Course is well manicured. Greens aren't fast, but not slow. They were a little bumpy, probably need to be rolled. The setup is really odd. There are 10 ravines to get over off the tee boxes. Kind of goofy. 1-3 is fine, but 10 is odd. There were only a small few holes where the ball would actually go out true distance off the tee. Most shots were uphill. Not a great setup. If you're a novice golfer, prob shouldn't play. I got around easy enough. The fairways were will groomed and true to hit from. Greens were large, not tiny. Course was relatively easy if you course manage. I'd prob play 5-6 strokes better after playing it once but shot a decent 82 (tournament) for never having played it before. All in all I will probably play it again. Isn't on my never play again list, which there are a few. read more

The most atrocious management I have ever seen. On a very open day, not packed whatsoever we were met with a canceled teatime for showing up only 10 minutes late. We informed the clubhouse over 1 hour before and with spite and anger, They replied, "we are not going to give you guys your tee time if you do not show up exactly on time." Now this was a pretty open day and we were only late due to a last minute accident, how open was the course you may ask. Well they were letting walk in's book tee times on the spot. If this wasn't bad enough as soon as I mentioned my tee time i was met with hostility. I have never met someone so rude in all my days, I highly recommend NEVER going here. This is this on the worst experience I have ever had at a golf course. My party and I scheduled a tee time at 4:10. Due to unforeseen traffic circumstances we arrived at 4:20. We called ahead to make sure we were okay to play and a presumably Indian woman called us. We might not be able to play although I couldn't understand her accent very well. As we entered the clubhouse, I could hear the pro shop manager already angry with other customers. As we walked up. We checked in for our tee time and he told us that we could no longer get a refund and that we could not play the tee time due to the fact that he gave our tee time away to walk ins. We tried to figure out any way to play a little later or even start at the third tee but to no avail. One of the most rude people I've had to ever deal with and I will never return to this course. We drove an hour and 40 mins and now we cannot even play golf. Horrible experience. If you are in this area, I would never recommend playing this course. read more

SHADY!!! I have youth on course, a program that allows you to pay $5 for a tee time, which we called THIS MORNING and confirmed. First issue, we check in and it's "not showing up" the tee time we booked hours ago. I scheduled time off just for this tee time. Now ladies and gentleman, the real big Bertha! We got charged $40 for a twilight tee time! On one hand, it was not twilight hours, so good on you for giving me a discount.... ON A TEE TIME I ALREADY BOUGHT! They charged me for 2 tee times, when I asked, I thought they must have mistook my father for golfing too, but no, the guy said "well it's not twilight yet but we'll give you the twilight rate" uh dude I already paid my dues brotherino? What's the slander for bruv? When we get a similar tee time, (the one issue they resolved) I show them the card and they supposedly charge $5 and then $17 for a cart... while they added the $5 for the course and the $17 for the cart, they fail to mention it's $17 PER 9 HOLES. Would've been good to know! Additionally, we got charged TWICE for a $5 "GC improvement fee" additionally NOT MENTIONED. They also charged $5 for my dad who came.... You guessed it, NOT MENTIONED!!! What we should've paid? -$29 for the Cart, me, and range balls What we were charged? -$97! More than triple the price. I faintly heard the price that my absolute king of my father paid for, which I was confused, and asked for the receipt , which he seemed confused at me asking for, not to mention how rude and reluctant he was about it. After reading it I asked for a full refund just to be met with by snarky attitude, and a "so you're just not gonna play then?" Well dipsh!t I cleared my whole day for it and you ruined it. There are very few things I expect from a golf course in exchange for my payment. All 3 were epic fails here: 1) Porta-Potties to be serviced. I've seen bad; these win the disgusting prize. 2) Water in the water containers. Bone dry. 3) Trash cans emptied from the day before. Played here for many years. The track is unique, challenging and not for beginners or weekend warriors. Many shots go over ravines or have hazards that require accurate and somewhat longer tee shots that beginners are not used to on courses with wide open fairways. Hitting balls into ravines, into the woods, hazards and on other fairways just backs up the entire course. The design was made for "cart only". Can you walk? Sure, but you better be in very good shape and a good golfer or you will be dead by the 15th/16th hole and back up the whole course looking for lost balls. This is a design that has some long "green to next tee" walks and some major hills. The course should mandate that no money be taken from walkers unless they agree that they will be asked to pick up and move on if they have open holes in front of them or are backing up the course. Slow play can be notorious here. 4 stars given because the value for money is awesome. $40-$45 with a cart on weekdays is very good for a course of this quality. Tips for playing. Get an early tee time. Have patience as some rounds will be 4+ or even 5 hours if not monitored. Ask if there is a marshal and whether they will be monitoring slow play. Play the right tees for your game. read more

