A hard name to remember correctly but a great place to wine taste! I love that this wine tasting room also includes cool animal and plant-inspired art on the walls that you can purchase. Alex poured our tasting which was great and informative. The wines are delicious and well-priced (lots of options around $30/bottle). My dad is a member so our tasting was free and we purchased lots of wine. I'm a big red wine fan and liked all of their reds - their grenache is one of my dad's favorites. Really enjoyed the wine tasting here! Cheesebro is in a little strip of tasting rooms in a quaint quiet little area of Carmel valley. They have a unique variety of reds & whites that were all very enjoyable! The wine tasting is also a great value for $15! The gentleman pouring the wines was very knowledgeable about the wines & super friendly (and thanks to his tip we went to pacific grove and got some of the best pictures of the water!). I took the Wine Trolley with my family, and Chesebro was one of the tasting rooms to choose from. Something I noticed at Chesebro was that it had the most tastings out of all the tasting rooms we walked into. Chesebro offered 6 different samples of wine, and we got a bonus 7th sample! Because basically everyone in our large party loves cider, the sommelier opened their cider for us to try even though it wasn't featured on the menu. Of course, we bought a bottle since it was really good! It wasn't as sweet compared to commercial brand ciders I'm used to, but it was crisp and flavorful. Customer service was great. The sommelier was a very nice guy and knowledgeable not only about their diverse menu but also the history of the Chesebro winery. Lastly, I loved how beautiful the space was. I felt that everything had some intimate meaning and was placed with intention. For example, I loved the bar's wood counter top that had a natural wood rot shaped like a heart. If I remember the story correctly (granted I was pretty buzzed at this point), the tree came from a beautiful dying oak tree in the owners' backyard. There was a nice lounge area with couches in the middle of the room. I also felt like I was walking around in an intimate art gallery. Paintings and other art from local artists' were exhibited everywhere, and even the owner's wife had some of her own work of art on display. read more

What a fun place to visit! If you like hospitable staff who are knowledgeable on their wines, generous pours in your glass, and winemakers who are truly excited about their creations, you'll love Chesebro. I enjoyed chatting with the staff about the terroir of the vineyards where the grapes were grown and how the various elements shaped the character of each wine they poured. Unlike some of the tasting rooms where the atmosphere is more of an "attendant" who just pours you four sips of different wine and then vanishes behind a counter, Chesebro staff seem not just knowledgeable--but absolutely passionate about their products! Chesebro was a pleasant surprise. After visiting Dawn's, we wanted to try out another of the tasting rooms along the same strip. There were about 3 others to choose from, and Chesebro seemed to have the best things being Yelped about it. The $6 tasting fee gets you 7 wines, which is a pretty excellent price -- especially when you use the Yelp check in offer and then get to taste for free! The wines themselves are also relatively cheap, being around the $20 price range. And really, they're good wines. Because the tasting fee was waived, and because the wines were actually pretty great, I ended up buying a bottle of the Sauvignon Blanc for my dad. While you're wine tasting at Chesebro, they also have a mini art exhibit for local artists that they change our regularly. A first-time visit to the tasting room of Chesebro Wines can prompt a range of reactions, but to me at least, it's rare proof of truth in advertising. Their extremely concise Yelp business listing states the simple mission of crafting "limited lots of high quality wines at reasonable prices," and that's exactly what they do here, since opening in 2011. The question, then, is how? Reasonable prices means wines under $15 that are sourced from single vineyards and expertly made without unnecessary winemaking manipulation that would detract from the varietal character of the grapes used. White wines like Sauvignon Blanc, Vermentino, Albarino, Roussanne, and Chardonnay. It also means red wines under $30 from estate vineyards in Arroyo Seco and the Carmel Valley highlands that are fermented naturally, aged in oak, and bottled unfiltered when the vintage is ready for enjoyable consumption. Wines like Pinot Noir, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre. Limited lots mean case productions of 200 or less, sometimes wines from a single oak barrel, wines that are partially subsidized by the sale of