This place deserves 4 stars simply because it is the very definition of a literal "in the middle of…read morenowhere" gas station. The Bakersfield Exxon saved our butts on a road trip through Texas. If it hadn't been for this little outpost, we likely would've been sitting on the side of the road with an empty rental car tank. Obviously this gas station is a welcome sight for many weary road trippers, because there was a line to fill up our car! The road through central Texas is bleak and desolate, with very few places to stop. We started sweating it 30 minutes before we found this gasoline savior. Minus a star because fuel prices were really high! I guess it's justified, but nobody enjoys paying almost a dollar more than comparable gas prices elsewhere. There's a very small convenience store attached that sells snacks and drinks. Even when it looks closed, do not fret - the gas pumps are open 24/7. I'll bet you ten bucks that if you are driving this route through Texas, you will need to stop here to refuel. It's some sort of rite of passage for drivers.

The drink machine was sticky enough to trap a small animal, and I'm pretty sure my shoes gained weight walking past it. Step outside and it didn't get much better. Trash overflowing everywhere like the cans just threw their hands up. And the dog park -- which should be amazing -- was a minefield of dog turds from every breed known to mankind. I was turning south into a little populated area of Texas and didn't know what the supply of gasoline or prices would look like. so I pulled into a place ive visited in other areas before, The Flying J, to fill up. I also realized a few beverages id brought from home required a bottle opener. So while the truck filled, I went inside to get a couple of things and see if they had an opener. After looking and not finding I ask the counter clerk for assistance and she looked at the other clerk like...whats a bottle opener. She then turned to me and said if we have one it would be right down that way. Waving over towards the taquito and hot dog roller isle! AS i pursued the instant-relief headache packets and Tums, there it was! A tray is full of back scratchers. An aside. I've had an itch in the middle of my back i can't rtelescoping extension I thought..Sold. Then I noticed the center of the monster's hand was V-shaped. No, I thought! Long story…read moreshort, we were doing the Jeep trail out in big bend National park of May 2022 when a huge hail & thunderstorm came out of nowhere and flooded the area. Including us - right in the middle of big bend National park. After 12 hours of waiting, the park rangers finally found US but our Jeep was still stuck. After hours of searching companies that could tow jeeps off of off road trails we FINALLY came across Sheffield and the god send Mike himself! Y'all this man is a Jeep towing boss - he towed his own tricked out Jeep on the wrecker, picked us up from Terlingua Ranch (also highly recommend) drove an hour and half to the park where our Jeep was stuck, off loaded his Jeep, drove down to the trail, hooked our Jeep baby up to his Jeep baby (after replacing the tire from the accident), & then loaded BOTH Jeeps back up to save the day! Highly highly recommend Sheffield and Mike and his family! We even had an opportunity to speak to his wife who dispatches for him! Lovely lovely family and the best rescue team out in west Texas! Thank y'all so much for rescue!

It took a while to get to us, since he was coming from Marathon, but he was really friendly and a genuinely nice guy. Because we had AAA, the tow into Alpine didn't cost anything. We were driving a VW Jetta, which is apparently an incredibly difficult car to get fixed in smaller towns, but he called around to a few places on his phone for us and found one of his friends in Alpine who had a garage and was willing to work on our car. If you have to break down in the middle of the desert, Sixto is the man to call.