Absolutely love the course and their entire staff. When pulling out of the course the other day, I clipped a curb with the wife's car and damaged a tire and wheel. The guys let me leave the keys and the car with them overnight until AAA could pick it up the next morning. Brett was kind enough to give the driver the keys and they towed it back to Happy Valley so it could be fixed. Played like crap, but drank 3 Cherry Cokes (the cart girl said that was a record). I'm an out of towner looking for a place to play a round of golf. Realized this course was close to my hotel. Arrived and was greeted by an older gentleman and futher assisted by a younger gentleman. Very helpful and professional that carries a lot of weight with me. Course was challenging and at some holes gettable. Paired up with some youngsters and had a great time. I know I'm going against the grain rating Chehalem Glenn a sticker, but hear me out. First, I do want to say the course is maintained in excellent condition. Plus the staff is professional, the rates are relatively inexpensive, and the course isn't crowded, at least during the week. My only bitch about the staff is that pin placements on a Monday were often 6-10' from the edge of the green. That's just not right. My primary fault with the course is the design. I think the architect, Bill Robinson, was really pissed off when he designed this course. I say that because Robinson has a great record as a designer, but here he took some incredibly beautiful terrain and butchered it. My evidence is as follows: 1) Nearly every non-par 3 hole has a pair of bunkers lining the fairway in the landing zone. If not a pair of bunkers then a trap and a lake. This makes the landing zone about 25 years wide for both weekend golfers playing the whites or big hitters playing from the tips. A good designer creates a safe landing area so golfers have an option. But not Robinson, everyone is equally screwed. 2) The greens are unfair. They don't roll true. They can't be read. And, worse of all, some slopes are so steep that when you putt up to a cup, the ball will stop and roll back down past your feet. That's just BS. 3) While many tees are above the fairways, the landing areas are typically uphill, which means you get little roll. Combine this with the fact that in late August the fairways were as soft April after a rainy Portland winter and your drives only go as far as they can fly in the air. Hell, I even plugged two good drives yesterday, in late freakin' August after more than a month without rain. 4) Having to use a mid-range iron on a non-par three is the surest sign of a poor design. Yet, on 3 or 4 holes at Chehalem you are well advised to use an iron so you don't go too far and end up in a ravine. The bottom line is I played Chehalem about 10 years ago and I hated it and vowed never to return. But after a decade I figured it was time to let bygones by bygones and try it again. I was right the first time. Bill Robinson, the architect totally butchered this layout to the extent that a number of the holes had to be redesigned and rebuilt to make them playable. That is never a good sign on a relatively young course. If you want to play a well-designed and challenging course go to OGA or Stone Creek or Redtail or the Reserve or Langdon. If you want to punish yourself on a course where it is not your fault, try Chehalem Glenn. read more

Very cool and very tough. Play Monday through Thursday before March 1st and it is play all day long. After 27 holes fearing a much aggrieved wife, my buddy and I finally hung it up. The whites play 6159 with a slope rating of 146. Believe me do not let the yardage fool you; pay attention to that slope rating. The front nine is challenging but the back nine is a killer. The number two stroke hole (#12) requires a placed tee of shot of around 225. Longer and you are in a gully, shorter and you have a huge carry over the gully. If you make it over the gully, you have a very long up hill shot to the green. This hole is a beast and it is not the only one like it. Nine, ten and eleven are no picnic. Greens are lightening fast. Rough is thick but not unfair. Very nice practice area. At $39.00 bucks with cart this is one great deal. This is must play for the good golfer and one to avoid like the plague for a beginner. read more

I found this course on golfnow.com. Played here yesterday and what a nice place. The greens were well maintained, the fairways were lush. I was able to take nice big divots and get the ball to bite on the green. Every green had some contour. There are a few interesting holes with carry over brush, water, etc. I really liked the course and would play here again. The "clubhouse" is nothing to write home about. Very small and not too much to offer. The drink cart gal was good. I was able to run a tab on a CC and close out after the round in the clubhouse. This was a challenging course but playable. read more

This has been my home course for the past 10.5 years, and I love it! Extremely challenging for players of all levels. I was also in the kids summer programs for 2 years, and that was awesome. They're really good at teaching kids how to play well, as well as teaching them the rules and etiquette. Also a great value. There aren't many places that have green fees this low. Though the clubhouse does leave players wanting- not much food choices, but excellent beer selection. Pro shop isn't huge, but has all of the essentials. Overall, I'd give this course a solid 9.5/10. I'm moving soon, so I think I have to get in a few more rounds before I go! read more

