Perhaps humanizing a little bit more this wonderful park. The marker has text on both sides. The front, "Col. Frederick Hambright (1727-1817), a prominent militia officer of the American Revolution, lived his last 25 years in a house which stood 200 yards northeast. Hambright, born in Germany, emigrated to America as a boy, and settled in North Carolina by 1750. He held several Tryon County offices from 1774 to 1776, most notably a brief term as a member of the North Carolina Provincial Congress in 1775." And the reverse, "Hambright, after several campaigns, was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel by 1779. He commanded the Lincoln County (North Carolina) troops at Kings Mountain Oct. 7, 1780, and was severely wounded. After recuperating at a log cabin near the battlefield he returned to North Carolina but soon moved to South Carolina and built a two-story house near the cabin; it burned in 1927. He is buried 1 mile east of Grover, North Carolina at Shiloh Cemetery." This is marker number 11-5 and it was erected in 1999 by the Cherokee County Historical and Preservation Society. Guided the ill-fated Fremont expedition of 1848. Was born near here in 1787." Online, there is more information. "William Sherley Williams (1787-1849), known as "Old Bill," was a fur trapper and, along with "Kit" Carson and James Bridger, was among the best known of the Old West explorers often referred to as the "Mountain Men." Williams served as an official interpreter during the War of 1812. His familiarity with the Osage Indian customs and the Osage region made him a highly regarded guide for the United States government. His scouting ability afforded Williams the opportunity to take part in numerous expeditions. Known for his rowdiness and drinking, "Old Bill" Williams traversed the Santa Fe Trail and took part in expeditions which explored California, New Mexico, and the Northwest. In 1848 Williams joined an ill-fated expedition led by Charles Fremont, during the course of which 11 men died during a mountain snowstorm, causing the party to turn back. Williams and another survivor were attacked and killed by Ute Indians when they attempted to retrace the trail. The town of Williams and Bill Williams Mountain in Arizona are named for "Old Bill."" There is plenty of parking here. [Review 678 of 2025 - 4158 in North Carolina - 24239 overall]

Located in downtown Spartanburg, the Daniel Morgan Monument was erected in 1881 and commemorates the centennial of the victory at the Revolutionary War Battle of Cowpens South Carolina and its hero, General Daniel Morgan. Morgan (1736-1802) was one of the most respected battlefield tacticians of the American Revolutionary War. The Battle of Cowpens took place on January 17, 1781 where some 2000 Colonial militia and regulars faced 1000 British troops under Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton. The American victory was the worst loss suffered by British units since General John Burgoyne surrendered to General Horatio Gates at the Saratoga in 1777 and helped raise the spirits of the Colonials that the British could be defeated. Atop a 21 foot tall octagonal Doric column made from granite, it stands 30 feet tall and was modeled by John Quinch Adams Ward who said at the time, "I represented him with a drawn sword, advancing with his troops, his attention for a moment attracted by some movement of the enemy on the left." Morgan does not face in any direction that makes sense until it's pointed out that he's facing exactly towards the battlefield at Cowpens. The first plaque reads, "To the American Soldiers who on the field of Cowpens, January 17th, 1781, fought victoriously for The Right of Self Government and Civil Liberty. We enjoy the Result of their toil and sacrifice, let us emulate their fortitude and virtue. This Column is erected by the States of New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, and South Carolina. The Old Thirteen States, and The State of Tennessee 1881." There are others. Check out https://evendo.com/locations/south-carolina/spartanburg/landmark/daniel-morgan-monument for more information.
