Buncombe County Court House - Buncombe County Courthouse, Asheville

Buncombe County Court House

Buncombe County was formed in 1791 and named for Edward Buncombe, a Revolutionary War officer…read more Nestled in the mountains of western North Carolina, the county quickly became a cultural and political center, with Asheville as its seat and growing rapidly in the 1800s thanks to railroads, tourism, and the region's reputation for restorative mountain air. The Buncombe County Courthouse, completed in 1928, stands as a towering example of Beaux-Arts architecture with subtle Art Deco touches. Designed by Douglas Ellington (who is also responsible for the neighboring Asheville City Hall), the courthouse rises seventeen stories, making it the tallest county courthouse in North Carolina. Its limestone façade, classical ornamentation, and richly appointed interior ‐ with marble floors, coffered ceilings, and bronze fixtures ‐ reflect the civic optimism of Asheville's boom years, just before the Great Depression slowed further development. Beside the courthouse stands a three-tiered empty plinth. From 1905 until its removal in 2021, it held a monument to Confederate soldiers, taken down following a vote by county commissioners. The vacant pedestal now serves as a quiet marker of the region's evolving public memory. Asheville is a city of smart parking meters and parking decks. You won't find free parking here. Was there for jury duty for a 1st degree murder case. Never have I ever seen anything more idiotic then this place. The worst judges! Judge Thornburg a real piece of work. The stupidest prosecutors. I felt sorry for the defendant actually. I was called onto the jury but excused after answering questions truthfully. So many of us were excused. They kept the most uneducated and ignorant people who they believed would convict in a heartbeat. If choosing the jury is like a circus then what must the TRIAL be like. The defendants atty hardly had a chance to ask any questions. The prosecutor was on stage and what a performance it was. It's a sad commentary! Thank God I'll never have to serve again. They tell you "it's the most important thing you can do" LOL! It's the least important thing you can do here in Asheville. I'm from Brooklyn NY and no one here would survive up North. Nothing but redneck hillbillies and that's the truth. By the way the prosecutor had a "NAPOLEON COMPLEX". Very short with red hair. A real jerk. Nothing he said made one bit of sense yet he mumbled on and on about COMMON SENSE which he had none. What a joke! Now I can go back to doing really important things like saving animals and this pitiful world we now live in. Little does this so called court realize that there is a higher court judging them. "THE UNIVERSAL COURT" Amen

This is clearly not the original courthouse for Gaston County. This one was built in the 1990s and…read moreis a modern concrete and glass structure on landscaped grounds not far from downtown Gastonia. The building houses the County Superior Court and County District Court of the 27th Judicial District. There is a massive parking lot with the nearest parking reserved for various county officials and law enforcement. I was able to find a spot not too far away considering the building was secured for the day. Easy to walk the grounds and see the power of this massive structure. When Gaston County was formed, the county seat was in Dallas and the first courthouse was built there in 1848. It burned in 1874 and was replaced with the second courthouse in 1876, which is still standing and today functions as the Dallas City Hall. The county seat was moved to Gastonia in 1911 and a third county courthouse was built. It's still standing at the corner of North Gaston and West Trade. There are few ethical judges and lawyers in here. My ex Robert Vaughan jr can do perjury and…read morenothing happens. He is above the law. My experience is that the judges allowed perjury, fabrication, and forgery. There is no justice and only few are good and do their job like they should. They are so shady now they won't allow phones or laptops in and this happened during my case because they know they are doing unethical and doing injustice. They are oppressing innocent people and children. They don't want any of this leaking out. My ex was doing child endangerment and still did nothing. They allowed kidnapping and rape also. There is no justice. It is very sad how it's not about evidence anymore it's about bias judges. Not all are biased I can't say it for all but, the ones I dealt with were. They called me out saying cop is offensive and anytime they try to make a comedy out of me when you think judges will be civil and mature not in my case. Wade Carpenter a lawyer is unethical he harassed me and my children and interrogated us and he won't follow a court order either. I suggest leaving this state and getting far away or find a national lawyer because you won't get a fair trial. 20% chance you might get a neutral judge who actually isn't biased and not a sellout.

As county courthouses go, this one gets a couple stars for a simple layout, but it pretty much has…read moreto stop there. This is an older courthouse that is getting fairly outdated and crowded for the usual docket lineup on any given day of the week. As is usual now, the front door greets you with an immediate metal detector set up combined with an conveyor belt for scanning pocketbooks and other bags. A deputy will pat you down in the event you set alarms off. After that, it's pretty simple. To your right are the various clerk's offices separated by division: criminal, civil, and special proceedings. To your left is a single long hallway that takes you to the various courtrooms. Signage is deplorable, and you'd be wise to check the printed paper dockets outside each courtroom to make sure you are in the right place. Courtroom assignments can change, so don't ever assume you know where you'll be. If in doubt, it's always wise to go check back at the clerk's office. Being a smaller county, these staff here can usually take the time to look up your case and tell you where you need to be and when you need to be there. The courtrooms themselves are pretty small and cramped here, so expect to be shoulder to shoulder with your fellow citizens, joining for a day of justice in action. The good news is that being so small, it's pretty easy to hear what's happening up at the bench with the judge and clerks. Parking is always an interesting endeavor here. There is a small lot to the right of the courthouse and on just across the street that provides ample free parking. These small lots tend to fill up fast, and then you're left with street options and various amount of time you can stay parked for free. Don't park in the businesses just across the street, though, as they are well known for towing non-customers.