Hello All, Chehalem Glenn Golf Course is a great adventure that represents the Pacific Northwest! They have a great staff that is very understanding and helpful. The course has great greens and is well maintained all year. I have photos and videos to help explain how beautiful this course is. Along with the staff and course they have great practice facilities! As always I will make the review in parts. This review will have four parts staff, practice facilities, course and a pros and cons quick summary. Feel free to scroll to the bottom if you want the quick version! STAFF- The staff at Chehalem are great! There have been multiple situations that have left me impressed with the staff. I typically play as the first tee time of the day. There are two older gentlemen (a marshal and a pro shop worker) who usually play right when I do or just before. They always ask if I would like to join or just play through them. They Are lighting fast but I am usually in a hurry to get to work so I play through. They always complement my swing and my shot. Another time I was impressed was just last Thursday when we had booked four of their awesome golf boards! They had an electrical issue the night before and the golf boards didn't have a full charge. A golf board is $25 and a regular cart is $15. They charge us $25 for the golf board and sent us out on the front and we had a blast. Then then switched us into regular carts at the turn because they didn't want the golf boards to die on us. Not only did they make the switch for free but they also gave us $10 back on our cards. Not Store credit but our actual money back. I am very thankful for that! 5/5 PRACTICE AREA- The Driving range has many targets, brand new range balls, mats and grass to hit off of. The range is closed Monday morning for mowing and ball collection. Other than that it is a great place to go and practice long shots or short shots. They also have a large green right next to the pro shop for putting. This practice green has many breaks and is very accurate as far as speed of greens go. There is a large chipping and putting green over next to the range. You can practice around the green chips and really long putts. Finally, they have a hidden gem that most people don't actually know about. Their short game practice area. This is where you can practice both pitches and chips. It is kept in amazing shape for an all grass area. Ask for directions to this for it is a little harder to find. 4/5 COURSE- Now to the part we have all been waiting for. Chehalem has a great course the fairways are flush green and are always well mowed. They drain rather well during the winter also due to the elevation and how they were built. Elevation is another reason why this course is so unique. You are often hitting uphill or downhill teeing from higher up or lower up. The greens are of pretty good size and can have two or three different tiers on many greens. Some have wicked brakes and generally play rather fast! Spend some time putting before the round. Most people are in agreement that the back nine is harder than the front. Mostly due to holes 10-14. If you get through those alive you are in great shape for the rest of the back! Watch out for holes 4-6 on the front they can add strokes quickly if you are not careful. The Rate to play at Chehalem whether it is morning or weekend is well worth the pricing. My husband is a seasoned golfer and I am a novice, but I fully understand golf etiquette and have played on private and public courses in the past. We rented golf carts with 2 friends yesterday at Chehalem Glenn. The course was backed up and we started 3 minutes past our tee time. No one was goofing around as we are all a naturally competetive group. We had each teed off the first hole, when a Marshall came running over telling us in a rude tone to pick up the pace. I did not get his name but he was older, longer, stringy gray hair with a thick mustache, and rounded abdomen. I didn't think much as we had only been on the fairway for a few minutes. I continued on and was about to take my second stroke, when on my back swing the marshall screamed at me "Hey! You can't be practicing down here (sarcastically)". I was confused and yelled back up the hill back "we aren't practicing we are just newer golfers." He then yelled again "you need to move along". We just picked up our balls and planned to skip the first hole of 9 that we purchased to move on and enjoy golf. We figured once we got going it would be easier. My husband told us to go ahead to the next hole while he ran back up to our vehicle to tape his wrists. He planed to meet up wherever we were to avoid slowing the game down. The same marshall stopped him and would not allow him to go back to his own vehicle to tape his wrists and told my husband not to bring novice golfers on a Saturday or Sunday again. I decided to attempt to speak with a manager about this while the rest of our group continued golfing. There were no golfers waiting on us, we were playing with appropriate pace. In the club house I asked to speak with a manager, when a gentleman named AC told me that I could only speak with him. I proceeded to tell him how the marshall had behaved. His response was "Well you know what, we pride ourselves on 2 things here and thats our greens and our pace of play". I had explained to him that we had only been on the first hole for 4 minutes before being yelled at. He then stated that they were just flustered because the group ahead of us was off pace, and he comped our golf cart. At that point we met back up with our friends who were swinging and running to each ball to hit the next swing. We were still on pace from our tee time, no other golfers were behind us pushing us to play faster. On hole 3 we had each teed off again, when 2 Marshalls rode their cart directly over to us and again told us that we needed to play faster and if we weren't on the green in 3 swings, to pick up our balls and move along. AGAIN we were not being yelled at after we swung multiple times, they were not even allowing us to swing twice before scolding us to move along, not allowing us to even play an entire hole. I explained to the marshall that the score card recommended times per hole were 12-20 minutes and we were more than on pace. No one was behind us. His response was "Well the card states that, but it's a worse case scenario and we need you to be playing 8 to 10 minutes per hole." My husband is a well seasoned golfer, and believes this is a difficult time standard for this course. Even for those who golf regularly. We had already skipped a 1.5 holes out of the 9 we purchased and we weren't going to continue to skip more. Our group was so frustrated that we decided to call it quits. On the way back, passing the club house, my friend overheard the first 2 Marshalls that gave us a hard time discussing which groups they wanted to get off the course next. When turning in our golf carts, my husband and friend went back into the club house to talk with AC to attempt reconciliation. We are all owners of 4 seperate businesses in town. We are all extremely involved in the community, and truly wanted a peaceful resolve. We all love Newberg and this is not something that we would expect from a public facility that we support through our taxes. They asked AC for a refund, which he agreed to. My husband shared with AC that due to this experience he was concerned this would sour golf for us. Our friend kindly asked AC what we could do to be allowed to play on this course in the future as we were moving very fast and skipped a hole to keep the Marshalls content. Then AC responded with "you just need to play faster (in a rude tone)". Then our friend kindly asked, "Is this a public golf course?" AC confirmed. Then our friend responded with "We are all a part of this community and would love to be able to use it. So what can our group do to improve our golfing as we are newer golfers?" To which AC responded with "Well this is the 7th hardest golf course in Oregon and you just need to learn to play faster." read more

