and feel relaxed amongst a cheery, cosy crowd, this is your spot. read more

Ugh. I lived and worked at Repu, and this place is pretty iconic in Paris (don't know why), and it's always packed. Service sucks, it's always packed, and the food is really hit or miss. It's kind of bo-bo heaven right now for some reason (not every place right by Canal St. Martin is), and maybe that's why it's falling apart now. It's mainly a place for vacationers and students, seems the locals have started going a few doors down. Their Sunday brunch is pretty interesting and that was the meal i've had there where something wasn't "off". Go for lunch and stay for afternoon drinks. Their lunch menu changes constantly and is always delicious. I would recommend going on a sunny day and sit out on the pavement in front of the canal. A great place for an evening drink too especially during the summer when you can watch everyone sitting by the canal. Food has always been good - been a few times now and the wine is cheap and cheerful, great for a fun date night (they only serve charcuterie or cheese plates at night). This is a place where lots of locals go to have their knock off drinks so maybe brush up on your French skills and attempt to blend in. Probably not an eating spot so stick to people watching and drinking. Although that being said, we didn't actually eat anything (the serving sizes looked pretty huge!). The area along the Canal St. Martin was one of the best discoveries of our trip to Paris. "Hidden" in the neighborhood near Gare de l'Est, Chez Prune was the perfect meeting spot suggested by a friend who'd moved to Paris from Washington. We met on a Sunday afternoon under beautiful blue skies, so the venue couldn't have been more perfect, especially as another friend visiting from Switzerland was just 10 minutes from the station and was able to enjoy a drink with us before hoofing it to the station. We scored an outside table very close to the canal which is exactly what you want. Service was fast and efficient as we enjoyed our drinks and on our way back to our apartment we strolled along the canal watching the Parisians enjoying the beautiful day, once again seduced by la vie en rose. read more

Cool, cool, cool. I rented an apartment around the corner for a while a year or so ago. We used to go inhere all of the time. The service was pretty bad for the neighborhood, but that might be because it's a bit of a hispter-type locals' place. But, when you got someone to be nice enough to help you out, it is great. The food is pretty good; the people in the restaurant are friendly enough, and the location is superb. read more

Weekend brunch consists of three set menus, one with cured salmon and one with ham (for approximately 14 Euro each), and one with either plus juice/coffee/dessert (21 Euro). I normally am not much of a breakfast person. But having found this place, I could easily and readily become a convert. Located along the quai de Valmy (close to the Hotel du Nord, the Citizens Hotel, and Artazarte bookstore) in the now-chic Canal Saint-Martin area, Chez Prune is that watering-hole that invites people to come in for coffee, a drink (or drinks), dessert, or food. In my case, breakfast. I had scarambled eggs served in a clear glass dish, thin slices of Spanish ham, a thick cut of cheese, garlic-infused red Bliss potato slices -- and espresso. By far, the best breakfast I have had in a long time! Packed as always, this laid-back, inexpensive, cool place should be what your neighborhood joint ought to be! Recommended! read more

Every Sunday they have two set brunch menus - gravalax and heavenly scrambled egg or traditional cured ham both served with as much bread, pastries, salad as you can eat and washed down with orange juice and coffee.
