Cherry Reds is one of my favourite places to hang out in Birmingham right now. Really conveniently located at the heart of bustling John Bright St., it is a lovely place to drop in, pretty much any time of the day, with a really pleasant atmosphere. For an evening drink Cherry Reds is great for a group visit of more quiet affair; I've been for birthday celebrations and for quiet evenings with friends over Trivial Pursuit and a pint (there are piles of board games dotted around). It boasts an international selection of beers to suit all tastes. I usually look to the handy board of guest beers for inspiration and I've had some very nice and unusual beers from here. Food-wise, I've dropped in for breakfast several times. For just £6 you can get your chops around a generous Hearty English Breakfast (or vegetarian equivalent). Always filling, always delicious. I'm yet to try the rest of the menu but the cakes at the downstairs bar look pretty mouthwatering! read more

Woo! Cherry Reds is one on my favourite venues in the city. Jen expanded her small café/bar business from the first venue in Kings Heath by bringing her unique quirky brand to the city centre a couple of years ago. The opening of Cherry Reds, firmly positioned John Bright Street as the centre of Birmingham's recently established 'Craft Beer Quarter'. Cherry Reds KH was always a favourite to visit of mine for Schneider Weisse on draught, (my absolute favourite weissen) that isn't often seen on tap in Brum. This is a reason to visit either Cherry Reds on it's own. Coupled with a large fridge fully stocked with old world and new world beers of all styles, a changing selection on tap and some great food, you really can't go wrong! The décor is probably classed as 'shabby chic', with a random, but well chosen mix of second hand furniture. The furniture has an aesthetic that reminds one of a visiting a relatives house as a child. The menu is small but perfectly formed, with a enough to please carnivores, vegetarians, and vegans. I believe they produce all of the food homemade as much as possible; the homemade nachos are fantastic, as are the cupcakes! I like the place so much that I even held my daughter's birthday party there. Apparently it was their first children's party and perhaps I set a trend as my of the parent's complemented me on the choice of venue. I highly recommend Cherry Reds! read more

This place pulls off the vibe of being a proper pub/ bar and cafe well. Therefore it reminds me of my trip to Berlin a little, so to me Cherry Reds has a bit of a continental feel! This could also be due to the numerous continental ales and beers they stock, both on tap and in bottles. If you like your ale, you'll be spoilt for choice in this place. They do really nice and somewhat unusual coffees/ hot chocolate etc- including Cherry Hot Chocolate would you believe!? (Complete with a mountain of marshmallows and cream of course.) This is one of the nicer places in the city to grab a really good hot drink later in the evening. I've yet to try the food personally, but have been assured that it's definitely worth a try. What a fabulous little venue this is!! It's such a nice little place to hang out with friends, chill out, relax and unwind after a long day, or simply have a bite to eat whilst shopping. It's quirky and it boasts a very pleasant atmopshere that you can guarantee is more homely than Homebase. What a great place for Birmingham to have :) read more

Stuck in New Street station with time to kill, between transportation? See that Starbucks, no don't stop, keep going, straight passed it. See that Costa coffee? Blank it, don't even look at it, keep on walking, head for the Hill St exit, look for the Railway pub\Brew Dog and right next door you will find a gem of a place to while away any time that requires whiling. We went for a spicy Mexican hot chocolate to accompany the whiling and to warm the cockles, but they serve alcoholic beverages and food as well. read more

Love this quirky cafe! Perfect place to just chill out with friends, amazing food! They do the best Pancakes (with Nutella,banana,syrup and ice cream). Brilliant space up stairs with board games on the side for customers to use.It gets busy quite quickly, but it's understandable when you have their food! This was my second visit here which Shantell S and we specifically came to order food - the falafel, halloumi and roasted veg burger. We'd seen it on the menu before and made a plan to visit again. We arrived on a Saturday and unsurprisingly the place was busy. We found a seat upstairs by the board games and looked at the menu even though we both knew what we wanted. Top bar was closed so I walked downstairs and ordered for the both of us, we had some smoothies each - passion fruit and bumbleberry. I thought at first they would be freshly made and was a little disappointed to be handed a bottle and a glass of ice. There was a 30 minute wait for food which was expected. When it arrived, admittedly we were both excited for it. We paid the extra for the sweet potato wedges which are just sooo good. The burger itself was a bit of a disappointment sadly. It was presented well and it looked good but it's let down was ironically the main contender of the dish - the falafel. That thing is huge, to big in fact. It's like someone has taken a normal sized burger (bun and all) and shoved between the bread, cheese and so on. It was too dry, I don't know if they make the falafels there but maybe have a pocket of sauce inside? Or even on the bun, the other veggie burger that's sans halloumi comes with salsa which would be a great touch. By know means have I written off the place, I just won't be having the falafel burger again. Probably try one of the meat based burgers and add some halloumi. Because of the mushroom and halloumi sandwich I had prior to this visit it still gets 4 stars. I feel you can't base your entire review of a place on just one item from there menu. read more

