Just returned from CFD (7/22/13) and after having read a lot of hype about the event before we left, other than the Alan Jackson concert (terrific!), we left Cheyenne less than impressed.
We have attended rodeos/state/county fairs in ND, SD, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Arizona, Nevada and California. We have attend PBR events in Albuquerque, Springfield, Tulsa and have attended the world finals in Las Vegas for the past 4 years. CFD is BY FAR wayyyyyy at the bottom of the list.
1. Not enough bathrooms and the few available were old, rundown, and dirty. Paint is pretty cheap. Replace a few toilet seats, replace toilet partitions that have holes drilled in them and replace locks, clean the bathrooms on a regular basis. That would be a start.
2. Shoddy, expensive souvenirs (can't call them arts and crafts; no art, no craft) in the exhibit hall and under the grandstands. Certainly not anything interesting unless you were specifically looking for a "I'm Grandma's Little Cowboy" t-shirt. Lots of them.
3. Ugly, grim "arena". More like a parking lot from an abandoned K-Mart covered with dirt and converted into a "rodeo arena". I've seen nicer arenas in farmers fields at county fairs. One half of the "race track" runs BEHIND a grandstand. I guess that is why they will sell you a ticket BEHIND a support beam for $58.00. You can also tell the announcer that the show was on the arena floor, not on his mispronounced dialogue or the cute kiddies racing on broomstick "ponies". He actually missed some pretty good action while he went on and on with some visiting politico.
4. A midway that bored three 12 year old boys after 30 minutes. Nuff' said.
5. Food. No variety. Same old turkey legs, corn dogs, burgers, hotdogs. If you want to see a good variety of tasty, affordable food, try looking at the Texas State Fair. To be honest I did have a corn dog.....OK, two. Pretty good.
6. Drink (adult): Coors, maybe Bud. didn't notice, Hard Cider, Blue Moon, Fat Tire all in cans. No tap, no wine, no mixed drinks. More beer variety at Rockies games and it's named COORS FIELD!
7. Probably can't enforce this but maybe a little education will help. Post some signs that says, "It is NEVER OK to SPIT on the ground in public". I understand that some people like to enjoy a chew. No problem. I do not however, want to navigate around their dip spit laying on the ground in almost in every concession line.
8. If this is the "Grandaddy of them all", I think Grandma might be looking for a new cowboy.
In general, except for the concert, CFD was a massive disappointment. Cheyenne should thank God that there are no Indian Casinos within a hundred miles that offer top entertainment. Otherwise, they would have nothing. read more
