I love this place! How much you ask? I happily and willingly drive 2 hours to come here. I usually get my hair done by Amy, but I have also gotten it done by Evan before. They are both so talented, they're great at listening to what you want and making recommendations based on your face shape and the "feel" that you're going for. I'm kind of an awkward person, and they're both so comfortable to be around, and the atmosphere is like you're hanging out with friends. I've never ever been disappointed by them. Also, I usually bring my brother here and he gets his hair cut by Rex, who has done wonders with my brother's thick, coarse, fro-ey hair. Rex took his time, and spared no attention to detail. My brother loved his hair, which he never really cares about. The prices are reasonable running about $40 for guys, $50-60 for girls for cut, I had long hair so it was $60. I've been going to Jenny to cut my hair before she even came to this hair salon. No matter how far I moved I still find time to come to her to cut my hair cause I'm very picky with my hair. It takes an expert to cut my hair because the way my hair grows and the way my head is shaped. Most places that cuts your hair might know the basics but not every stylist can cut your hair to fit your face and head. Jenny knows hair so you can have full confidence leaving it to her. I've already referred many of my friends and clients to her and everyone continues to go to her now. Ok, the rating is for my stylist - EVAN!! She's grat! I've been following her for years and I still only go to her for my hair. It doesn't matter if it's coloring, long hair, short hair, wedding hair-bride's maid, etc., she alawys does her magic on my hair! The magical thing about her haircut is that it lasts!!.. it's not just a 1-day looking good hair, but the style actually sticks with you even if you wash it many times and style it yourself.. the hair still looks good!! Also, she always tell you how to manage your hair after you walk out of the salon. So you don't have to worry about what about tomorrow? or will i look as good after today?... as long as you're not lazy in doing what she tells you then you hair will look just as good! I've been here once and so far I've had a good experience. Service: My favorite part was the service from my stylist. I got Jenny Chia, and she was really nice. I talked to her about what I wanted, showed her a couple pictures, and then asked her what she thought and if she thought it'd fit my face shape. I appreciate that she listened and told me what she thought about the two different hairstyles I had in mind. I especially appreciated that during the haircut, she gave me many tips about how to style my hair at home, such as how to blowdry my bangs, how to blowdry/curl my hair in different ways. Although at the end, I actually didn't like the way she styled my hair because it looked really funny with my face, I think she did follow what I had mentioned because I had mentioned that cute look is good and also the bangs did follow the picture I showed her. I think it just looks different from what I imagined because I look very different from the girl in the picture I showed her. I think in my mind I had wanted a more cool/edgy look, but I don't know if I had explicitly told her that, and I had mentioned cute is good. But after I got home and styled it differently, the haircut is good. Room for improvement: The lady washing my hair got water all over the sides of my face, which kinda washed away some of my makeup, which is annoying. Jenny Chia recently moved here and I'm so glad I found out before I went to the other salon she used to be at. I've been her client now for over 7 years...yes, 7 years!! She is THAT GOOD and worth keeping!! Jenny listens to me when I want to change (or keep) my hair style. I'll bring in photos and sometimes I won't but whatever she does, it's never a surprise because we've talked about it beforehand. I have three sisters and we all go to her. No joke. And a bonus is that Henry and Mary have moved to this salon as well. All three of them are super kind, hip and attentive. I would give it a 4 because my hair came out pretty nice, though my hair wasn't finished with any mousse or any quality argan oil for volume or smoothing, I was expecting at least that for the price I paid. I didn't like telling the hair stylist what to do, I liked them showing their creativity. The only thing I wasn't sure of was the price. I did my hair both in the Bay Area and in San Diego for the same quality with lower price, probably because I'm new to L.A price range? Overall, Demi was my hair stylist, and she was great. If you are looking for a hair stylist that would listen to you and try to find the middle ground, she is your gal. She really knows her stuff, and is very good with coloring. I found Chez Moi through yelp as they have great reviews