Fortune Well is a new Sichuan restaurant by the Red chilli Group which already owns six other…read moreSichuan restaurants in Sydney and Melbourne. For those uninitiated in Sichuan cuisine, there's only one thing you should know. It's SPICY! Personally I can't tolerate a lot of heat but I find that I can usually bear the mild dishes which are not brimming with Sichuan peppercorns or chillies. Interestingly, Szechuan chilli tastes different than hot Indian curries or spicy Thai soups. Their peppercorns particularly impart a distinct smoky heat which I love. As Sichuan restaurants are few and far between in Brisbane, we really wanted Fortune Well to be successful. We ordered the Ma Po Dau Fu, Fried Rice, Kung Po Chicken, spicy noodles and steamed rice. The service was terrible. I appreciate that in the Sunnybank area, it's good if your wait staff can speak Mandarin or Cantonese but this should never be at the expense of speaking English. The waitress either forgot that we had asked for a drinks menu or she didn't understand the request in the first place. The steamed rice took ages to come out which is a bit silly seeing you just scoop it from a rice cooker. If you're a big fan of normal or vegetarian rice, be warned. Here their fried rice is done with eel or seafood -which wasn't bad but just unexpected. Finally, don't expect to pay 'Sunnybank' prices at this place. It's expensive. Our meal came to $64 for steamed rice, two mains and a small entree. Ouch. This is probably one to go to if you love your Szechuan chillies but I'll probably give it a miss from now on.

The chicken dishes were perfect; soft meat and great flavour. Same for the fish dish, which I think may have been cod. I found that in terms of heat, it wasn't too bad. The only dish that didn't blow me away was the lamb, it wasn't bad but it didn't compare to the chicken dishes. Sadly, this restaurant is let down by its awful service. I'm usually very lenient with wait staff as I know it's not easy working in the service industry, but the restaurant almost feels inaccessible to anyone that isn't Chinese. It is VERY difficult to communicate with the wait staff in English; the staff are often rude (I asked one of the waitresses which dish she had brought us, to which she looked at me and said "I don't know!" and walked off, luckily a couple dining next to us told us what it was) and they are also often unorganised (the last thing on our table is often the rice, and by the time it gets to us, the rest of our food has gone cold). I keep saying I won't come back because I get fed up with the service, but the food is damn good so I'm at a loss. Great restaurant if you're Chinese or if you're patient. Otherwise I might give this one a miss.

Repeat visits have confirmed my initial impression of Su Life: the people make good food, but they…read morearen't actually that good at running a restaurant. They've opened late on me once, and another time they asked me to sit outside so they could leave and lock the door (I hope they picked up my plate later), even though it really wasn't that bad of a time (before 2:00). They are not big on staying open outside a very narrow range of hours. They also charge extra for rice, and managed to sell me a dish without reminding me of that only to have me rustle up change to pay for some rice once my dinner arrived without it. Their beaten up tables and tiny space offer little in the way of ambiance. But if you want a good fried tofu dish, you won't be disappointed. All the things I've ordered have been tasty, notably a sizzling tofu in black pepper sauce that did indeed sizzle nicely. They have plenty of other dishes that I would want to try, and no one's more of a sucker for all-vegetarian Asian restaurants than I am. Luckily for them, I sometimes have business in the area, so I probably will continue to eat here on occasion. That being said, I don't see how I can rate them any better than this, even though I do enjoy the food, as their prices are not low, and they have not got much else going for them.

Call it what you may, it has always been the deal breaker with my love for meat. Should I ever decide that it was time for me to go vegetarian, it would be because of tofu. I was raised on soy products being from Malaysian heritage... so it should really come as no surprise that everything from soft tofu cooked broth to your agedashi fried tofu to you hot pot tofu to you egg tofu, are all things that I have had many a love affair with. Sometimes at the same time (tsk tsk). So when I met Su Life, an instant bond took affect. There is nothing better than tofu than tofu imitating meat. How good is it to order some barbeque chinese pork (char siu) and have it come out, looking so delicious with its red tingy edges marinaded to perfection. How yummy it tastes when you have the first bite. How delightful when you know it's vegetarian tofu imitating pork so well you can hardly tell the truth. Su Life was that for me, they do the non-meats so well sometimes the texture is astounding...especially the fish. Looks just like it. Could have fooled me, and the idiot meat eater sitting on the next table thinking he was actually eating meat. Surprise! What a surprise Su Life was Yelpers. It may not be much to look at, but boy can it provide meat with a good run for its money.