Got rained out and rain-checks are good for only 3 weeks. When we got the raincheck, guy at the register told us to talk to Brandon and is usually good about extending it. Called the other day and talked to someone else who said they are willing to extend it, no need to talk to Brandon. Called anyways and asked Brandon to make sure. Brandon was not very friendly or willing to even extend the rain check a few days. Told him i would not be back to the course and he said "okay." I agree with Michael, a must play for good golfers. It is NOT a course for players who are just beginning, or else you will get frustrated, lose 20-30 balls and probably give up the game. It is a challenging course with a lot of ravines, and out of bounds areas. But if you're a good golfer, then it is a fun course. It's a high-quality course with a pretty good price. Chehalem Glenn Golf Course is a great public course. The front 9 is a pretty standard layout, but the newer back 9 offers a real challenge, with lots of blind shots and long carries. Rates are reasonable ($39 weekend / $35 weekday during the season) and they offer twilight rates and a hot dog special. I've only played the course once so far but will definitely be going back next Spring. read more

The first time I played Chehalem Glenn I swore I would never be back. It has since become one of my "regular" venues. I kind of see this golf course as an "acquired taste". There are some unconventional holes that I have learned to like over the years. The layout is interesting and somewhat difficult, which appeals to me. The greens are large and undulating and can be fast at certain times of the year. One gripe: I have noticed over the last couple of years that they have softened the greens considerably; this will probably appeal to most golfers, but I dislike it. When these greens are hard and fast, they are amongst the most challenging I have played in the Pacific Northwest and I think this is as it should be. Anyway, off my soapbox. The staff is very welcoming and helpful and they have great practice facilities. Maybe not the best course for a beginner, but for the golfer looking for a challenge, this course is no pushover and provides a wide variety of terrain and hole layouts. read more

A challenging yet beautiful course with a brutal back nine that would terrorize any novice

I recently played this course three consecutive days this winter and plan to make this my home course. I live almost an hour away from this gem but it is definetly worth the drive. The course even after substantial rain was nearly completely dry, with some exceptions in the rough. The greens ran fast and true. Despite still being an extremely difficult course, they have certainly made it more friendly for beginners and youth. Strongly recommend this course if you are anywhere in the Portland area. read more

I just love tis course! It offers a wonderful taste of Oregon's beautiful countryside on the cusp of wine country while also delivering a challenge set of holes. It does not have the amenities of a huge Club House and restaurant - but I think this adds to its small town charm. It is not ostentatious - just a great, solid game of golf. Played this course a couple times.. Very good and pretty dang tough! I actually went there at the best time during the summer when the weather was just right for a round of golfing. The staff is very nice, and greet you with a smile the moment you walk and at times the right guys working will actually tell you its a tough course. But either way, its fun if you play for a couple times on that course and take a buddy there and make a friendly wage :P. At least you will know the course a little better then them! This Public Golf Course plays and looks like a nice Private Country Club. It is challenging for the low handicap golfer. Yet tees have been provided for the high handicap player. If you can not drive 150 yards there are drop zones to allow play for even the weakest drives. This course is site of both Senior Golf and Junior Golf events. . Practice areas are provided at no cost. The best part is that the course is open and playable even when it is raining because the fairways are sand based with drains.This is a hilly course and electric carts are recommended. I just love playing here and consider this one of the nicest golf courses in the Portland area. read more

The overall course play has seriously declined over the last 5 years. This once was one of the best courses in town. The greens are my single biggest complaint. They roll so untrue it can and has ruined many rounds for me. Which is very disappointing as they used to be extremely good. I find it difficult to want to go all the way out to Newberg to play here. Especially since the reward program was also done away with. So if you want to play a course with worse greens than your backyard I recommend Chehalem Glen. read more