for highlights and haircut. Upon my arrival, I felt a little out of place as the salon is primarily seem more accommodating and friendly toward Mandarin speakers which I am not. I found a stylist (whom I will not name because I am not trying to hurt their reputation), however felt very bombarded and confused about their salon's pricing. Be aware, if you're coming in here and they quote you $85 for highlights over the phone, be prepare to drop double if you for a simple highlight without bleaching and nearly $290 for Balayage/Highlights. In addition, they charge you a "mandatory" $35 to blow-dry/style your hair. I told my stylish this was not necessary as I am use to curling and styling my own hair a particular way and was denied as "this is company's policy." Overall, I was disappointed in my $165 highlight ($130 highlight, $35 "mandatory styling fee) as the colors was hardly even noticeable. I wish my stylish would have given me more of "expert option" as this is why I picked this person, however would most likely not go back. Best advice: Be very clear about what you want, what the prices are and how long it would take prior to coming in here. Also be vocal and assertive if you are feeling you are being deceived. read more

I made an appointment with Jenny for a much needed cut and color. Jenny cares about your hair and she'll listen to what you want, but she'll also let you know if and why a certain style or color cannot work with your hair. She spent a good amount of time prepping/parting my hair and (I think - she's not a big talker so I'm not sure) figuring out how my hair hangs from my head before actually cutting it. It seemed like she was measuring every single strand of my hair, and making sure it was at the length it was supposed be. I really appreciated that because it does makes a huge difference in the way it looks and moves. My hair has not had this kind of meticulous attention in a long long time. I also noticed that both Jenny and her assistant took their time drying/styling my hair so that the heat from the dryer would not damage my hair. Her assistant, Mary, was super friendly and always made sure I was comfortable and had something to drink and read while waiting for my color to set. I was very happy with the end product and with the service. It is a bit pricey, but I think it's worth it. I was not pressured at all into buying any products or getting any additional treatments. Jenny also nicely lectured me to stop trying to cut my own bangs, which means I'll be seeing her in about 2 weeks. I don't mind, because I think I found my new hair stylist! read more

I came here because of the high yelp reviews and this salon has a lot of experience with Asian hair. I have a natural very dark brown/black hair medium-long length. I wanted to dye my whole hair a very cool ash brown/blonde. Henry and Mary did an EXCELLENT job dying my hair. Henry told me if I wanted to achieve that color he had to bleach my hair and see what colors we could get on a realistic scale. Henry knows what he's doing and has a lot of experience. Mary did the application and she was very pleasant and social. After 3 1/2 hours I achieved the hair color I wanted. NO. It turned out yellow, by then, I just had to leave or I would have NO hair left on my head. They have NO idea what they are doing in there, overpriced, and NO experience to show for it. I had a great experience from the very beginning. The receptionist was nice and welcoming. The shampoo lady was very sweet and engaging. Billy, my hairstylist, was great. He understood exactly what I wanted him to do with my hair. i had had an okay experience in the past hair salon I went to where they left my hair choppy and puffy (due to my hair being wavy). Billy worked his magic though and evened out my hair cut, leaving my hair feeling very healthy and cute =). I gave this place 4 stars because I wish Billy would have thinned out my hair a little more in the back. Otherwise, everything else was great. For me, visiting a new salon is kind of like going to the OBGYN. I decided to give this place a try after reading the reviews on Yelp because it was close to where I live. I didn't have an appointment but called ahead and got an okay for a walk-in. Everybody there was asian. I am apprehensive of asian hair salons because I don't want to walk out with asian hair. It started with what seemed like a never-ending shampoo and scalp/head massage that could only be summed up by 'OMG...WTF?!' The shampoo consisted of the shampooer repeatedly running her claws, I mean, fingernails, in a downward motion from forehead to the nape of my neck after my shampoo and conditioning. It was P-A-I-N-F-U-L...but I managed an expressionless face as I imagined clawing her eyes out. The pain intensified as she began the head massage. She massaged my hairline and temples in a crushing vice-like