This is very emotional for me, as this experience was so much more than a day at the salon. I had never been to Connie before, but I had heard her name many times. I am the mother of 2 biracial girls (half white, half black). My daughters did not genetically get "white" people hair. Both of them got all African American hair. It is beautiful, but very difficult to maintain. We've spent countless hours in ethnic salons, as nobody can understand this hair, except African Americans, right? WRONG. For years on end the procedure for this hair was a chemical relaxer. Well, I don't care what anybody tells you, no lye, or light chemicals, or whatever they promote, these relaxers are extremely brutal on the hair. My girls would have chemical burns on the outside of their ears. Now, if it does that to the skin, what is it doing to the hair? Eventually after, like I said, years of this and years on my girls dreading this (understandably so), I had ENOUGH! There had to be a better way. My oldest girl was always so self conscious about her hair, it was truly sad to watch. Well she is in high school now & this is the time in a girls life where it really starts to matter the most. One day as I sat at home thinking of her with tears in her eyes that morning, my tummy was truly sick and my heart truly sad. As I sat there, Connie's name kept coming to my mind. Now remember, I've never met her before, never been to her salon. It was as if someone was pushing me. So, I picked up the phone. I got in contact with Connie, and she agreed to see us that same day after school, once I had her locked in to an appointment, I dropped the extra information on her about my daughter being biracial & about the grade & texture she had. I must say, without missing a beat and in the most confident voice ever spoken to me, Connie replied "bring her in, I accept any challenge." So, when I break the news to my daughter that a white stylist was going to do her hair & that Connie explained to me that there was in fact different options, my daughter was skeptical. Not only skeptical, but extremely self conscious. The fear of being turned away after we got there and things of that nature took over. I finally got her to trust me & to agree, and off to Connie's we go! Once we walked into the door the anxiety was gone. Connie was vivacious, talkative, positive, and extremely compassionate. She explained in great detail what was going on with my daughters and how she COULD help! I watched each step of her process, many times with tears in my eyes because after some of the steps I could see my beautiful daughter finally start to look at herself in the mirror (something she never did before), then I began to see a smile emerging. The end results of this appointment were insane! I can't describe in words how gorgeous her hair was. It took some time to complete all that Connie did, but Connie was invested and committed to showing us that she could help. I have pictures of my daughter's hair before and after. They will blow your mind. I recommend all biracial children that have that extremely difficult hair to go see Connie as soon as possible!!!! She will sit down with you and do a consultation, and explain everything everything as well as the reasons why. It may sound crazy to some, but Connie changed my daughter for the better. She holds her head up, she smiles, she's confident now. My mom even had tears in her eyes when she saw my daughter's hair. My daughter said the next day she went to school that everybody just had to have their hands in her hair! It was amazing, what was once an embarrassment was now the talk of the town! Wow what a great woman and stylist. I have thin hair and the last thing i wanted on my wedding day was to have my thinning hair showing in my wedding pictures. I was told by a friend on FB when i asked of someone who could do my hair to go to Connie. I went to see her for a visit and talked about what i was wanting. She said we could do clip in extension, make the appointment for a run through prior to my wedding and let her do her thing and amazing it turned out. She spun me around in the chair holding a mirror to see and tears starting flowing down my face. She was booked. She sent several texted and email and even made a phone call prior to my wedding to confirm the appointments that I booked for my brides maids and mother. She showed up early to the venue and set up and was ready for the first person right on time. So professional and organized. She had great prices and great care and the service that she provides is the best. Made me look and feel great on the best day of my life and for that I could never repay her. this salon is super cute on the inside. Connie is very professional and is exactly what you want to see in your stylist. She is dressed to the nine's with hair and makeup lookin good. she patiently listened to me talk about my previous bad experience with a stylist and assured me that i am her walking billboard so she wants me to be happy and honest about what makes me happy. she's a very positive multi talented person who also acts as the manager of southern roots. this was my first visit to the salon since i am new to waxahachie but i will be back because i felt very confident listening to her talk about how she takes classes to keep up on the latest techniques so her education is ongoing. and the proof that she walks the talk is in my hair cut which turned out exactly how i wanted it. so on top of my tip i wanted to put this out there for other people to give connie a try she really is worth it. she took alot of time and effort on me and that means alot. read more

I very *very* rarely go to salons and stylists - really have been only a handful of times. I tried a Groupon for Connie, though, and was very impressed and grateful. She gave me some fantastic tips on how to care for/style my hair, and was able to give me professional advice to steer away from styles that wouldn't look right based on the season and characteristics of my hair/routine. I've gotten more compliments on my hair since seeing her than at any other time in my life, and enjoyed my time spent chatting with her. I think we, as women, know how hard it is to find someone who listens to what you want and how hard it is to find a good hairstylist. There are not enough nice things that I can say about Connie. She did more than an awesome job of coloring and cutting my hair. My cut is so good that I can put my hot rollers in and when I take them out I just run my fingers through my hair and go. Connie has been my hair stylist for several years now. She started by coming to my house when she was part time. I'm very picky about my hair and she got it right from the very first!!! She then became my friend. I love this lady so much! She's excellent with hair, nails, makeup. She's vivacious and always has an upbeat attitude. When she moved to Waxahachie I was devastated. I just recently went and had my hair done at Salon 5-1-5-OH with Connie Slay and I am in love with it!! She not only did exactly what I asked but over achieved! She colored and cut it and I'm not easy to please when it comes to my hair. It was incredibly soft and healthy when I left and looked awesome!!!
