We had a great time at Browns. We came with a two locals and we had a surprise birthday celebration. Our waiter was really nice and gave me recommendations on everything from wine to dessert. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. We plan on making the trip down from London to Brighton again because we enjoyed our time so much.

Next door to each other, Browns Bar and Brasserie is part of a chain that doesn't sit too well in eclectic and independent Brighton. The restaurant serves up classic 'British' dishes such as steak and chips, roasts, and fish. There's also a selection of fish, salads and pasta dishes, and breakfasts and cream teas. Although there is a wide variety of classic meals on the menu, the atmosphere and decor of the brasserie bring it down a bit. You can see what the place is aiming to achieve - a kind of stylish, sophisticated and chic place wanting to attract the young professionals of Brighton, however the faux leather seating and dim lighting give Browns a very 'chain restaurant' vibe - you could be in any one of their restaurants across the country, and the place doesn't capture Brighton's uniqueness very well at all. But the bar is a different story - yes the brown leather (see what they did there?!) and dim lighting still exists, but the cocktail menu is vast and expanding, and drinks are concocted by talented and passionate bar staff. For four nights of the week many of the cocktails are a mere £3.50 each, a bargain considering the lack of good, affordable cocktails in the city. So, a thumbs up for the bar and a thumbs down for the restaurant. But I always think cocktails are the most important part of eating out anyway!

We arrived in Brighton for a concert and had just over an hour to kill before the show so decided to grab a quick bite to eat at Brown's. Having been to a couple of others in the chain I wasn't expecting the experience to be as good as it was but I put my faith in you Yelpers! The decor lent no clue to the fact it is a chain restaurant, it had the feel of a one off with a fairly large yet still cosy floorplan. Service was good, we were given a choice of seating area and our waiter (Maz) was polite and attentive, suggesting accompaniments to actually suit our choices rather than sounding as though he was just trying to up sell on sides. Food was good, again exceeding my expectations from other Brown's outlets. Presentation was thoughtful and rivalled that of much more expensive places I have eaten. All told a good solid 4* experience. Two mains with drinks came in at just under forty quid.

Small, cool, unassuming, and a little tucked away. Definitely one of those IYKYK restaurants. Sat at the bar and immediately knew I was in the right place. The natural wine selection is fantastic. The wine program is on point. We ordered a few things to share. The oysters were excellent, super fresh, and they had Porthilly Rocks, which is always a good sign if you know oysters. Everything that came out was just simple food done properly. Nothing overcomplicated, just really good ingredients and a kitchen that clearly knows how to cook. You can also tell this is a real culinary crowd kind of place. Not a tourist trap. The place felt abuzz with aficionados. Brighton has a number of good restaurants, but Plateau stands out. If I lived here, I'd be in this place all the time. Strong recommendation.

So many great restaurants having an affordable menu which you may not always get a chance to dine at. We dined from Plateau's autumn set menu. For starters, I opted for the cured salmon, apple, fennel and lemon. It was so delicate and fresh. The salmon, slightly salted REALLY really played with the flavours of the fennel and apple. A great light starter, my dining partners opted for the pigs head croquette, and though they said delicious, it was a lot going on. For mains, I had pumpkin risotto with walnuts and my favourite Barkham blue cheese. It was so creamy! I always feel a little miffed when the veg option is a risotto but this was very very tasty. Onto more cheese.. dessert! I went for the Spenwood and quince. Spenwood is a pressed sheep's cheese. We also ended up getting a cheeky little blackberry cheesecake as well. This was a cheesecake from heaven! Definitely recommend.

As is always the case, you're rewarded for drinking ale, which is a little cheaper than lager pints. But whatever you choose, you won't be buying to get trashed. Its not that kind of place... Its good to go for a social, slow drink or two, or for a relaxed chill out. The blend of contemporary styles, from the bar stools and cushioned bench along the wall, to the mirror balls and coloured lights blends very very pleasingly with older details, like wooden panelling, shelves of books and a traditional bar layout. Small things make it feel special too, such as bringing round candles as it starts to get dark... I know its only a minor detail, but it made sitting in Medusa Bar fell special and unique... I like it a lot here... especially seeing as they play albums through from start to finish, instead of chopping and changing the whole time.

Medusa is a step up from most of the other bars in the area, being a bit less low-class than some of the other drinking places in the area, and generally cheaper and more pleasant to relax in. If you've just been for dinner and need a place to sit down afterwards, Medusa is a great alternative to heading too far back into town, especially if the weather's a bit naff. Medusa is hard to define, as it mixes much of the pub atmosphere with more of a wine-bar-chill-out seating arrangement and the like. It generally works very well: the prices are cheap, and the atmosphere is very friendly and relaxed. This is a great place to perch on a cushion and let the world spin by; not exactly a rarity in Brighton, but certainly in this area. If you're looking for a good chill-out place in the area, Medusa may be a great place for you to sit: it is just worth remembering that the crowd that like this area will likely make this place less relaxed later into the evening.