effect, then repeatedly pushed down with iron thumbs at the top of my head like she was trying to shove her thumbs in my head! And this woman had bionic strength - one would swear she was a man. NEVER in my life have I been victim to such practices at a salon. I subtly glanced next to me at a fellow patron who was also getting her hair shampooed and noticed her shampooer doing the same thing with the fingernails. I wondered if her nerves were dead, thus allowing her to relax. Finally...the shampoo was over and I had a crazy effing headache. If I had Tylenol on me, I would have downed half the bottle. Finally I was brought to the stylists chair and seated. The shampooer handed me 2 magazines when she returned with my glass of water. Tim was my stylist and he spent a few minutes examining my hair before starting. I showed him a photo of what I wanted...a medium to long layered haircut with sideswept bangs. I showed him 2 photos of Maria Menounos that I had brought with me and he NOT ONCE referred to them during my haircut. The haircut process was quite lengthy. Tim was VERY meticulous...measuring over and over the length of each side to match, which was good, but not in the context of your stylist doing whatever the 'F' he wants to your hair. I said I liked the way my current face framing layers were and how they blended into the rest of my hair and he blended alright...in an OCD sort of way that left my hair around my face in a diagonal shape, not as subtle or natural as one would expect. When he was finished, I said the corners in the front were too square so he started to trim away... I kept saying "Ok, that's good" and "I don't want it to be too thin" to let him know to STOP cutting but he kept cutting and cutting! I was freakin out inside. The bangs were the only thing I liked...that is, until he began the styling. He applied some wax to my hair and after he styled it, turned off the blowdryer and mussed up my entire head by running his fingers through it so that it was a mess again. The styling was a nightmare but it was better than the mussed up mess. I asked if he could shape the swideswept bangs slightly with the curling brush so that it wouldn't poke my eyes and he flipped it UPWARDS (a la 70's Farrah Fawcett !!!), instead of in the downward direction of the bangs to curve it slightly. Then he added hairspray...to a nightmare do...that I couldn't wait to undo. I paid the $45 and tip and got out of there. Luckily I brought my sunglasses with me and I put them on immediately to remain incognito. They didn't seem familiar with celebrity hair or current styles aside from the same boy-like short razored do that all the asian girls were sportin at the salon. The shampooer thought Maria Menounos was my friend! Definitely not going back there again. Now I'm heading to the store to see what products can salvage my haircut. Over a week later I could not bring myself to love this haircut even with the pomade I bought, which helped ALOT. I had specifically told Tim to cut my bangs so that I could sweep it to either side but he parted it to my left and did not cut it to be swept to the right. When I swept my bangs to the right the day following the haircut, the ends looked blunt and square-ish...it was horrible. I had to bobby pin it out of the way. I ended up going back to my former stylist a few days ago to ask them to fix the mess. I did not like the lil bit of v shaped barely there pathetic fringe sticking out in back. The girl fixed my bangs and removed th e fringe in less than 5 minutes. I had to pay $18 for the fix, bringing the total to $71 for this haircut. Now I wouldn't have minded throwing down more than that if I left there looking like the bomb. I'm thinking either some of the yelpers who reviewed this place works or knows somebody who works there or some bitches just wanna mess you up :(. read more

I've bad experiences before at hair salons but I've never complained before, maybe because I've never had my hair falling in chewy,sticky, gum like pieces I was very excited to get a hair dye in this place. Based on the reviews it appeared to be one of the best places so I decided to get a blue/grey dye. Worst decision ever. My hair was over bleached , maybe because the stylest dissapeared to the back and kept using her cellphone. Too busy to check my burning hair.The color was nothing like what I asked for and they basically forced me to get a hideous short haircut because the severe damage my hair was left in. I still paid and left disappointed but I did not complain. Until after a couple of days when after washing my hair for the first time after the dye to my horror pieces of hair start falling off the back of my head. What a nightmare. Showed up to the salon to show them the state my hair was left in and Henry refused a refund. I was letting my hair grow and was forced to get a pixie cut elsewhere because of it. I LOVE Rex. