This was our second stop on an Asian food crawl. It's a nice warm space with lots of wood. They have a open patio in the back if you want to sit outside. The menu is 80% dumplings of one sort or another, a few skewers and maybe three or four entrées. We were very impressed with the quality and flavor of the wontons in chili oil. They were combination of pork and shrimp, and the chili oil was just the perfect amount of heat - it did not overpower the dumplings at all. We also ordered crispy pork eggrolls, and they were so hot that we had to wait more than five minutes to eat them. When we went to check out, the proprietor of the place came up to the register to take the payment and her hands were full of flour and dough. Truly, they make everything in house and it shows. The pricing is a little high compared to other dumpling places however the quality merits it. Wish we could've ordered more there. It was so tasty! read more

In a street of hot dogs, pizza and bar-life, Fat Dumpling is a decent option for dumplings and Chinese cuisine. We dined here on a Thursday evening in a group of six. Like, Karen S, I admired the space and how they've designed it. The menu features fairly standard and western-ised Chinese dumpling dishes. Between us we managed to sample quite a bit of the menu from the chinese broccoli salad, shallot pancake, cumin lamb skewers to the salt & pepper squid, prawn and garlic chives dumplings, and the pork xiao long bao. All dishes were brought to the table incredibly quickly. So quickly in fact that we were unable to fit most of the plates on our small table with the rate they were being delivered. I'm no expert, but I feel this is a service process that could be fixed with a little more consideration given to the timing of plates. There were a few other hiccups, including a hair found in a few of our dishes, but still, Fat Dumpling is a place with promise. It is offering something affordable and different in the area and overall our meal was ample and none of us went hungry. I'm hoping it was all down to a bad day and future visits will be a little less chaotic. Pro Tip: Order the broccoli salad and the pork xiao long bao. Having read quite a few Foodie blogger pieces on Fat Dumpling, I couldn't resist popping in today as I walked past. Firstly I love what they have done to the space. The exposed and renovated brick wall is divine. Adds heaps of character to the long narrow space. I was there early, first customer of the day I think? So service was attentive and friendly. I choose the pork belly braised in sweet soy from the main dishes. And of course some steamed dumplings - prawn, pork and chives. The food didn't take long and I got the pork belly first. The sticky sweet soy sauce was delish. However, I was a bit disappointed that the pork belly wasn't more tender. In fact it was quite chewy. Now I am not sure if this is the traditional way? But as pork belly is hot hot hot on so many menus these days, I was expecting melt in your mouth, tenderness. Don't get me wrong, it was yummy....just took a bit more work to digest. The dumplings (6) came out next in the bamboo steamer. Yum they looked full, fat and juicy! woo hoo. The flavour was fresh and light. There is not a lot of other flavour, spice or seasoning in there. So you do need to dip in to sauce. They were tender and delicate. I think I would have enjoyed a more punchy dipping sauce than the soy sauce and vinegar on the table. This is a place and people you want to love. You want it to be a spot you walk to Sunday night and fill up (get fat) on fat dumplings. Fat Dumpling unfortunately doesn't have a whole lot of space, so if you're planning to hit them up as a large group, it is imperative to make a booking, so they can make table arrangements. Otherwise, it is wisest to visit them as a pair. But if you manage to secure a table, you're in for a treat. The menu offers a selection on small non-dumpling related small bits (salt and pepper squid is delish), and in the dumpling section, they've got everything covered: chicken, pork, prawn, fish or vegetable dumplings cooked any of the three ways: steamed, poached or pan fried (gyoza style!). Where they fail miserably is in dessert. There's only one option, but hey! It's the Valley. There's bound to be something else on offer that'll tickle your fancy. read more

Tried two different kinds of dumplings, decided on the prawn and garlic chives as well as the chicken and asparagus - both steamed. They were alright but nothing to write home about. This place is awesome. I messed up - I ordered take away from the Brunswick St place, thinking it was the King St Place. So they could have just been furious at me! But instead, they offered to drive my dinner over. AMAZING CUSTOMER SERVICE. And AMAZING FOOD! Cumin lamb was fire-y and delicious. Pork and cabbage dumpling were crispy on the bottom and juicy inside. Stif Fried beans were the best I've had. Cucumber salad was a perfect fresh accompaniment to the rest of the meal. The owners were really lovely. And the jasmine tea is so fragrant. From the entrees we ordered the crystal cucumber salad which I highly recommend. The crunchy pieces of cucumber mixed with a lovely dressing were a great start to our meal as we waited for our dumplings. The highlights for me were the pork and asparagus pan fried dumplings and the steamed fish dumplings. We could see they were freshly making the dumplings in the kitchen and the quality and flavour of the food was great. Disappointing. Extremely. The highlight of the meal was the Chinese broccoli salad, came out within 3 mins of ordering and gave us a great deal of hope and expectation. That hope and expectation was destroyed beyond crippling belief a few mere minutes later. The pork belly was drowned in sauce and was so unrecognisable, a CSI team and top notch forensic pathologist would have struggled to confirm its identity, instead of succulent and delicious it was soggy and over powering. $8.80 for 6 mediocre chicken and asparagus dumplings that were so bland it was a disgrace to the heritage of the Three Kingdoms of 225AD. So bad in fact that Zhuge Liang would rise from his 2,000 year old grave to bitch slap the chefs. Lamb skewers, not sure what they were doing on the menu of a dumpling restaurant, we stupidly anticipated a fusion of Greek and Chinese (could be a market in that) but were disappointed in receiving dry and over cooked meat that Sam Kekovich would have sent back to the kitchen in utter disgrace with some choice words that aren't appropriate in this sort of forum. The Xiao long bao was filled with a decent soup however the filling was of similar substance of the above mentioned dumplings. Uninspiring. Would love to have given a report on the pork and Chinese cabbage dumplings but they forgot to give them to us and we were so disheartened by this point we cancelled the order. BYO at $5 a head is average but no ice buckets for white wine and an offer to put it in their fridge saw it placed on the bench near the kitchen and almost mulled upon its return. We had to ask several times for plates and wine glasses, for a venue with 4 wait staff and a capacity of 40 guests, shouldn't have been that difficult. Put in this way, there is a LONG way to go for Brisbane to catch up with the rest of Australia is this place has been acknowledged as having the best dumplings. There are so many dumpling places in Brisbane and unfortunately this one is NOT one I would recommend. The food was very westernized which was odd considering that the owners are from China. We ordered chicken skewers, xiao long bao, and pork dumplings. The chicken skewers came out RAW!!! I was totally grossed out by this and when I told the waiter (who I think was also one of the owners), he didn't say anything or apologize... it was weird. The other two dishes were sub-par and not very tasty. Overall the food wasn't good and the service was poor. read more

In comparison to Harajuku Gyoza just a little further up the street, this place is a big flop. The ordering system is weird and last night they had about 4 cooks but only 1 server, who seems to not only be inexperienced but also do not speak English. She constantly handed dishes over people's head, nearly knocking over me several times. The food was alright, tasty even, but the service really ruined everything for us. They took over one hour to serve our food (poached pork prawn & chives, fried chicken & asparagus, pork belly) - it came out at the same time as people who arrived about 45 minutes after us. They mixed up drink orders and constantly gave us fresh plates, but refused to give us fresh chop sticks. Don't come here when you're extremely hungry - you will be disappointed. read more
