This building just to the east of downtown is the new courthouse and it was built here in 1972. It is a "modern" design with buff-colored brick and concrete. The one-story structure has a recessed glass entrance, peaked rooflines of red tile and a flat copper dome. This courthouse marks a transition from ornate classical design to functional modernism. And I get it, it's just rather unremarkable. It reflects the county's practical priorities and while it's dignified, it is far from ornate. The city was known only as the "court-house village" until it was incorporated in 1831 and Spartanburg was created. It is in the geographic center of the county. The current structure replaces the fourth courthouse which had been built in 1891. The first three were in Morgan Square. There is a huge parking lot though many of the best spaces seem to be reserved for court employees and police. Once you do find parking, expect the usual security to enter the building. It is fairly new (maybe 10 years old?), but was designed to look rustic (almost like something you would find in the mountains.) A wall of windows overlook the woods and the grassy softball field.