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. I am extremely sad that he is moving overseas and I did not find him sooner. After my sister's horrible haircut experience at the (used to be) regular stylist, I came to the conclusion that I needed to find someone that didn't overbook and give you a lop-sided cut (which made my sister seriously cry). This was after me also trying to find an excuse to why she gave me bangs when I absolutely said "no bangs." Seeing how fabulous my cousin's hair was, she referred me to Rex. Oh man, I was NOT disappointed. The hair wash was so refreshing and the massage that came along with it was amazing. He takes his time with your cut and is absolutely easy to talk to. If you want a certain style, he will give you a honest opinion. My cut took up to two hours, which was well worth the time and I was only charged 45 dollars before tips. He is easy to talk to and will call you if he thinks that you may have to wait longer than a certain time and ask if it's okay to come in later. She replied it's okay you have a lot of hair to lose. What the heck did that mean? Was she not listening? But I decided To put my trust in her because she did a great job the first time I went to her. Boy was I wrong! She thin out a lot of my hair plus my front was not shape equally. my left side was longer than my right side. And she took like 2 hours cutting my hair when my hair was short to begin with. So I basically made a Yelp account just to rave about my stylist because she really is just that good. Joan has done my hair for literally the past 10 years (and now three of my cousins' hair as well...plus their kids), and despite me moving to IL for med school, I refuse to get my hair done by anyone else (and believe me, I have tried, generally with lukewarm to disastrous results). She's sweet, easy to work with, and so damn good at her job that I essentially walk in, tell her to do whatever she thinks will look good, and I walk out with fantastic looking (and low maintenance!) hair. I come here twice a year for trims ($50!) and once a year for a digital perm/trim ($345!!!), but knowing that my hair is guaranteed to end up looking awesome every single time I come here makes the hefty price tag worth it, even for this starving, poor, and massively in-debt med student. read more

So here goes my first yelp review. I never felt compelled enough to take the time to write a review until now. Why? Because it's going to be a bad review. I looked on Yelp and found the reviews for Code 5 to be more on the positive side. I quickly made an appointment with my (now ex) stylist, Louis. The receptionist said he charged $60/haircut and was the lead cut stylist who taught classes every Thursday. I thought I was in good hands but I was wrong. Instead of being a bitch and insulting Louis' work to his face, I'm choosing to be passive-aggressive and write a bad review on Yelp. Louis, I hope you're reading this, because you should know why I will not be coming to see you again. I asked you to give me a haircut with lots of volume and layers. The haircut I now have is severely thinned out, which gave my hair a bland and flat look. If you looked up "mushroom head" in google images, you might find my picture there! When I asked if he could add more layers he sighed at me and said, "You can look at the floor and see how much hair I have already cut!" Oh no he di'nt!! ** Everyone, you know you have a shitty haircut when 1). Nobody at work even notices that you got a haircut; and 2). You put your hair up in a ponytail for the rest of the week. At $60/haircut (plus $15 tip) you would think that you are going to walk away with a good haircut. Lesson learned: just because it's expensive doesn't mean it's quality. If I could, I would've continued going to this Hispanic lady who charged me $8/haircut that got me TONS of compliments. Unfortunately she moved away and I made the wrong decision to choose an all-Asian hair salon. I will be paying the price for the next few months until my shit-shag hairdo grows itself out. HOWEVER, if you are into that whole shaggy, flat looking, Chinese-Japanese-Korean pop star haircut then look no further because Louis is your man! Thanks to their new front desk lady, (Her name is Mindy Li). I scheduled an appointment at 2:00 PM since my stylist had another at 4:00 PM. When I arrived, I asked her if my stylist Kien was here already. She answered: "Kind of..." "KIND OF?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?" That's very PROFESSIONAL and HELPFUL indeed. Thank you! I went outside and gave Kien a call. He apologized and informed me that the new lady had screwed up my appointment. He was on his way. When I came back inside. She told me that Kien wasn't coming anymore and asked if I wanted another stylist. At this point I just sat down and ignored her.