Ive been here a couple of times but never posted a review. The last time i visited was with a couple of friends from work and we met there about 5pm on a Wednesday evening. What i love about Cherry Reds is how when you step inside you feel relaxed - i also like the different seating areas they have. We grabbed a table upstairs overlooking John Bright St so we could people watch whilst chattering away. Initially we were caught up in conversation so didnt order for a while - there were no evil looks from staff for blocking a table at dinnertime (always a bonus!). When we went downstairs to order the staff were really lovely and happy to chat - like i said, its a welcoming place. I had a fish finger and tartare sauce sandwich which was delicious. Id recommend this place (and have on many, many occasions!) as a nice place to hang out after work or during the day. Ive only knocked a star off as i do think some of the prices are a little expensive but appreciate that its city centre prices. If i could i would have only knocked half a star off!! read more

This bar has an intimate setting so would be perfect for a first date! I'm looking forward to visiting Cherry Reds again as the service is always good and the atmosphere is relaxed. Popped in on a Sunday afternoon with the kids - very friendly and comfortable. Good prices, good selection of food and drinks too. It's a lot lighter in the daytime than the one in King's Heath which was nice, and with much more space. We'll definitely be going back! read more

A great place for an evening hire. We hired out the room upstairs for a game show birthday party. Cherry Reds did the catering, and did a good job making arrangements to cover all kinds of dietary requirements from gluten free, vegans, vegetarians, and dairy free. The private hire of the room was easy to arrange, and not too pricey. The staff did a good job of keeping up with us on the night of the hire. They stocked and staffed the upstairs bar next to the room we had hired. This saved us having to walk up/down stairs all night with drinks, and probably facilitated us in buying more drinks than otherwise. The food here is pretty limited but to a decent standard. I am disappointed that they changed the menu recently and removed my favourite salad dressing. Though when I ask for it, they do still make it for me! So excellent customer service from the team here. Brunch is good here. I would say worth a visit for that. Especially as they can cover different dietary requirements, and varying appetites easily. Great for a group visit for that reason. There is a good selection of ales, beers, and the like behind the bar. A range in bottles, and draft too. Worth noting that they have free wifi here. So it's a good little day time stop if you fancy somewhere to do some work. read more

Cherry Reds (or Cherry Ted's as it has affectionately been nicknamed amongst some friends) has to be one of my favourite bars in the city centre. It's a great place to meet for an evening but also tends to be one of our favoured places to end the night. I love the friendly relaxed atmosphere and the ecclectic seating. It feels more like a front room than a city centre bar. The music is pitched right as to be in the background so you can actually chat to friends without shouting and the sofas upstairs are a lovely place to chill at the end of an evening. They have a good selection of beers and, for those with a sweet tooth, fantastic cake! I've not eaten here apart from the cake but from reading other reviews I will need to rectify that soon. read more

Had never been here before today but really relaxed atmosphere, much easier to find a table than at brewdog opposite!! Also serve coffee etc as well as alcoholic drinks which was good for me when driving. Quite trendy bar, but really casual which is nice. Downstairs is fairly tight but outside seating and plenty of upstairs space means its a winner. read more

Love the quirky place and vintage feel of the place. Upstairs area has a great spot and comfy corner sofa. Quite like having a drink up there and watch the hustle and bustle of John bright street as night is getting started the ballet of cabs and stillettos . Staff is always very friendly and always accommodating - eg for my beer with strawberry syrup. If you don't know what you want they can help and make suggestions. Food is good, simple, tasty and reasonably priced . I love their grilled halloumi and chips :) Quirkiness of place is also a delight for the eyes. If your ever trying to decide where you want to eat in Birmingham and don't quite know what you fancy to eat Cherry Reds is the perfect place to go. With an extremely broad variety of food on offer, it would be difficult to not find something to please your appetite. The all day breakfasts are a massive plus, in case you ever feel like a full English breakfast for dinner, or the equally delicious vegetarian/vegan alternatives. Smaller lunch time options such as wraps and jacket potatoes are also served all day and their classic mains are exceptionally well priced. If you have the Independent Birmingham Card, you can get a free soft drink or beer with the mains, adding to the great value. Particular praise goes to their vegetarian alternative to fish and chips, with battered halloumi with chips. The staff are friendly and approachable and if you go in there regular you build up great rapport with them adding to the dining experience. Their service is great and again can be very unique to the customer, which you do not find in any of the chains located next to Cherry Reds in Grand Central. The overall look and vibe, along with the music played are all very individual and relaxed, even when the place gets crowded with huge groups of people coming in at the evening. Take away options on the food, especially with the jacket potato can come in handy if you're on a lunch break or passing through Birmingham and the location is close to other great places such as Brewdog and the Electric Cinema. It's a great place if you want to just grab a quick bite to eat or if you want to lurk with a group of friends for a few hours eating nachos and drinking beer. Dream. read more

