Chez Kiki - Les Ormes' Bourgogne

The customary day off for chalet hosts in ski resorts everywhere means that those in catered…read moreaccommodation must sort themselves out for an evening meal. We opted for Chez Kiki in Meribel as it came recommended by the holiday company and it sounded good from their description. Roughly a 10 minute drive up the mountain road from the town centre, the restaurant looked quaint from the outside and when we entered saw the log burning fire and paraphernalia which gave it a real charm. The maître d' was very friendly (though spoke no English, but that's more our failing for not speaking much French). We were seated promptly and were left to review the menus which unfortunately weren't particularly extensive with a double whammy of being very, very expensive. As we had no other options to go to we bit the bullet and ordered. It did take a while before we were brought any drinks or pain (bread) to nibble on but when the wine came it was very good indeed. I ordered the Côte de Boeuf Maitre d'Hôtel which was roast beef to be shared (as there is 1kg of red meat to devour). It came served with frites, salade vert and Bernaise sauce. It. was. amazing. I don't often order meat to be cooked medium rare and had heard that the French preference is more on the 'rare side' of the spectrum, but I'm glad I did as it was juicy and delicious. This redeemed them for me and accompanied with a few glasses of Les Ormes' Bourgogne made for a terrific meal. Though the final bill was hefty, everyone enjoyed what they ate and the service was friendly, if not as efficient as it could have been. Wow, I'm turning into a complete food snob, please send help.

I agree with Michael B - the food is wonderful, but VERY expensive. They kept saying yes and then rushing off to other tables. The bar downstairs is nice, and they have Sky Sports, which is generally what I require from a bar. Happy days

During a recent ski trip our group ended up coming here twice so we got to see both sides of its 'character' for want of a better word. On the first visit it was literally pulsating with bass, booze, table dancing and excess. The (ahem) 'VIP section' was filled with the spoiled brats and rich elite we can imagine love these kind of places. When someone orders a huge bottle of champagne or spirit it is not simply brought to them by hand, but placed in a large perspex box and slowly pulled over the crowds below via a zip-line with pink smoke billowing from its top. Cue multiple smart phones videoing the spectacle. Not wanting to sound like a complete party pooper I have to admit that the atmosphere was infectious (I may have danced a wee bit to the Europop that was blaring from the speakers). I did, however, feel like a fish out of water here. The second visit was at lunchtime which was much quieter and overall more palatable (atmosphere wise and food wise). Though the meal options are on the expensive side (but what isn't in Les 3 Vallées?) there were plenty of decent things to choose from in their slick, spacious and modern restaurant inside. The place was busy with families, ski schools and groups alike, a world away from the rowdy table dancing the previous afternoon. Tip: the easiest way to get to LFD from Meribel town is via the Saulire gondola lift, exiting at its first stop and then skiing/walking down the slope a short distance. Tip: there's a gift shop for LFD merchandise should you wish to buy a memento (that is, if you have any money left after eating/drinking here).

Had lunch here one day. The inside of this restaurant (and I mean RESTAURANT, not that self-served part) is gorgeous. Monstrous cheese are covering the walls up to the ceiling, and tables are covered with white table cloth. We were starving and started begun our meal with an assortment of cheese. As expected, it was as mouthwatering and beautifully served as only happens in France. The main course, a chicken split in two, was pretty good too, but in comparison to the exceptional cheese I was not blown away. Meal was around 60 Euro with a bottle of wine and two beers for our company. Next day I was back, I chose only cheese, bread and wine. Mm.

Once we finished our drinks, we were shown to our table in the charming old building, and proceeded to have a wonderful lunch.   We found the service impeccable and the whole experience something you simply can't find at a ski resort in Colorado, where we saved one place (Alpino Vino in Telluride).  Prices match the experience at Clos Bernard; expect to pay upwards of 100 Euros per person for lunch, but the food and, more so, the experience seem worth it to me. For that price and a touch more, we had a lovely bottle of Burgundy recommended by the sommelier, drinks for the girls who shared a steak and fries, while my wife and I had a massive raclette, and we finished off with desserts for 2. I would highly recommend Le Clos Bernard, based on my experience and some other reviews I read online. Aim for an earlier reservation to limit the variables on how long lunch can take for those enjoying themselves in front of you.  Also, be prepared for a bit of a ski out after lunch. I was either incompetent or the internet reviews are delusional about the 30-second uphill.
