The women's restrooms had a terrible odor, less than half the stalls were in functioning order, not to mention 3 stalls when you opened will clogged and filled with someone's business which was truly disgusting. We stopped by this place for lunch as we were heading to DC. Inside was clean and there were various restaurants to choose from like Earl of Sandwich, Wendy's, KFC, Pizza Hut, etc. We choose Earl of Sandwich as the healthier option. We waited in line for a bit and ordered 4 sandwiches: vegggie sandwich for my mom, 2 Chipotle chicken avocado sandwiches for my dad and I and my husband got the Original. I liked my sandwich. This is a Maryland service plaza on I-95 between Baltimore and the Delaware border. I-95 is not a controlled access roadway, so this is the kind of plaza you would see on a turnpike. One stop, lots of options. Pizza, burgers, coffee, chicken, sandwiches, convenience store, gas station and EV chargers. It's all here in this one stop. Plenty of parking though not much for shade. If it's a hot and sunny day, you're not going to have a comfortable time taking a 20 minute snooze. Lots of lights but it is very transient traffic. I had not stopped at the Chesapeake House since its 2014 renovation, until summer 2025, when we had to drive from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C., our flight being rebooked to the former after cancellation to the latter. I jot this note to express my surprise at a great renovation of the exterior. I must have visited this facility a couple of dozen times between 1984 and 1988, when I was quite a bit younger than half the age I am now (indeed, two thirds further life experience had elapsed between 1984 and 2014, as I play with the math). I always wanted to be an architect. I continue to believe design can make us better, as individuals and as communities; or, it can make us worse. Our built spaces can promote more positive feelings, or the opposite. A simple example would be offices that allow greater interaction among colleagues versus those that do not. In this instance, the clean contemporary aesthetic of the facade gave me hope. Once I was inside, I was concerned that the open floor plan would present the same issue as the shared space, with few walls and fewer windows of the elementary schools newly built when I was a kid, the few walls leading to excessive noise and the fewer windows a function of the energy crisis. On the whole, however, the new Chesapeake House is a tasteful improvement of what I recall of the preceding structure. That was garish. Yet I realize in another generation, what appeals to me might seem fusty or simply of its time. I commend the firm, Ayers Saint Gross. They also have installed a memorial honoring women who have served in the US military. That is great. It was just before the Chesapeake House opened, in 2013, that the combat exclusion was formally rescinded. Among the most persuasive arguments against the gender discrimination was an invocation of practice, which sometimes carries the day in an assist to principal. Women were already on the battlefield, exposed to the same risks to life and limb, but the technical titles for their roles precluded them from the same career advancement. read more

It's a rest stop on 95. You need it when you need it. You don't want to stop but you either have to get coffee, go to the bathroom, or fill up the tank of gas or charge your electric car. It is a necessary place. Not the cleanest, but it is better than some options on the road to NYC. I came here to charge my car and use the restrooms. The inside has a ton of light because of the large windows that is here, but it can make this place seem larger. There is always someone cleaning here, but too many people come through so it is never really clean. It is tolerable, but again, you need this place. read more

A great place to stop for a break driving in I95! The rest stop has plenty of parking as well as electric car chargers. The rest stop and bathrooms were clean. Lots of seating is available. Several fast food options, Starbucks and a grab and go section gave lots of options. Souvenirs are also available. The best part is a little section with all Maryland products. They had samples of different varieties did ciders and jellies. Great if you forgot to o'clock up a souvenir on your trip. I would recommend both the cider and the jelly! read more

