I didn't understand why they would still be open if there is a possibility that they weren't serving dinner anymore! He came back out of the kitchen and agreed to seat us. We placed our order and then the waiter disappeared again for a while and basically didn't return until our food was ready. The food itself was pretty tasty, but it wasn't anything mind blowing. Part of the reason that people go out to dinner is for the food, but if the service is horrible, then what's the point?! Based on the service, this would not be a place that I would want to come back to.

I've tried and loved the salmon fish-cakes with french fries and lime and coriander mayonnaise. For some reason though, whenever I sit down on one of their comfy, red and white chairs, take a sip of coffee and pick up the menu - I always find myself dreaming of the thick, french onion soup with a gruyere crouton floating on top of a bowl of caramelised onions and rich beef stock. Its fully licensed here and they do serve a really nice South African Merlot for around £12 or of course you can just stick to the Harveys as it hasn't had more than 20 yards to travel!

The tea was tea and the cake was pretty tasty although the frosting was overly sweetened. Other foods include sandwiches, bagettes, fish and chips, pie and chips etc etc. The food is apparently all homemade and looked reasonably tasty. Situated in a small shopping hall with a food hall, craft shops and gift retailers, there are also said to be good views over the river but we weren't able to see them from where we were sitting. They advertise free wifi but it wasn't working on our visit. Service was a little slow and a little surly. Overall, it's fine for a cake and a cuppa, but there are better options in Lewes if you require something a little more substantial.

As it was so hot, we found ourselves walking right along the main street by the seafront, and passed The Arrogant Frog. They had cute wooden tables and matching chairs outside, but two things caught my eye: the words "cocktail" and "menu" in quick succession. The Arrogant Frog (fantabulous name, admit it) runs a happy hour from 3-6pm during the week, and also sometime on Saturday. Cocktails and food from the bar menu are half price. As their prices are already reasonable, this is a great deal. There are over THIRTY cocktails to choose from. That's right, 3-0. And try them, I did. My husband, not really the SATC cocktail type, drank Coronas for £1.25, beerhead heaven! My cocktail favourites include The Banana Batida, a sweet, banana (duh) flavoured drink, The French 76, a fantastic vodka sour topped with Champagne, and the Sergeant Pepper, a fun mix with Pepper-flavoured vodka! Avoid at all costs The Last Word, a sickly, green sweetsweetsweet drink that gives you a sugar-studded immediate drunkeness that isn't pleasant! The service here was very good, and our kind French waiter stopped and chatted with us, and practiced his English on us. We had salad, bread and mushrooms from the bar menu, and all were freshly prepared, with excellent flavours, and small, delicate touches (spicy, salsa verde vinaigrette on the salad, ginger seasoning on the mushrooms) that thrilled the palate. We loved The Arrogant Frog so much, we went back three times whilst we were in Brighton! There was a conference of 6,000 civil servants in town, and the few that we spoke to said that The Arrogant Frog was one of their favourite places in Brighton, as they came every year for the conference. Living in Sydney where brekkie is a cultural touchstone, I'm used to a much higher standard - I was the first and only customer at Browns this morning and it really was a complete and utter disappointment. The staff member dealing with me was really lovely though and tried to make up for it. Overall, a pretty dire standard for what's meant to be an upmarket bistro. Sadly, I won't be be going back.

Anyway, back to the one serving breakfast.... Sunday morning and we wanted breakfast. Browns had been recommended. Tried to book, but to no avail, nor via the telephone system. Just couldn't get to speak to a human being. Walked there and took the chance. A few tables on the front were occupied, but all clear inside. My wife ordered a coffee, and I ordered a fruit juice. If the latter had been fresh then I could have understood the price (£3.50). I know my orange juices and this was made from concentrate. My wife wanted: scramble egg with smoked salmon on toast (note: I can't see listed on their site, but it was on the menu given to us), unfortunately, they didn't have any smoked salmon. Amazing! So, she then asked for the mashed avocado on toast (again not shown on the site menu). No avocados! This was beginning to get like the cheese shop sketch from Monty Python. In the end, scrambled eggs on toast! My wife commented to me that these items are easy to get by nipping down to the local supermarket. Now on this same menu I chose the traditional breakfast.... On the site it says: Traditional breakfast Smoked bacon, outdoor bred pork sausages, two eggs, baked beans, flat mushrooms, black pudding, grilled tomato, sourdough toast, Netherend Farm butter I declined the grilled vine tomatoes, not on the above. There was no black pudding up for offer. The mushrooms were not of the flat variety. So, here we go: Smoked bacon - overcooked and difficult to eat. Sausages - well overcooked and near burnt and brittle. Fried Eggs - overcooked and dry, with crispy edges. Very small mushrooms cooked to death, very black and greasy as hell. Toast- nearly burnt. Butter - very little, and must be on WW2 rationed supplies. If this is really the best they can do, given that I was the only one ordering breakfast at that time, then I'm not going back. In hindsight, I wished I'd taken a picture.

