The customary day off for chalet hosts in ski resorts everywhere means that those in catered accommodation must sort themselves out for an evening meal. We opted for Chez Kiki in Meribel as it came recommended by the holiday company and it sounded good from their description.
Roughly a 10 minute drive up the mountain road from the town centre, the restaurant looked quaint from the outside and when we entered saw the log burning fire and paraphernalia which gave it a real charm.
The maître d' was very friendly (though spoke no English, but that's more our failing for not speaking much French). We were seated promptly and were left to review the menus which unfortunately weren't particularly extensive with a double whammy of being very, very expensive. As we had no other options to go to we bit the bullet and ordered. It did take a while before we were brought any drinks or pain (bread) to nibble on but when the wine came it was very good indeed.
I ordered the Côte de Boeuf Maitre d'Hôtel which was roast beef to be shared (as there is 1kg of red meat to devour). It came served with frites, salade vert and Bernaise sauce. It. was. amazing. I don't often order meat to be cooked medium rare and had heard that the French preference is more on the 'rare side' of the spectrum, but I'm glad I did as it was juicy and delicious. This redeemed them for me and accompanied with a few glasses of Les Ormes' Bourgogne made for a terrific meal.
Though the final bill was hefty, everyone enjoyed what they ate and the service was friendly, if not as efficient as it could have been. Wow, I'm turning into a complete food snob, please send help. read more
