Low oak beams (really low I'm 6ft 3 and had to walk around looking pretty strange), open fire and these lovely little old fashioned booth style seats. The walls are adorned with old paintings and photographs of the pub which I always think shows real pride in your establishment. Local wise, there was an equal mix of young and old all enjoying themselves. Food choices are on blackboards around the pub which I much prefer to menus and looked fantastic - good old pub grub cooked freshly. On the bar, there was no Harveys but there was that dangerous liquid treat; Old Thumper. They had Horsham bitter too which was quite nice. They also organise beer tasting nights which sound really good. £30 which includes 15 beer samples, lunch and nibbles and a comprehensive bundle of tasting notes!

The Red Lion is situated in what was once the pre-Norman heart of Shoreham, before the port and town moved nearer the sea ('New Shoreham') in the 12th century. The river lies just a few yards away on the other side of the road, as does the original wooden Shoreham Toll Bridge, which dates from 1781 and is now a listed monument. However, what could be an idyllic spot is rather marred by the busy road junction in front of the pub and the noise of distant traffic on the new A27. The pub itself dates from the 16th century, and the old part has beams so low that anyone over 5ft 7in is going to have to get used to having to duck. There are two bar areas, a further room and two very cosy booths which sit four people (just about - you'll be very good friends by the end if you weren't at the start) alongside a passage off the main bar. There's an outdoor area at the front, which is fine if you don't mind the passing traffic. They serve a range of up to 5 real ales, which on my visit included two local brews, Adur brewery's 'Velocity', W J King & Co's Horsham Best Bitter, as well as Shepherd Neames' Kent Bitter. They have an extensive food menu of traditional pub grub, with a very wide range of starters, with grills, traditional meat and fish dishes, and salads. Vegetarians are less well catered for in the standard menu when it comes to main courses, although for £10 they sometimes do a mezze of starters which might suit two people. The pub attracts a wide range of visitors, especially at lunchtimes and weekends, but on quieter weekday and Sunday evenings it tends to attract mainly locals. The only downer for me was that the staff were a bit distracted on my visit - more interested in texting than serving. There's a small car park at the side (access from the rear) and the bus stop for the hourly 2A Shoreham-Steyning bus is located opposite the Amsterdam pub on the other side of the roundabout. The return stop is literally in front of the pub.

The comfortable leather seating inside adds to a really nice relaxed atmosphere all round. Great menu and an excellent wine list to support it. Other options include gammon, scampi, salmon and two vegetarian choices. I ate the veg lasagne, chips and salad and was stuffed. This pub is in the good beer guide, and rightly so with four or five handpumps. We all drank St Austel's Trelawny -a new one on me. Very friendly and accomodating staff. Booking recommended.

The chips were just fine, nothing special, and the mashed peas were lacking in flavor - I was hoping for a little more mint. We also had the crab cake - which was more like a potato pancake. I'm not sure I tasted any crab in it at all. But there were all kinds of veggies in there, and the breading was good on that as well. It tasted good - just didn't taste like crab. The hummus was delicious - the bread hot, and lots of flavor in the hummus. The staff was super friendly and sat us right away. It does get busy on a Saturday night, so be sure to get there a bit earlier (we arrived around 6:30) to get a seat. The wine selection is pretty good and reasonably priced. I did not drink beer, but they had a few craft beer options that I saw. Overall great place to spend some money on some delicious food with a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

Very popular with local people interested in promoting Shoreham. Serves a fantastic range of Thai food, which has proved very popular in Shoreham. Great staff, food and ale. My face was glowing red within minutes from the much welcomed heat. They had some nice music playing at an equally nice level (Van Morrison and plenty from the same era) and the bar staff were really nice and friendly. The decor was old fashioned but suited the pub and didn't at all look worn or tacky. There was a good selection of real ales and also a good few house double deals which you don't see much of these days. Sunday lunch is offered at £6.95 and during the rest of the week they sell pizzas from 6pm - 10pm. I could have sat here all day to be honest and just soaked up the atmosphere (and Harveys) as it really had a nice feel about the place and its friendly locals.

The main draw for outsiders is the choice of ales. As you enter, you are confronted with 11 - yes, eleven - handpumps, featuring 6 regular ales and up to five guests. It's like having an ale festival every day. Regulars include Harvey's Best, Abbott and Greene King IPA. On my last visit the guests included Hop Back Summer Lightning, Morland Original and Harvey's Christmas Ale (served in halves, as it's 8.1%). The beer has always been well-kept, and well served, and the staff are generally friendly and efficient, although a few times when it has been busy we've had to wait longer than I felt was reasonable. The interior is very traditional - dark wallpaper, prints, patterned carpets and lots of wood; but there's also a TV showing Sky Sports. If I'm honest, the interior is not the most atmospheric, but it's the beer that you come for. In the summer, there's a small beer garden at the front and a garden space at the rear. A note on catching trains: if you are heading towards London, Hove or Brighton, the platform is on the other side of the tracks from the pub. It can be accessed via a subway from the nearest platform, or by crossing the level crossing and walking straight on. But be warned: the barriers come down three minutes before the trains arrive, so you can't leave it to the last minute and saunter across the tracks. Many a drinker has been seen running like crazy along the platform, under the subway and back up again, only to miss the train. Not recommended after a few pints...

There's a nice beer garden at the front for use in good weather, although it gets busy pretty quickly in summer. A must-visit venue on any visit to Shoreham. PS Adhere to dmj1962's advice about leaving enough time to get the train, if you going toward London or Brighton, unless you want some frantic exercise going via the subway.
