Located along the river, this smallish restaurant is a great place to stop for a beer or glass of wine and have some really good food.
We arrived early around 8:30pm (this place doesn't really get going until around 10pm) so we had the place pretty much to ourselves. We were seated on the patio and proceeded to be told what the specials were and since my French is a little rusty, we were helped by the server to identify what we wanted to eat.
We started with a couple of first courses, the grilled octopus which was perfection on a plate and the sliced ham plate. Both were great and allowed us to taste a couple of the specialties of the area.
I went with the shrimp and risotto and my friend had the fish special of the day which was hake and both were quite good.
They also have plate specials which include a small salad, your choice of meat or seafood and potatoes. Definitely a large portion for the amount of money that they charge.
And I would be remiss not to mention the excellent service that we received here. The patience of our server as I stumbled to try to remember my French (I was here on my first night in town so it took me a couple of days to remember some of the words) but it didn't matter. I think our server would have read the entire menu to me if I had asked! My beer was rarely empty and the bread basket refilled throughout the night. And in true European style, I think we could have stayed there all night but at some point, I did have to ask for the bill.
This area along the river has many small restaurants to eat at. Chez Gilles was recommended to us by a friend of mine and it was an excellent choice! The people watching along the river is great as there is always a constant moving stream of humanity which gives an energy to the area. And on the night we were there, there had been a football game at the nearby stadium so everyone was in the mood to have a great time!
Dinner for two with drinks ran about 81E which was reasonable given the large portions of food and the excellent service that we received. We sent several people to eat here and they were also impressed with the place. Check it out! read more
