My partner was given an injectable medication by Tuan which within 3 days resulted in acute pancreatitis. Of course we didn't know what it was, but Tuan was out of the office and whoever talked to us was familiar with the symptoms but did not identify it specifically as pancreatitis or give any recommendations about what to do! For the record it's extremely important not to have ANY alcohol and to fast as long as possible, then have only bone broth, among other things. This is unprofessional and unacceptable. At a minimum has caused my partner a week of misery. Take care with each and every doctor, no matter their reputation. Always ask what the worst possible side effects are, what the symptoms are, what they mean, and what to do about them. Read the inserts on your medications before taking them. If you have diabetes, get a referral to a Certified Diabetes Educator, they're much more knowledgeable about the disease and its nuances. read more

I've been Dr. Tuan's patient since 2015. I was dealing with Amenorrhea (caused by anorexia) for two years when my GP referred me to doctor Tuan. I had seen many doctors, from OBs to endocrinologist at that point but none could help me resolve the issue other than offering birth control/hormones which I wasn't willing to take long term. My appointment wit Dr. Tuan was late February and I had my periods back in April! He sent me to do two MRIs, a blood test, then changed the dosage of my levothyroxine and my body came back to a healthy state after 3 months. I've been Dr. Tuan's patient since and he guided me through a pregnancy also, keeping my thyroid hormones balanced which is very important during pregnancy. I can't say enough good things about him and highly recommend him. He is patient, friendly and very knowledgable. I do not know how good is Dr. Tuan but his receptionist is rude and arrogant. She basically keeping patients away from the doctor. When I called today she listened all the symptoms as she's a doctor and then said that I need to bring a referral. Why? They do not accept my insurance so I am going without an insurance, I am willing to pay out of my pocket for a second opinion and I am great with bringing all my medical records. Absolutely shameful. He diagnosed me with Hashimoto's Disease. Which is the only good thing or useful thing this man did. When I asked what's next as far as treatment he said, and I quote verbatim: "live well and be calm, we'll test again in 6 months" That was it! That's appalling. And dangerous. He left me in the lurch, with antibodies going crazy in my body. My journey has been a long one. I tried two different functional medicine doctors in SF and other than spending a lot of money, I got no where. So I began exhaustive research and you get to benefit from it. #1 GET OFF GLUTEN !!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOW (or taper, some people can have a nasty reaction, taper over the course of 2 weeks) Don't argue or pout, you must do this. #2 Get off grains and legumes. Get off sugar and fructose. Research the Ketogenic Diet. #3 You want to be tested a few times a year for TSH, TPO, T3 and T4. Free T3 and Free T4. Any doctor who thinks TSH is enough is wrong. If your doctor refuses to do ALL of the tests contact a local nutritionist named Cathy Cohn. She'll get you the correct paperwork for blood work. I use her for this purpose. She might suggest other types of blood work that many doctors poo-poo - the more you know, the better you'll be. #4 Show your labs to a compounding pharmacy who will create a formula just for you and who will adjust it every few months.. Your numbers can change and the medication should change too. I use Koshland Pharm here in SF and I swear by Peter Koshland. I get tested, I give him my numbers, then he works with my primary care MD to tweak my formula accordingly. #5 Read this book "Hashimoto's Root Cause" by Isabella Wentz. It will change your life. You'll learn so much about food, tests, supplements, and so forth. Because I've taken charge of this my TPO antibodies have continued to go down! February 2014 update: my TPO is now 9 yay!) I'm updating again in 10/2016 and my numbers are consistently below 15. Medication + going off gluten + a lot of blood work + major diet changes + the book I mentioned could really help you too. Every now and then I think of Tuan's words "live well and be calm" and I feel anything but calm! But his arrogance catapulted me into research and pleased that I was able to get answers. 2016 UPDATE: I have heard from at least 35 Yelpers asking if I have found a good endocrinologist. This is very depressing and says a lot about the state of health care. I never found one anywhere in the Bay Area that was good enough, so I'm on my own and I'm doing a great job as I know you can too. Stephanie, the medical assistant is so incredibly rude and difficult to deal with. She has now 3 separate times said she would call back and hasn't so I have been calling her to follow up on a prescription. She promised it would be taken care of by this afternoon and I just called to find out that it had not. We are now going on over a week without our medication. I do understand that some medications need pre-authorizations but just be aware that this office has no sense of urgency getting you the correct medications. She is the most rude person I have ever dealt with. We will be switching doctors because of her and I am guessing that you all will be too if you ever have to deal with her. I've always been happy with going to Dr Tuan - he's one of the 1st endos that didnt harrass me about my weight impacting my diabetes; one of the 1st drs to let me know that Asians had it harder, as we exhibit signs of type II at much lower body weights than other people (iow, its not 'cause I'm fat, I got it with a BMI of 22) Everytime I come in, even when things havent been going well, he's been fantastic about looking at the bright side, and working with me to get me back on track. read more

