So many great restaurants having an affordable menu which you may not always get a chance to dine at. We dined from Plateau's autumn set menu. For starters, I opted for the cured salmon, apple, fennel and lemon. It was so delicate and fresh. The salmon, slightly salted REALLY really played with the flavours of the fennel and apple. A great light starter, my dining partners opted for the pigs head croquette, and though they said delicious, it was a lot going on. For mains, I had pumpkin risotto with walnuts and my favourite Barkham blue cheese. It was so creamy! I always feel a little miffed when the veg option is a risotto but this was very very tasty. Onto more cheese.. dessert! I went for the Spenwood and quince. Spenwood is a pressed sheep's cheese. We also ended up getting a cheeky little blackberry cheesecake as well. Medusa is hard to define, as it mixes much of the pub atmosphere with more of a wine-bar-chill-out seating arrangement and the like. It generally works very well: the prices are cheap, and the atmosphere is very friendly and relaxed. This is a great place to perch on a cushion and let the world spin by; not exactly a rarity in Brighton, but certainly in this area. If you're looking for a good chill-out place in the area, Medusa may be a great place for you to sit: it is just worth remembering that the crowd that like this area will likely make this place less relaxed later into the evening.

Living in Sydney where brekkie is a cultural touchstone, I'm used to a much higher standard - I was the first and only customer at Browns this morning and it really was a complete and utter disappointment. The staff member dealing with me was really lovely though and tried to make up for it. Overall, a pretty dire standard for what's meant to be an upmarket bistro. Sadly, I won't be be going back.

If the latter had been fresh then I could have understood the price (£3.50). I know my orange juices and this was made from concentrate. My wife wanted: scramble egg with smoked salmon on toast (note: I can't see listed on their site, but it was on the menu given to us), unfortunately, they didn't have any smoked salmon. Amazing! So, she then asked for the mashed avocado on toast (again not shown on the site menu). No avocados! This was beginning to get like the cheese shop sketch from Monty Python. In the end, scrambled eggs on toast! My wife commented to me that these items are easy to get by nipping down to the local supermarket. Now on this same menu I chose the traditional breakfast.... On the site it says: Traditional breakfast Smoked bacon, outdoor bred pork sausages, two eggs, baked beans, flat mushrooms, black pudding, grilled tomato, sourdough toast, Netherend Farm butter I declined the grilled vine tomatoes, not on the above. There was no black pudding up for offer. The mushrooms were not of the flat variety. So, here we go: Smoked bacon - overcooked and difficult to eat. Sausages - well overcooked and near burnt and brittle. Fried Eggs - overcooked and dry, with crispy edges. Very small mushrooms cooked to death, very black and greasy as hell. Toast- nearly burnt. Butter - very little, and must be on WW2 rationed supplies. If this is really the best they can do, given that I was the only one ordering breakfast at that time, then I'm not going back. In hindsight, I wished I'd taken a picture.

It also does food, with an Italian theme, Tues-Sats until 9pm, although we've not eaten here (yet). There's subtle piped music (80s electro-synth the other night) and a mixed crowd - during the evening it seemed to go through both quiet and busy patches. But not a bad place for a quiet pint, and for once you can have a conversation without having to shout.

I was chatting to my Dad about this, who informed me that its a game he and my Mum played back in the 70s, and was strangely addictive. The bar staff are more than friendly enough, and with a decent looking garden and the promise of food, it has everything you need from a pub. Don't be put off by the slight walk out of town, or the quiet nature of the place, as its really worth dropping by for a quick round of pub billiards, and the pleasant atmosphere.

We stumbled upon this place totally by accident, and to be honest with you, from the outside it looks like a pretentious fancy pub, with fancy décor and not an awful lot of good food. Well, the place HAS fancy décor, It's kind of flashy and I would usually avoid such place. But what the hell. We were seated on the balcony upstairs, we had a view of the isle-bar serving smoking cocktails (literally smoking, by the way) and I thought I had better order something hard to mess up, just in case my prejudice is right and food there wasn't going to be all that much. So we ordered a baked Camembert, a cheese board (what do you mean that's too much cheese? Sorry, can't hear you over the sound of this Stilton feasting in my mouth), and the only burger in the menu. I'm going to say it now: that was THE best burger I've had in the UK, and second best only to one I've had abroad. The bun was perfect: soft with crunchy-from-grilling edges, the cheese was melted AS IT SHOULD BE, the patty thick and juicy, it didn't fall apart despite the amount of goodness in it so I could use my hands like I'm meant to. The burger alone wins half of the stars I'm giving this place, the other half being the amazingly friendly staff, and quick and prompt service. A complete mix of music jumping all over the decades. There is a big screen showing the videos too which can be quite entertaining. There is a massive bar in the middle of the bottom floor, so easy to get too. The only thing is it slightly dominates people at the bar and less dance space. Get there early if going on a Saturday night as it always gets packed and turns into a one in one out queue. The venue is only small, but makes a good atmosphere because of it. People will start to think I am obsessed with toilets in my reviews, but this has the best women's toilets I've seen in Brighton. Go have a look! I also ate a cooked breakfast here on a Sunday lunchtime and it was top notch. I expected it to be expensive but it wasn't. And to eat in such lush surroundings with very polite and smart staff made me feel like I was in a classy restaurant. Go and check it out if you get a chance is my advice.
