The Old Cleveland County Courthouse still stands at the center of Shelby and is now the Earl Scruggs Center. This building just to the east of downtown is the new courthouse and it was built here in 1972. It is a "modern" design with buff-colored brick and concrete. The one-story structure has a recessed glass entrance, peaked rooflines of red tile and a flat copper dome.
This courthouse marks a transition from ornate classical design to functional modernism. And I get it, it's just rather unremarkable. It reflects the county's practical priorities and while it's dignified, it is far from ornate.
