Was excited to see seeded watermelons and seeded grapes! We also grabbed some jelly's and apple butter. The Apple Butter took me back to Sunday mornings breakfast at Grandmas. The bakery side had a variety of yummy treats from doughnuts, pies, cookies and cakes. Definitely grabbed a few for later. The Apple Pie ice cream my hunnie ordered was delicious. Tasted just like Apple Pie. Looking forward to our next adventure here already.

The woman who checked us out was an absolute delight, warm, funny, and exactly what you hope for at a local farm stand. Unfortunately my experience in the herb section was the opposite. When I asked about strawberry plants and was told they didn't have any, I mentioned I was a first time gardener and asked if she could recommend something beginner friendly. Her response was essentially "just pick something, all you have to do is water them." When I explained again that I was new and looking for guidance, she told me she couldn't help me. As a first time gardener trying to learn, that kind of dismissiveness was discouraging. If it weren't for the lovely woman at checkout, I likely wouldn't return. I ended up going to Ed's Plant World in Brandywine where the staff were warm, welcoming, and genuinely helpful to a beginner. The difference was night and day. That said, I'm giving 4 stars because the place is really awesome in terms of selection and variety. The woman in the herb section may have just been having a bad day. It's absolutely worth checking out.

After several years of unsuccessfully trying to start my vegetable garden from seeds, I'm now a convert to Nalls' seedlings, and I especially love getting seedlings of lettuce and other greens here in the early spring. Last year I bought some watercress and mustard greens, which tickled my itch to try new-to-me traditional vegetables. If you're getting plants here, check out the Budding Gardeners Facebook group run by Nalls. You can get support and advice on your plants after you get them in the ground without going back to the store. I'll also add that every Nalls employee I've interacted with, including all the young seasonal employees, have been truly so nice. A+ hiring, right here. Nalls is also a great place to get some native plants, such as Virginia bluebells. However, they still stock some nasty invasives, such as vinca. I'm currently battling long-standing patches of vinca and English ivy in my yard and am surprised and sad that otherwise reliable nurseries still stock them. Get rid of those, and I'll happily give y'all 5 stars.

The kimchee is either cabbage and cucumber, and comes in small (a little bigger than a deck of cards $3) or large (the size of a day planner, approx 8.5"x5" $6) Plus, the couple who runs the place is so nice and helpful, and super quick! Sometimes the lady gives me a sample of freshly made kimchee if she's cooking in the back which is mmm :) And the bulgogi ($6/lb I believe) is amazing. Foolproof, and an easy way to pretend that you're an impressive cook. These guys are the first produce section inside when you're coming to Eastern Market from the metro. They always have beautiful displays of a good selection of fruits and veggies (prices are a little on the steeper side in general, but that's Eastern Market for you). I usually swing by here if I need a last minute lemon/garlic/parsnip/leek/etc after work, but I usually shy away from it on weekends when it's packed. Also, veggies/fruits in season are reasonably priced here and better quality than what you would find at Harris Teeter or Safeway. They also have a mini-grocery with staples and sauces. If you have no car and can't get out to H mart or Wegman's, this place has a good selection of Asian cooking sauces. Lentils were $3/bag here though, so I would stay away from other cheap staples unless absolutely necessary. Tip: Make sure to bring your reusable bag so they don't charge that new DC bag tax (they're strict at this place). Yes, you will get a banana and be expected to either hold it or bring your own bag. Location: the most Southern end of the South Hall. Also labeled as Paik's produce, and right next to Fine Sweet Shop.

We had spent 30 minutes wandering the market but quickly realized what a terrible idea that is on an empty stomach. After selecting a few stalks of their crisp, red rhubarb, while at the register we began eying the large, fresh-looking to-go containers of bibimbap, including a big scoop of white rice and a wide array of sauteed and fresh vegetables - one came with tofu (my selection) and the other option with beef (my husband's choice). Each lunch portion was $6.99. Both were delicious and refreshing. The accompanying chili paste had just the right amount of heat. We both finished our entire meals (and one fresh-squeeze raspberry lemonade from another vendor outside) sitting in the shade in the small square out back. Exactly what I was looking for for Saturday lunch.

Longview farm is not a CSA, you get to pick what items you want in your "basket". They grow delicious food slowly - heirloom tomatoes, lettuce greens, eggs fro hens on pasture, grass fed beef and heritage Berkshire pork. You can also visit the farm if you contact them! Check out where your meat is coming from, Portlandia style! They do not have a farm stand. Instead they deliver to customers in DC and locally. They use non GMO corn feed. They do not use pesticides nor herbicides, so it is all very labor intensive and grown very slowly. Penelope is the main person that answers email inquiries, she is warm, friendly and helpful! We just got our first delivery of leaf lard (I was super interested in this after reading about it - old timey pastry pork fat before Crisco became the norm), bacon, tomatoes, basil, shallots, and eggs. Everything looks like it came out of a Edible Magazine catalog showcasing farm gourmet! They deliver to Capitol Hill, Palisades, Cleveland Park, downtown DC, Smithsonian, and locally near the farm. They were recognized by Slow Food DC and Southern Maryland Meats. ---Information from a farm directory--- At Longview Farm, 20 miles south of the US capitol, we raise grass finished beef, pastured hens for eggs, Berkshire heritage pork, heirloom tomatoes, and salad greens. All our animals are raised without antibiotics, hormones, animal by products or growth supplements. We practice natural, sustainable and humane farming but are not certified organic. Our Angus cows are drug-free, grass fed/finished, born and bred on the farm. Rotationally grazed, the herd moves to fresh grass twice a day during the growing season. Our heritage Berkshire pigs are rotated through oak, hickory and poplar woods to forage and root for grubs, acorns, etc. Our meat is USDA processed. Our hens move each day to fresh pasture. Feeds for our pigs and chickens are freshly ground at an Amish feed mill with non GMO corn. Our vegetables are grown naturally without chemicals. Heirloom tomatoes are fragile, but incomparably delicious with evocative names - Heart of Compassion, Marianne, Cherokee Purple... In addition to growing delicious food, Longview Farm is committed to protecting open space and natural habitat in suburbanizing Prince Georges County. The woods and pastures sequester carbon, and the farming practices replenish the soil.