Dr Tuan is an amazing Doctor I started seeing him 15 years ago after my Primary couldn't stabilize my Glucose numbers. He had me do testing and really explained what I needed to do. I was obese and this was affecting my Glucose level. One visit I was talking to him about my weight and it was a real challenge to lose weight. I was currently on 2 Orals meds and 2 Insulin's. Dr Tuan spoke to me about losing weight and getting me in a program who does Bariatric surgery. After thinking about the weight loss I still didn't make changes. After about 3 years in limbo I finally got the courage to pursue the weight lost surgery. He referred me to Dr John Morton at Stanford Medical Center. So after I went to all the classes and seminars about the Bariatric weight loss and how to be successful. I had the surgery and when I left the hospital I was no longer on any Oral meds and Insulin. I also stopped taking my high blood pressure meds. This was 6 years ago and I lost a total weight of 200+ lbs. I have also been able to keep the weight off. Dr. Tuan is a great doctor. I came to him with an out-of-whack thyroid, and we tried several things before zapping it and putting me on synthetic hormones. He's always had time to listen to my particular problems and has always made helpful suggestions. I wish he was my main doctor--for my troubled thyroid years he was--but now that I'm all better, we've both moved on. When I first went to see him, he seemed so young that I was a tiny bit skeptical, but when I visited my dad in St. Luke's, there was my Dr. Tuan, visiting one of his patients. He deals with serious stuff, too. Like my dad, who was in the hospital for a bout with his diabetes. It's a nasty disease I'm likely to inherit. And, if I do end up with diabetes, I'm hopeful Dr. Tuan will have a space in his busy schedule for me, too. I can't say enough good things about Dr. Tuan. I've hesitated writing this review, since I'm pretty sure Dr. Tuan means well. He is a nice guy and all, and his receptionist is the saving grace to that office. I wouldn't say I would trust Dr. Tuan with my life. He's an okay doctor, but just okay. When I initially saw him with just the basic bloodwork to show from my regular doctor, he never ordered more in depth blood tests for me to understand more what is going on with my thyroid (really?!). I went to a Naturopath a little after, and she asked why these had not been ordered and immediately ordered them for me. Finally some information! After several visits and the in depth blood results from my naturopath, he couldn't tell me if I indeed have Hashimoto's Disease... "I don't know, I'm not sure yet" (I have since had this verified with Dr. Nathan Becker, that yes, absolutely I do, without a doubt). He's been gung-ho about removing half my thyroid due to a large nodule (I have since been told NEVER remove half when you have an auto-immune disease, since the anti-bodies will just destroy the other half).....C'mon buddy, I'm just trying to get some information and understand why my body is doing what it's doing! I wouldn't say he's terrible, but I have had some conflicting information from this doctor and I believe, I haven't received the best care possible and been shown the whole picture...trust him with my life, not hardly. read more

Nice guy for sure but doesn't seem to listen to the patient. He seems to make a decision based on what "usually" is the case for your gender and age group and based on palpating the issue you are having. (Like voicing his opinion that something he is palpating is benign because it feels that way). I have a thyroid nodule with various cysts and I have not even been given information about why this is happening or an option to have surgery. I had a biopsy done by Tuan and that was not sufficient because there weren't enough cells in the samples and now I have to have another one. (what?!) It takes 2 weeks or longer to even get an appt. for any sort of diagnostic procedures. I have also had severe lymphadenopathy, including as of late, a protruding clavicle from swelling, on the same side as the adenoma or nodule, and the doc doesn't think the two are related. Really?? He thought I had some local infection somewhere even though I've explained that the lymph nodes have been swollen since the nodule appeared and they are not going back to normal size. I've had no "local" infection, which would presumably be in the sinuses, ears or throat. He also did not seem to want to do additional testing for the lymphadenopathy, since he thought it was not related to the nodule. We'll see how the rest of my visits pan out, as I have to have more diagnostics done, but at this point I would recommend getting a second opinion and be prepared to make multiple visits to Tuan's office. read more