vineyard grapes to other area growers, who respect the quality and consistency of the fruit that Chesebro and its partners tend, esp. the Cedar Lane vineyard in Arroyo Seco. High quality means in some cases Rhone grape varietals grown in stingy, stony mountain soils that result in extremely low yields of rich, vibrant, expressive fruit. The tasting room is located in the middle of a wide range of Carmel Valley restaurants, cafes, shops, and other winery tasting rooms, so you can easily combine a Chesebro stop with other activities. The tasting room staff are very knowledgeable and easy-going and know the area well enough to make recommendations. Often, small boutique wineries are prestige projects of the idle rich who charge premium prices for ordinary wines. This is definitely NOT the case here. Small though Chesebro's annual wine output may be, it deserves a second look if you're a fan of Central Coast California wines, particularly for the Arroyo Seco whites and Pinots, and for the CM Ranch and Cedar Lane Rhone blends. Grenache. It is one of those incredibly versatile and deeply delicious grape varietals that not everyone associates with fine wine. Or with Monterey County, where Chardonnay and Pinot Noir more typically rule the roost in places like the Santa Lucia Highlands. But given the right wine-making touch Grenache can become the basis for wonderful summertime pink wines. It also can be combined with Syrah or Mourvedre to make barrel-aged beauties that pair extremely well with grilled fare; or when vinified as a single varietal, 100% Grenache wine, as is done in some parts of Spain (like Priorat) it is perfect with small plates and tapas. The cool thing about Chesebro (this is the last name of the winemaker, Mark C.) is that you can find all three of these styles for sale at their intimate and fun-filled Carmel Valley tasting room. There is a very fresh and surprisingly rich Grenache rosé, which sometimes is on sale for $10/bottle if purchased as a case. There is also a superb single-barrel series of 100% Grenache, one from the Cedar Lane vineyard in Arroyo Seco, the other from the winemaker's home ranch in the Carmel Valley highlands (west of town, near the Tassajara Road intersection). And there are wines like Las Arenas that blend roughly 2/3 Grenache with 1/3 Syrah and that are extremely attractive and well priced around $25 ($20 for wine club members who opt to receive 12 bottles of wine twice annually). For such a small-scale winemaking operation, Chesebro has a large range of varieties and styles to choose from, 6-7 of which you'll likely get to taste if you visit, for $10/person (waived with any 2 bottle purchase). Pinot Noir. Late harvest Sauvignon Blanc. Vermentino. Chardonnay. Even hard cider. But for me at least, it was the Cedar Lane vineyard Grenache wines that stole the show - rosé, single barrel, and the Las Arenas GS blend. Of course, I am also a huge fan of the Le Mistral wines currently being made by Chesebro's Carmel Valley neighbor, Folktale Winery, both their 100% Grenache and their "Joseph's Blend" Grenache/Syrah homage to iconic winemaker, Joseph Phelps, who first developed Le Mistral into a famous Rhone red wine site of distinction. What's interesting about Rhone reds grown in Arroyo Seco is that, compared to other spots in California, it's actually fairly cool here due to fog and wind from Monterey Bay that envelops portions of the Salinas Valley most of the year. While the hills and mountains often bake in bright sunshine, it is the lower elevation soils that are covered by a cooling cloud of fog, which adds some real complexity to the Grenache, while also allowing it to ripen fully. The results, especially when made well with barrel aging and unfiltered bottling, can be wonderful. And that is very much the case here. So, the next time you're in Carmel Valley, stop at Chesebro on a "Grenache pilgrimage." You may just leave as impressed as I was! read more

Still the best & friendliest tasting room in the valley, with the most unique wines! From crisp Albarino to lush Roussane, Grenache rose or a smokey Pinot Noir, Chesebro's wines are always worth taking home and so well priced (in the $20-30 range). Gotta love a winery that sounds like it's named after one of Keanu Reeves' favorite snacks: "Cheese, bro" Alyssa was the HBIC that day, taking us through several different varietals. My personal favorite was the rose... But when isn't it the rose my favorite? Add some sparkle into that bottle and you'd have a customer for life! But until then, a bottle or two at $16 each isn't too shabby. There are many tasting rooms in Carmel Valley, which makes it difficult to pick one unless you have an experienced guide leading the way. Unique varietals.. very good selection. We started with a Vermentino, which I had never tried but, instantly loved. It was light, semi