We love visiting distilleries and doing tastings when we travel. The Chemist website boasted about a wonderful tasting room. We arrived and they said it was closed but we could taste some at the bar. It was $9. The bartender poured the drinks and that was the end of the interaction. She did point to a window and say that's where they distill. There were only a few other people but she did not seem interested in helping us with a tasting. What we tasted was good but the ambience and service weren't. The service is your seated and brought a glass of water - you have to refill yourself the only table service is when you decide what you want to drink and go to the bar to order it yourself. They do bring it to you but it takes a minute. They have small sides of pretzel board with olives and a fruit. There are other choices the price ranges from $25 to a bowl of nuts for a few bucks. As many reviews before, have stated the ambience in this location is absolutely incredible. You truly feel like you've been taken back to the prohibition era and are in an upscale speakeasy. While we visited, I opted to do their gin flight which I love that they offer. That way you can try several of the different ones, and then, if you want a cocktail afterwards, you can enjoy. My husband opted for an old fashion, which was perfect for him, and again, just the ambience coupled with the vintageness of an old fashion, provided for a great experience. The gin flight was great, and I especially loved the barrel, rested and the chocolate orange. The Navy strength gin is very sharp on the pallet and has a little bite in the back. It was like stepping back in time coming into this shoppe. We had wanted to come here on our last visit but beer won out with the choice of those days. The brick building looks so turn of the century and the inside matched with the wood accents and glass cabinets. Tastings are in a tiny thimble but don't be put off on that because that is enough to know you are drinking some quality gin. There were about five types with various flavors and qualities and the woman who served those explained everything well, but I was dazed focusing on the gin. I decided on the Navy Strength which is a very high proof but after the initial sock in the face is oh so smooth. According to the pourer, the name came from the British Navy when the enlisted men enjoyed rum the officers wanted gin as it was more civilized. The officers were concerned about being sold watered down gin and setting fire to the gin was proof that it hadn't been watered down. That is where the term "proof" came from but to me it's just good. read more

The AMBIANCE is everything here. Be prepared to take a trip in a Time Machine. Upon entering the Chemist I was transported to a time well before I was born when apothecaries were common facilities to treat all of your ailments. Such time and effort was put into making the Chemist a wonderful flashback in history. My mocktail was wonderful too. This is more of an adult stop, but I consider it a must stop. Distillery with a bar attached. They make their own gin and whiskey in house, but they do have others. Didn't try the gin but the whiskey was not bad. Had the " Into the cauldron" very flavorful and enjoyed it. I am more of a straight whiskey drinker, but, when in Rome. The staff was friendly and the vibe was pretty cool. I've not seen a gin-only distillery before, let alone a mother and daughter distillery. To add to their unique character, they make 4 different gins! The shop had a wonderful old world feel and the woman leading the tasting was great. We had a great time and left with a couple of bottles. Absolutely a must-stop and do a gin tasting here when in AVL! The decor alone is worth a visit, but the story behind the gins and the tasting of their full line-up is where it's really at! The staff is so engaging, kind, informative, and knowledgeable! Loved perusing the space as it resembles an old-timey apothecary. They even sell proper gin-tasting glassware and other accoutrement. Highly recommend taking their gin sampler package for home before going to their bar Antidote, in the building right behind them. We did the tour with a group and had a great time. Thank you, Nicole! The tour itself is pretty brief, but we learned some things about distilling vodka, gin and whiskey -- and more importantly, we got to taste basically a little of everything they make there. You'll leave with a buzz at noon! I always thought gin was pretty much gin, but here that's not the case. The basic gin is excellent (their proprietary mix of botanicals, in addition to the baseline juniper berries make it unique), but then they also have several variations on the theme. The whiskeys are good as well. I especially liked the one that is made with offal from Green Man brewery just up the street. One brewery's waste is a distillery's treasure! The building is cool inside, as is the incredible bar next door. Bottom-line: Asheville isn't just about microbreweries folks! read more

Went for a friendly and informative tasting last fall with friends and everything about this place and its spirits is impressive. We left with several bottles ( which the helpful employee helped me sneak out as a present for my husband) and have spent the winter enjoying our home cocktails ever since! Looks like a cool place but as someone who commonly visits distilleries, this was very strange and off putting. This place is a MUST when in Asheville! This little Gin distillery has a lot of character and provides amazing Gin! They offer $1 G&T samples made with their Chemist Gin and Fentiman's Botanical Tonic Water, this pairing made out to be one the best G&T's I've had and so of course, I bought a bottle of each to be able to make some at home! We loved this place so much we visited it twice during our short stay in Asheville, we also grabbed drinks at their bar The Antidote next door which also offers a great array of G&T's and other cocktails. The service at both establishments was superb. However, I have to single out the Chemist for their service the two girls that tended to us on both occasions we visited were extremely sweet and went out of their way to make us feel welcome.. one of the times we visited it was very late and their back room was closed but they still opened it up for us to be able to take a couple pictures! The good service did not end there for me, I unfortunately left my wallet at the Antidote and didn't realize it until i was back home, I tried to contact the Antidote but was unsuccessful. My husband then gave me the idea of contacting the Chemist since the girls had been so nice! So i did, and a girl by the name of Rhea picked up the phone and well, long story short - She walked over to the Antidote, found my wallet, called me back for my address and mailed it back to me along with a warm note and some stickers ... free of charge! Also, worth mentioning is my wallet was at this establishment for about 2 weeks .. and not one charge was made to any of my cards not one ... nothing was taken everything was in its place and this speaks volumes of not only this establishment but its employees. I know this has been an usually long review, but I can't say enough good things and i'm not sure who manages their Yelp account and reads the reviews! but Rhea if you're reading this ...