It had more to do with poor service - sometimes long waits and seemingly aloof and supercilious waiters. Yet the last time I came we had a much more enjoyable and relaxed encounter altogether, a curteous attitude and efficiency in the kitchen. The food is worth a mention though. Firm favourites for me include the Oysters, Snails, and Monkfish Ragout with a side of Gratin Dauphinois. As you'd imagine, the wine list represents the best of France (push the boat out with a classic Chateauneuf du Pape perhaps) but the new world is equally represented. For the price though, there's still room for improvement.

The food is expensive and great quality, but so is everything else here. It's part of the La Fourchette, and so the expectations are summarily high. There's nothing wrong with this kind of quality and prices, I'd say it was perfect for Hove, but it isn't good enough to be more than expensive and for special occasions only. The food is French and excellent: often more seafood-y than other French classics around town, which is better for the more open, bistro-y feeling of the place. The real draw here for me is the wine list: the bistro feel continues onto the expansive and qualitative wine list. Yes it's pricey, but there's little better than a lovely glass of wine in nice surroundings. Comparable to In Vino Veritas in town, Pascal is a nice play to sit with some vino, although it is a bit of a snip. Still, if that appeals to you, like me, once in a while, here's another place to go for tasty bistro nibbles and great wine.

When we came there were no sun on the outside area, but it slowly came around the corner and stayed until we left. So, a nice place for a couple of hours in the sun, but be quick about it, cause we were not the only ones in for some sun. They also have a rather small menu, I choose the bacon sandwhich. It tasted good, but it was a lot of bread for one person and I missed some vegetables. I had a little cheese on top of it and poured some of their kethup on, not bad actully, despite the fact of veggies lacking and the insane amount of bread. My better half said that his fries were the best he had in Brighton. I did not try them, but he referred to them as crisp and nice. They had some rosemary planted outside, but I dont think that would go too well with my bacon and ketchup, so the plants are still there (even if some green stuff would have been lovely on my sandwhich). The bread was good by the way, but I had to leave more than half of it. Other itmes on the menu looked good as well from what I could tell. They have some wines, some beers and nice coffee as well. From what I saw through the windows, the inside area looked well planned out design wise with wooden tables and chair. Price wise I guess its a little over average, but for a quick meal and a coffee, very manageable. Service was quick and nice. If ever in Brighton again, I would not hesitate to sit here for a couple of hours, sipping some cider and wathing people walk by. (Pardon any errors, English is not my first language).

I must have walked past this restaurant in it's previous guise a million times but have never…read moreventured in. It's latest reinvention is as Grow 40 and when other lunch spots were full, Grow 40 could offer us a table so we jumped at the chance. We were seated upstairs right at the back which is a very informal area, maybe better suited for coffee as opposed to lunch, but cosy none the less. There were four of us, plus the little man, so it was a bit of a squeeze around the small table, but we managed with a bit of juggling. As is the current fashion, Grow 40 favours local, independent produce, but unlike many other restaurants, they actually grow some of their own produce on their roof garden. Unfortunately, they don't have highchairs which meant it was a little difficult for me to eat my lunch while balancing a inquisitive one year old on my lap. It's quite unusual in family-friendly Brighton to find a restaurant that doesn't cater well for small people, and the lack of facilities was a surprise. I ordered a burger, and I have to say it was one of the best i've had a in a long time. Moist, flavoursome, well seasoned and tasty. The fries were a little salty but were also tasty. My partner had the fish and chips and was also very impressed - the fish was very fresh and not too oily. Our dining companions had the chorizo open sandwich and seemed to enjoy. The staff were friendly and accommodating and the vibe here is nice. I would like to try their breakfast menu as it features both lobster and champagne! They have a private members wine club which sounds intriguing but something I probably won't get to try out for a few years now! My only complaint is the lack of children's facilities. I'm not expecting toys and a kid's menu as it's not that kind of place, but changing facilities and a highchair should be available.

Yes there's a massive student population and hoards of tourists, but they would have to do nothing in Brighton except drink tea to warrant the cafes and coffee shops on every corner! Also, I liked the weird little food stall that lived outside this building previously- I made risky purchases from a random guy...strange chocolate and giant olives stuffed with god knows what. I miss those days! Be that as it may, we have a new café on our hands! And despite my skeptical intro, I do actually quite like it. Although self-consciously ram-shackled and shabby-chic, Café Delice manages to pull it off quite well and does capture a certain French charm. The café occupies a lovely large space too, which is very unusual considering the area- most of the other Lanes cafes are quite poky and little. I've yet to try the food, but the coffee is very well made, if a tad pricey. They have nice little seats outside, but I actually prefer the spacious airiness of the inside, away from the chaos of the shoppers!

Occupying a corner on Kensington Gardens, Cafe Delice is one of the latest cafe-bars to emerge in…read morethe North Lanes. Spread over two floors, it's a welcoming space with wooden floorboards, old tables and chairs and a couple of comfy leather sofas. The close proximity to shops and offices means it's constantly bustling with a lively mix of tourists, locals and professionals. I once went for a meeting and noticed I was the only person in the room without a laptop! Whilst Cafe Delice scores full marks for cosiness, I have to admit I'm not a fan of either the food or drink. The pastries I sampled were just okay whilst the americano, latte and cappucinos I've had on different occasions were all too bitter and lukewarm. Maybe the wine is better but since the music and service were as forgettable as the pasties, I'm unlikely to rush back.