sweet and smooth. The Roussanne had the brown sugary fragrance that I love about roussanne, but the taste was much more mellow than it smelled. I can't recall details of the taste..because this was when I was getting a good buzz and when I should have started tasting instead of actually drinking. Great tasting, the wine chick was super knowledgeable and approachable and she tasted every single bottle before pouring for us, which was impressive, as most people just pour and don't really care about what they are about to present. What I liked about this establishment is they put the wine list and tasting fee on the window. So walking by you could judge if you like those types of wine and want to try them. Also the tasting fee went towards your bottle of wine if you bought two bottles which I thought was pretty good. Just visited this tasting room and I could not be more impressed with Chesebro wines! Ross poured our wine and took us through a few whites and reds. Many wines are fabulous blends of one or two grapes - each taste was memorable. Ross did a fantastic job educating us not only about wines, but also wine storage, aeration, etc. Having tasted many times in Napa/Sonoma, I am proud to say that Ross turned this experience into a memory. I am a huge fan of small production wines - and Chesebro is the exact reason why. A lot of attention is paid to these wines - also, all of the grapes from from their vineyards. Very disappointed. Planned a day of wine tastings throughout Carmel Valley for guests that travelled from Philadelphia. They wanted to specifically come here to do a tasting and purchase wine for a party on Saturday. Arrived at 5:15 and was met by a locked door. When we knocked the woman behind the counter just shook her head and waved. Very rude and disappointing despite the web and sign advertising they were open until 6. We have been members at Chesebro for a few years now, and it's my favorite winery! We aren't local, we are in Morgan Hill, so we came across it randomly during the Wine Trolley. We went on the trolley with no intention of joining any clubs since we are members at a MH winery, and we aren't close to Carmel Valley. After our experience at Chesebro, we couldn't say no! The wines we tasted were great, and their cider was a huge hit! We ended up joining because we could see ourselves coming every few months for pick ups and just enjoy the area. It makes for a great day date. All that being said, it is really the customer service that makes this place so special! There are tons of places in CA to get great wine, but the way we have been taken care of by Alex Lallos over the years is remarkable. He's very responsive if I have questions, he helped me figure out how I missed a shipment when my credit card was compromised and I forgot to update my info online, and then when all my wine came in, he threw in some extra bottles for my struggles! That's just one example of how he has gone above and beyond! They just really seem to care about their members, and that is hard to find these days. I truly appreciate this spot and highly recommend trying it, and even joining! You won't be disappointed! read more

This place makes me very annoyed about the various Monterey County/ Carmel Valley wine related websites.... mainly because they had NO indication that this place existed. Seriously... apparently half a dozen places have opened up in Carmel Valley and none of them were listed anywhere. So having discovered that there are a lot of new wineries in Carmel Valley, went in to taste here towards the end of the day. Well, actually we went in because of something hanging in the front window but then I saw the list of wines and decided to alter plans and taste here... a decision I am very glad I made. Lots of good wines and some rather obscure varietals including at least one that I hadn't heard of [a situation I don't encounter all that often these days]. Their red wines are good, but the white wines are amazing.... seriously... try the Vermentino and really really try the Roussanne. Plus, they have a late harvest Sauvignon Blanc. Plus, the prices are fairly cheap... mainly $15-25. Not only were the wines good, but the person minding shop that day was friendly, informative, and helpful [putting together two shipping boxes for us]. This was the best experience on our day of tasting and the only place where we bought bottles after tasting. They offer a very unique set of varietals, including Vermentino, Roussanne, and Las Arenas (a Grenache/Syrah blend). It cost $6 to taste 6 wines, and the wines themselves were very reasonably priced (most less than $20). Both workers who were pouring were very friendly and knowledgeable. The art in the tasting room was also a nice touch. We ended up buying a bottle of the Las Arenas and Syrah for less than $40. Quite a steal! read more