I can't say it for everything, but breakfast was really shitty. Cat sausage, canned beans and old hard tasteless mushrooms. That was the Big Red $ 9 breakfast. Everything else is just a derivation of the same. Not sure how this place got all these review, but clearly it wasn't right. There are other good cafes around. Came out for a laid back bite to eat on date night and wasn't disappointed. Good menu if you're looking for something a little different. My date opted for a delicious looking burger and I opted for one of the veggie specials of the day (no mean feat to tempt this carnivore with a vegetarian meal, was full of flavour). Both meals were delicious. The beer choice is strong too, and were able to top the meal off with some of their delicious homemade cake and coffee. The atmosphere is buzzy but not noisy or obtrusive and the decor is interesting with a bit of a retro vibe. Great for a coffee and catch up or for a nice meal. read more

I'm giving a big thumbs up to Cherry Reds. A cosy, relaxed atmosphere with friendly staff with a selection of ales that I've never heard of (I look forward to trying them all out). It was quite busy at 6:30 with the after work crowd but I managed to find a couple of stools and moved to the comfy seats as it quietened down. There seemed to be something happening in the upstairs room so there were people coming and going all night proving Cherry Reds to be a popular and busy place to enjoy a drink. read more

Relaxed cosmopolitan feel.. Good honest food. Only visited once so far, had chicken "burger " with brie and chutney., the chicken was not a reconstituted thing but a slab of chicken breast grilled with a lovely hunk of brie melted on the top with soft baguette top and bottom. Chips on side deep dark colour like my grandmas used to make top marks for that and a salad garnish that was neither tiny nor huge ( which was crisp and dressed nicely) The GF had a nice looking baked spud.. Food was neither quick or slow to arrive just as long as it took to fresh cook the chicken. it was Saturday afternoon and looked lucky to get a table, Want to back on evening and try the beer. Headed here first thing in the morning on my birthday, for a fry up and a chocolate milkshake (don't judge). Was really impressed by the breakfast, really nice ingredients were used including the best hash brown I've ever had. I've visited Cherry's a few times now, both in the day and at night. The decor is fantastic - part Nan's living room, part charity shop, part quirky cool. For daytime, you can bag yourself a cosy table or comfy sofa and happily while away an afternoon. The menu is varied, with great breakfast options, light bites, lunches and main meals. Everything is pretty reasonably priced, and has a 'home cooked' feel. I've never had to wait long for my food to arrive, and everything is always tasty! It's also nice to see a good range of vegetarian options. The cake cabinet always tempts me, piled high with delicious looking treats. The soft drink range is good. I love the hot chocolates in particular. The only let-down for me is the coffee. It always seems to be luke-warm and just not that tasty. There's plenty of other options to keep you happy though, and it might just be an issue of personal taste for me. For the evening, don't expect to get a seat. Cherry's is usually busy, but the atmosphere is great. If you can find yourself a corner to perch in, the drinks are well-priced, and they have a huge range of beers. Really enjoyed the spacious, well decorated layout to the new Cherry Reds and all the staff we're very friendly and welcoming. We only experienced a couple of teething issues, mostly due to it having opened less than a week ago. When the food came, it had gone rather cold but the ingredients were very tasty and it all tasted home made just a shame it had been left to sit a while. Also I think the portions were almost over generous (for someone with a big appetite) which made them tricky to eat. I felt they could of got away with making it a little smaller and would probably result in a bit more profit for the buisness overall. Postives were- really nice, cosy decor. Great selection of beverages alcoholic and non alcholic. Lovely staff and awesome music. We will definitely be back as were big fans of both Cherry Reds. If you have any interest in joining a golf club, Kings Norton has a fantastic course comprising of 3 loops of 9 = 27 holes. The big benefit is that there are therefore three starting points. Most courses are 18 holes with one starting point so in simple terms more people can be playing at any one time than on a typical course. Compared to a nine hole course which you play twice to get to 18 this is a huge increase in capacity. Having played with members of the committee any preconceptions you might have of golf clubs being "stuck-up" could not be further from the truth in my experience. A delight addition to John Bright St which may otherwise go unnoticed. Situated just over from the likes of Turtle Bay and BrewDog, it's somewhere I have walked past many a time yet never thought to check out. My first time here was on an evening to catch up with some old friends. I was amazed by the selection of fruit beers and ciders which were well recommended by the bar staff and was impressed with everyone I had tried. The nibbles weren't so bad either. What really sold this place to me though was on my second visit the other day. Searching for a place in the city centre for breakfast passed 12pm has always been a struggle of mine and so I was delighted to come and check this place out last Sunday afternoon. We had opted for a regular sized (hearty) breakfast which was still a good portion (Normally I would opt to go grande but was unsure on this one). The food was very well cooked and filled the hole without the guilt of a greasy spoon sinking in directly after. Overall I would recommend you check out this hidden gem be it daytime or night. read more

Excellent choice of food and drinks whatever time of day you are there. The staff are excellent and are relaxed, friendly and helpful, especially when you are pondering over all the lovely beers! It can get very busy in there, but there is extra space upstairs and outside if it seems too packed for you. Only had 1 bad experience in there when a very drunken post-work crowd were too rowdy and overwhelmed the place. read more
