Chevron is fine. The Subway in it is terrible. Super slow, not that clean. Don't recommend.

Olney Saloon & General Store - The Big O

Olney Saloon & General Store - The Big O

I've been here several times and it's had some nice improvements lately. I love to see an owner put…read moremoney back into a business before they absolutely have to. The ambience has improved every time I've been there. Always great service from a friendly server. However the prices are getting a bit steep by any standard. The list... One soda 4$ One coffee 4$ no refill offered Chili fries were 12 or 14 dollars (can't exactly remember but def high) 2 burgers were high priced but not budget braking. The chili fries were small at best with probably 1/3c. of chili on it. Black coffee 4$? A pint of cola 4$? Wtf! Then on the way out I noticed a $1.99 mystery charge that I inquired about. It was a credit card fee that I didn't see any sign about (could have been posted somewhere but nowhere I was close to). Lunch for 2 was almost $60 without alcohol. I think this place has gotten a bit big for their britches and the appeal that I once felt for this place is now gone. You can overcharge for amazing food. You can also overcharge for generous portions. But you have to give something more than just a slightly quirky location. Better food isn't that hard to find in Astoria and sadly I've given them the last of my money.

So, let me start off by saying the saloon is really cute and all of the decorations were…read morewell-intentioned. Great atmosphere and vibes for a small logging community. The trouble is that this place is extremely over-hyped! We had high hopes based on other Yelp reviews and a feature on Grant's Getaways. The food was a huge letdown! Burgers are frozen pucks with zero flavor and not even seasoned to help make them more appetizing. Way too much sauce, another attempt to hide the poor quality beef patty, so extremely messy. Also, you can order an appetizer of fries for $8 but burgers don't come with them. The burgers lacked any beefy flavor and I felt like I was eating cardboard. For the price, I expected a hand-pressed beef patty made with higher quality beef. $48 for 2 burgers, order of fries, 2 beers. A bit much. Would I return? Not likely. Was it worth the drive from Fort Stevens State Park? No. Would I recommend this place to someone else? Nope!

A small convenience store at the corner of 4th and Adams. I've never been sure whether the place…read moreis called "Adams Market" because it's at the intersection with Adams, is called "Adam's Market" after someone named Adam, or is called "Adam Market" as it's sometimes rendered in other online results. The great thing about this place is the owner, who is jolly and sarcastic and funny, although his wit does tend to run a little absurd and not a little dry. Almost as great, though, is the selection of Middle Eastern foods. It's a great place to stock up on boxes of mahmouls for cheap, or to get tins of stuffed grape leaves, which are a vastly better snack than the paltry selection of heavily-processed junk food. Fresh, but limited, but huge, baklavah. The real wonder, though, is a small row of sodas in the back. Not the fancy burdock-and-ass English stuff, but the selection of Lebanese fruit sodas by Kazouza, the best of which is the watermelon. None of them are HFCS-loaded crap, but the watermelon nonetheless captures the fanciful watermelon flavor of something like a Jolly Rancher without being too cloying (at least, for the first few bottles.) It's so wonderful. Like, it completely changed my view of carbonated beverages. It's also a reliable place to get ayran, which is good when the Kazouza gets too sickly-sweet. Also, the brand of ayran they stock is also very useful as a yogurt culture, and at least with the milk from my goats that I tried it with, it resulted in some absurdly-thick and wonderful stuff. Some of the staff other than the owner can be a bit grumpy or difficult, and some of them are quite sweet and outgoing. Still, it's hard to fault the gruff ones. It's the most centrally-located and only late-night convenience store in downtown Olympia. It's a great place to rub shoulders with people who are drunk at noon and people who are far gone in the middle of the night. It really functions as Olympia's only Middle Eastern market. International Spice and Halal used to carry much of the same stuff, and since it closed and its owner moved on to other things, this is the best place to go. And it does a good job of that, while also doing a good job of being a convenience store. A very cool place. Near and dear to my heart.