"Are we there yet?" Great travel pit stop! This rest stop had everything! Several restaurants, and organic shop, a convenience store, massage chairs to rest your achy bones, decent restrooms, lots of seating and parking, a coffee shop, a newsstand, maps, brochures, gasoline and more. But one of my fav things to find at one of these roadside hubs is a penny press! My kids and I love to put a penny in the slot, along with the 50 cents charge, then turn that crank to get a souvenir of where we've been! Silly but fun! I have tons of pressed pennies! For a cheap thrill, this just makes "cents"!! We grabbed sandwiches at Earl of Sandwich and what a perfect choice. The sandwiches are made fresh, they have big portions, the price is right too! While traveling I tend to shy away from greasy fast foods, but if that's your thing, they have a Wendy's, Pizza Hut and a KFC. Grab a cup of java at Peet's Coffee for that last home stretch! The organic deli was a welcome sight. It was nice to have various shops to appeal to diverse travelers. The beet chips looked appealing and the natural foods looked delicious! I picked up some items at the convenience store as well, the lines moved fast and the service was friendly and courteous. They offered toys and games for kids to keep them occupied on those long trips! They sold lots of snacks, fruits, beverages and grab-and-go prepared foods. Plus they had various sundries that come in handy while traveling: gum, OTC pain meds and first aid items, sunglasses, tissues, etc. The restrooms were pretty clean for the amount of traffic they get. I was impressed by the many employees cleaning, clearing tables, emptying bins and restocking. Lots of neon vested busy bees! Good job! Because I used a diaper pad and 2. The bathrooms were clean) so that alone is good enough for four stars. Stopped here on my way to Atlantic City for the annual Teddy Stacks-Gerry Sip Birthday Weekend. This is one of the several rest stops on I-95 on the way north, and it has a gas station, as well as a large building that has rest rooms, and several food stores as well. In terms of accessibility, it is very good, with the gas station located on one end of the property with a convenience store. I would say this is good in terms of not bottlenecking traffic and parking, but if you are looking to get convenience store items, you have to hit both. In terms of the large building with the food, there is a KFC/Pizza Hut, Sandwich shop, and sub station as well. The areas are well-handled and the whole place is lit by natural sunlight. There is also an outdoor seating area, Bathrooms are also very clean. I did just about everything here in a short period of time to keep things moving. read more

This LEED Silver-certified rest stop off the JFK Memorial Highway offers variety of eats, souvenir-shopping, and fueling/electric vehicle charging stations. Definitely a busy stop for road trippers and travelers, the bathrooms could be more cleaner. It gets the job done! It's nothing compared to the Maryland house, but it has all the creature comforts. I normally stop at the MH but I didn't really feel like parking far and walking up 23 steps. So I drove the extra miles to the Chesapeake House. The Chesapeake House has both men and women bathroom facilities with plenty of food options. I think I saw BK and Wendy's. Nothing for me because I don't eat fast food. They may have had a sandwich shop or news store. I was in and out. I saw auntie Anne's and some generic coffee place. Finally, a modernized rest room facility like it 2016 on I95. The rest rooms are clean. Better than stopping at one of the bathrooms at the gas stations. What a relief? No funky smell nor washing your shoes. Yikes. This is a busy rest stop and many tourist and travelers stop here. Be careful driving in. There was a personnel directing traffic cause it was so congested. People are in such a rush and drive like maniacs here. Take it easy peeps and slow down. As you look at the place from the outside from the parking lot, I feel as if I am going to the airport. The building is modern and contemporary. Many eateries all lined up like at a mall-food court or airport. Let me tell you the food is totally overpriced. Sandwiches are the same at Peet's and the other stores. The sliced avocado was already brown- yuck. I only stopped there to use the bathroom which were clean and there were so many stalls. Then we went elsewhere for late lunch/dinner. Like many other rest stops, Chesapeake House does the trick when you don't feel like veering off the highway for a quick meal or restroom. CH looks renovated and fresh. It also can look crowded during peak times. I traveled through on my way from NJ to DC. It was on the first leg of the drive and not too far over the Delaware border. You'll probably find a fast food spot to grab a bite. I chose Earl of Sandwich mostly because I had not heard of it before and also wanted a sandwich. Wendy's is next door but the line was pretty nutty. Their parking lot is easy to navigate but can be busy. Just be extra careful entering/exiting in case there's some weary pedestrians around. read more

This is one of my Top 3 places to stop in my (sadly) all-too-frequent drive between Boston and Washington DC: lots of parking that actually makes sense (the traffic patterns in some rest areas are complicated), ladies room is clean (and has paper towels, I hate those blower things), and the convenience store has loads of things and one of the sweetest ladies ever working there (Virginia J). Virginia rules that place in her sweet grandmotherly way! What a terrible experience coming here. Bought a lottery ticket and won $20, but I couldn't cash it in until 9... it was 8:30 when I went. I also bought a sandwich and bottled water in the convenience store because nothing else was open.. come to $11... I get these places charge more for the convenience of being right there on the highwat, but the sandwich was awful. Dry and the bread crumbled. Almost stale... and there was no bacon in the BLT sandwich. ??? No effort. Not to mention it took 10 minutes to just purchase my items, the machines were slow and took forever to process my payment. It even charged me twice! The Chesapeake House Travel Plaza has really gone downhill in the last couple of years. It used to be a decent place to stop to fuel up the car and access food, coffee, etc. Now it's really rundown, dirty, and poorly maintained.
