We were staying in Nice for a week and I wanted to find a local boulangerie to frequent. I love boulangeries especially since each has their own specialty and there is a lot of pride in their work. Chez Maitre Pierre was close, had great reviews, and seemed ideal. Unfortunately the experience wasn't great. The woman who served us was impatient even though there wasn't any other customers. She took the wrong order and then blamed me for it. The hot chocolate was made with Nesquick and was barely warm. Literally one and 1/2 scoops of Nesquick and somewhat steamed. The saving grace was the bread Ancienne. It was so delicious. Crusty and then soft in the middle. I went back to order more bread thinking it was an isolated incident but same terrible service but from a different person. I did read another review which said the croissants and other pastries didn't look fresh. There is a section next to the cash register with a jumble of pastries that look left over from the day before. Having been in France for the past 6 months, I would agree that it is surprising to see this display. read more

Best almond croissant ever!!! I trooped it across town on a rainy Sunday morning only to find out the cafe was closed. I am so glad I tried again later in the week, the cafe is cute and quaint and filled with delicious pastries. Her almond croissant was my favorite. It was soft and flaky and filled with delicious, sweet almond paste. She has tons of lunch options as well like sandwiches, quinoa salads and focaccia pizzas. I came too late on a Saturday morning to be able to try the almond croissant I keep hearing about. Sold out by 11:30 or so. But nonetheless I got a plain croissant & it was flaky, soft, buttery, and very good. Also had a small quiche & then a berry crumble: both were tasty but they didn't heat them up enough. Totally a 5 star if they were just warmer. Also the staff seemed a little impatient with my questions & lack of French fluency but that is a normal feeling between the American tourist-French local. Tons of fresh baguettes lined the walls of the shop & regular customers running in & out for their daily order. I even came back for some afternoon sandwiches, believe it was a tuna sandwich on a round roll & then a caprese sandwich....both were excellent & the bread was French perfection with a crunchy exterior, soft interior. Good bakery off Rue Messena. Easy to miss, so keep your eyes peeled. Right near the Amorino gelaterie. Had a wonderful breakfast there with two café au laits and a couple of pastries. The almond croissant was life-changing. In the usual sweet nut-butter, crispy almond, dripping with butter fashion, this beautiful pastry made us both pause for reflection. The plain croissant was on the lackluster side, but my disappointment was trumped by the almond croissant. Service was friendly. Order at the counter and they will bring it to you outside to sit al fresco. Don't take too long ordering -- there's a brisk and mildly aggressive crew of regulars waiting to get their bread. This was our last breakfast in Nice and it was lovely and quaint. If you're like me, you probably count down the seconds and nanoseconds whenever you're going to Paris simply for the phenomenally delicious pastries that blanket the city. Don't get me wrong, we're lucky in Montreal to have many authentic French pastries at awesome establishments, but I could swear that the ingredients in France simply taste better. Needless to say, as soon as we booked our trip to Nice, I started envisioning all the yumminess I would soon stuff my face with. Upon arriving, we discovered that Chez Maitre Pierre had great reviews on Yelp and was only a 5 minute walk from our hotel! You can probably imagine my excitement as we made our way there at 9am on our first day there. My excitement was quickly deflated - old pastries lined the store, and many spots supposed to be filled with items remained empty from the day before. It seemed like fresh pastries wouldn't be ready for hours which I found strange and very different from Paris, but nonetheless, we grabbed a croissant and a chocolatine. I cannot express to you my disappointment as I bit into these pastries. Expecting a buttery, crunchy exterior, and a glorious soft and fluffy interior was clearly too much because we definitely didn't get that. What we got were boring pastries that we could get anywhere in the world. Nothing special. I chalked it to them being a day old, and so the next day we came back looking for mille feuilles. Sadly, we were told that they decided not to make any that day (????), so instead, we went for an eclair which is sooooooo delicious in Paris (we can literally not stop eating them there). Again, we were disappointed. The eclairs were not good at all.... Throughout our journey in Nice, we tried pastries from other places as well, and were always disappointed. Because of that, I don't want to fault this bakery specifically but in reality, the pastries here are just ok. Nothing special or exciting about them and definitely nothing like the pastries you can get in Paris. Wouldn't really recommend to be honest! I'll just have to keep dreaming about those Parisian morsels of heaven until I can get myself there again I guess! read more

OMG the almond croissants... Honestly, they should be regulated. After we had them one day, we were like crack addicts seeking them out for the next several days, and faced crushing disappointment on a couple of occasions when the bakery was closed or sold out. Just go there and get one, and get more than one if you can - they have enough sugar to keep for an extra day. There is nothing much else worth eating here, so don't settle for less. My mate were staying at a hotel nearby, so we came by here to get a light breakfast before heading out for the day (and to avoid paying the hotel's exorbitant prices for their breakfast buffet). Although it's located in the middle of a street full of tourist trap restaurants, it's a place that the locals visit for their coffee and breads. For under €5, you can get a pastry and a coffee (or Orangina, in my case). We liked it so much that we came back again the next morning. I had a chausson aux pommes (apple turnover) one morning, and a chocolate croissant the other. Both were delicious and authentically French. It has a nice small patio where you can enjoy your morning coffee and viennoiserie before heading out again. It's a good place to do a bit of people watching. If your hotel is nearby, you should come here and get your morning snack. read more

Absolutely the best of French pastries in a cozy place, locals and tourists enjoying the delights. Get there before 10 as they sell out. The orange juice is freshly pressed and has a wonderful non acid sweet taste. Also the small whole grain rolls with raisins are tasty. Do not miss this Nice experience. Bad news - they are closed on Sunday. I should have checked the hours on my Yelp last night. Now I'm faced with a sad hotel breakfast at double the price. Boo hoo! read more