I had my first visit with Dr. Tuan on Friday, Nov. 1, 2019 after having Hashimoto's for five years and feeling ill after taking the medicine every morning. 1st, can I just say that I'd give Dr. Tuan 10 stars over these 5. I am a Type 1 Diabetic and Dr. Tuan is the 1st (out of about 10 , maybe a little more) endocrinologist I've ever had since being diagnosed 13 yrs ago who has truly cared and worked WITH me to gain control of my diabetes. Where other endos have failed over and over again, he has accomplished within 6 months of treating me. I have never been in such great control of my diabetes until now. I can't stress enough how important it is that he is working WITH me. Most endos just "blame" me for my situation and then just tell me the same things. But, Dr. Tuan truly listened to me and got to know and understand my lifestyle. Then, he figured out a routine with me that works with my crazy lifestyle. He has been on top of my trends with every visit and has been able to pin point my blood glucose reactions (where other endos could not do for some reason). The best thing about Dr. Tuan is that he doesn't tell me that I can't eat this or I can't eat that, etc. He emphasizes that balance & portions are key. This, helps tremendously because I never feel like I'm restricted. I feel more "normal" and I can eat what everyone else eats, thus having less tendencies to rebel. Plus, portioning really makes a difference in keeping my blood glucose in control and it keeps me at my desired weight from not over-eating. I actually look forward to my visits with Dr. Tuan now because I get excited to share my progress with him. I know I will be totally bummed if I ever have to switch endos again (hopefully, that won't happen). Also, Cathy, his receptionist, and the other assistants there are so friendly and always "on top of things", as another reviewer commented. They treat me like family every time I call or come to the office. I had been diagnosed 6 years ago with Hypothyroidism, I tried going to other endocrinologists that did nothing said my results were fine and that maybe I should see a nutritionist. I knew something was wrong being tired all the time and never even on strict diets I couldn't lose weight, Dr. Tuan is awesome he kept changing my doses to get it just right seems my tests were off my old Dr. was using outdated information. He actually made sure I feel good and my levels were good. Also great at giving other ideas or options to help me lose the weight I gained in the last few years. Dr. Tuan is nice, but he's never around, and he seems not to know anything when he is around. His receptionist is nice, but she doesn't know anything and makes it her job not to facilitate between the Dr. and the patient, but to keep the patients away from the doctor. When I call with questions, she always wants me to tell HER all my symptoms first, which I wouldn't want to do anyway, but especially don't want to do with her because she then simply turns me over to the doctor and I have to repeat it all anyway. Getting a referral from them is like pulling teeth. Not even that. When you pull teeth, eventually you'll get a tooth. I think they do referrals directly from the phone book, because when you finally DO get a referral from them, it's inevitably the worst doctor in the city. I don't have any confidence in Dr. Tuan and can't even really say whether or not I received good care because it's so difficult to receive care at all from him. read more

Dr. Tuan is a great doctor for a number of reasons. First, he thoroughly explained my condition, how it affects my body and treatment options. I felt that he gave me the attention and time that I needed as most docs want you in and out. He also took time to see if I had any questions for him and seems very pleasant and nice. I have worked in the medical field for 14 years and customer service is a extremely important. I was very disappointed in Dr. Tuan office. My advice to patients and too future patients always pay your copay with check or credit card never in CASH. I left a message for the billing manager to call me and I never received a call back. When I asked to speak about the balance, the person I spoke to Cathy was very rude and yelled at me that I had only paid for partial payment. I remember the person who took my mom's copay was on the phone and writing my receipt, and scheduling an appoinment. Mistakes can happen when multitasking but Cathy wouldn't hear what I had to say. She than accused me of accusing her of stealing and kept raising her voice. When I realized that she wasn't even listening to what I had to say. I told her that I wil be writing a letter to Dr. Tuan, and I asked to speak to Dr. Tuan. Cathy yelled NO!! You already said you will write a letter. So I guess leaving a message for the doctor was out of the question. Unfortunately I had to rate Dr. Tuan one star due to his office staff. He is a very nice compassionate doctor but he should have a chat with his staff about customer service. I have a feeling the letter I write will never reach the doctor because Cathy emphasize she will be talking to the doctor herself. Apparenlty this happens alot in the office if one of the staff member pulled my mom aside and advised her to pay with a check or credit card and to get her cash back so she wouldn't have this problem again. Please think carefully before you see this doctor if you have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. This past Feb I was very sick with a TSH of 25. I was desperately seeking a bona fide endo who knew how to manage thyroid disease. I had been terribly mismanaged by 2 "esteemed" endos in SF. Iam an R.N. in SF and had been referred to Dr. Tuan by an M.D. who was a personal friend of his and who had worked with him. Dr. Tuan was described by his friend as knowledgeable and very compassionate. When I called Dr. Tuan's office , I spoke with the receptionist there and told her my situation and how I had been mismanaged by 2 other endos and was terrified I was synthroid intolerant and didn't know what to do and was there a way I could please speak with Dr. Truan. She told me she would take the message and relay it to Dr. Tuan. Well she called back and told me Dr. Tuan said he couldn't help me and that "I should find another endocrinologist" I hung up in tears . Through the knowledge of my children's pediatrician, I was referred to Dr. Nathan Becker in SF. He is one of the most prestigious endos in the country and in the world. Iam not kidding. Google him and you will be astonished. Within 10 minutes, he accurately diagnosed me and put me on the correct treatment. I am not synthroid intolerant,. I am on synthroid 137 mcg and a bit of cytomel. He is a miracle worker. He gave me my life back. Dr. Becker makes "doctors" like Dr. Tuan look ridiculous. Please take the time to see Dr. Becker.
